Default Phase one and exercise...?

Hey Chickies,
I was posting in my journal about my lack of motivation to get to the gym. I had someone reply with 'you know south beach discourages you from working out at all during phase 1." At which point I just thought that was absurd. Ofcourse I am not a guru on SB at all so I thought I would pose the question to you all. Are you supposed to work out during Phase 1? I procrastinate yes, but I am used to working out like 4 to 5 times a week so I think I can handle it. What do you all think?

Many people feel tired and lack energy in phase 1 - especially if they aren't drinking milk or eating enough legumes. Usually phase 1 is not a time for them to start exercising if they haven't been already. By the second week of phase 1, they may have more energy. I say to exercise if you are able to in phase 1 (but you may have to cut back the intensity). When you get to phase 2, you should have the energy to intensify the exercise.

I started exercise when I got to phase 2 the first time but I hadn't been exercising before. This time I was able to keep exercising in phase 1 at the same level I had been doing before.

Stephie, for those who haven't exercised before, P1 is not the time to start. But if you are used to working out regularly, just be gentle with yourself in P1.

So...if you are really having trouble finding the energy to work out right now, take it easy, okay? It can be hard, especially the first couple days, to have the energy to follow your usual routine. Lift a little less weight, do your cardio at a lower intensity, etc. It's only 2 weeks...you won't sink into flab, I promise. Only you know what your body can handle, but just listen to it more intently these two weeks, so you aren't pushing yourself too hard, okay?

Like Barb said (she is so good!!! ), if you eat the allowed good carbs (milk, yogurt, bell peppers, tomatoes, beans and legumes), you'll have more energy for your workouts.

I was used to exercising 4-5 times a week before I started SB, but when I got to Phase 1, boy was I tired!!! So, I cut it back, especially that first week. Between Days 3-6 I hardly did anything at all. When I got my energy back in week 2, I started bringing it back (but didn't get back up to my usual intensity until P2). I say listen to your body and do what feels right. Don't push yourself too hard right now. Good luck!

I have been exercising also prior to the sb diet. I am on day 5 and I have worked out 2 times for 2 hours. I feel fine. I think if you are willing and want to go for it. I did not read that part in the book,WHOOPS.. anyway Good luck.
