Default Need healthy travel snacks ...

Does anyone have any good tips for snacks while traveling? I was thinking about nuts, but once I start, I know I will eat the whole can/bag/container. I can bring a little cooler with me in the car, so I can keep stuff cold. But I'm concerned about eating meals. I have about an 8 hour road trip and I don't want to resort to fast food.

Any ideas would be great!

akihega,

Try bringing sliced lunch meat and sliced cheese, you can roll those up together and snack on them, also bring veggies to munch on, or make some deviled eggs, or boiled eggs. Also if you on phase 2 check your local market for South Beach Diet snacks, they have crackers and cookies that are SB friendly that you can have up to 2 a day. Hope this helps.

Can you make your own bags of nuts with smaller portions? They make "snack" sized ziplock-type bags (about 1/2 the size of a sandwich bag) that might help you control portions.

Also, I carry string cheese in my purse. I know that sounds kind of gross, but as long as I'm in air conditioning it's fine for 3-4 hours.

Have you ever made the spicy roasted garbanzo beans? (I think it's in phase 1 recipes). I like those as a snack, although with the heat right now I haven't made them for a while.

I'm interested in seeing what ideas the other ladies have!

What a great topic! Planters makes packages of nuts called "Go-Nuts" that are exactly 1 oz. portions- there is a mixed nuts and an almond variety. I prefer soy nuts, so the first thing I do is divide the container up into exact single serving bags, because I've certainly started a binge facing an entire container (nuts, ice cream, bag of chips, etc.) and the portion control really helps me. There are also mini bags of sugar snap peas and carrots (I don't know what phase you're on) available at the store, which make great snacks. Hardboiled eggs would also be an option. You can always get a salad from a fast-food chain, as well, if you do your research ahead of time on the company's web site. Of course, tupperware is wonderful for a cooler! Prepare a salad with tuna, or make the meat and cheese roll-ups mentioned above. With cheese, veggies, and nuts, plus LOTS of bottled water, you should be good to go!
