Starting the SB Diet Question

Hi, I'm new and very excited to find this site! You all seem like a wonderful bunch of people. I have hypo thyroid issues so losing weight, and keeping it off is going to be a life long issue. (I'm starting to see) The SB thing has peaked my intrest because of the combo of low fat (wich is important to me) and balancing the carbs (which I LOVE my breads and pastas) Were is the best place for me to get the diet info? Should I join online, buy the book, or is there a posting here somewhere that outlines the diet? I have had this thyroid problem for about 8 yrs. and the only time I lost any weight was with diet pills, and I'm not doing that again. I didn't keep it off (which is obvious) I would apperciate any direction you can give, pay day is Friday and I want to start asap. Postings, PM's, or emails would be greatly apperciated.

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE
Oh and I'm a lousy speller so please ignore!!

Welcome to the Beach Lori!

I just started SBD on Jan. 1 and have used a combination of the book and this site. The updated food lists in the FAQ section are very helpful. I also love the recipies! I have looked at signing up for the SBD website, but I really don't want to pay for it, so am sticking with what I am doing. You can sign up for a free daily email from SBD online though. That is what I do. I do suggest that you read the book because it gives you the background and reasoning behind this way of eating.

Best of luck!
:)

Lori, welcome to the Beach! We're very glad to have you join us!
I've removed your email from your message... it would very quickly be picked up by spammers, and/or unethical lurkers. PMing is best around here, and certainly you can share your address with anyone via PM. :)

It's definitely an asset having the book, but you could take a good look at the FAQ, recipe sections, etc before making a decision.

Welcome to the Beach! The book is great to have to learn the basics. However, there have been changes to the diet since the book was printed (things like a medium banana is now allowed in Phase 2) so the updated food lists that are in the FAQ section are very important. You can also go to the paid site and sign up for the Daily Dish without actually paying anything. I have the cookbook and use it a lot and love it. There is also a paperback Good Fats/Good Carbs guide which is a good reference book but not essential.

Welcome to the beach!!!

DON'T join the online website - it's overpriced (60 bucks a quarter!), not a lot of content and you get much better advice and chat from this site. DO sign up for the Daily Dish from the official webiste - you'll get up to date information on changes to the diet (that often get posted on this site).

I'd buy the main SBD book and the follow up cook book:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...books&n=507846

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...books&n=507846

The 'Good Carb Cookbook' is good, but limited recipes in my opinion (but, a good compliment to SBD cookbook):

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...books&n=507846

I think the 'Essential Eating Well' cookbook is excellent and I'd highly recommend it:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...books&n=507846

And, 'A New Way to Cook' is excellent - it's chock full of recipes, tips and techniques for lowfat good GI cooking. It's easy to modify her recipes for strict SBD:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...975134-0729649

As I'm sure other folks have mentioned:

The GI database:
http://www.glycemicindex.com/

All recipes - search for 'South Beach Diet' on this site:
http://allrecipes.com/

another SBD forum (but I hardly go there anymore - this one is far better):
http://www.***************************/forum/index.php

Wendi's SBD recipes:
http://www.geocities.com/wendifromte...se1recipes.htm

Another recipe collection:
http://www.***************************/...ollection.html

A great source for S/F condiments and the like:

http://www.alacarb.com/

This site is by far the best, IMO - everyone is really nice, super helpful and incredibly supportive - you've come to the right place!

Good Luck!!!!
