Nervous about using Splenda??

I was poking around in the recipes and saw the Mock French Toast. It looks like it has yummy potential but I am weary about using Splenda.

I don't know, goodness I have not been the healthiest eater in my life. But the idea of adding fake sugar on purpose to a meal scares me. Since starting SBD I buy next to no processed foods. Sure, I buy cans of tomatos but for the most part I shop on the outer rim of the grocery store. I have an organic garden. My twins drink organic milk.

Should I be this nervous or just use the Splenda? Think I could make the Mock French Toast without it?

Jen, I would definitely make it without the Splenda.

Splenda is made from sugar and is supposed to be safe. My only quibble with it is that it keeps your body in sugar mode and it's too easy to eat some real sugar. It also has 2 calories per teaspoon and should be counted in your 75 calories a day of extras.

Splenda has calories?? No wonder I like it better than Equal! ;)

Wait a minute here, my box says 0 calories on the nutrional label and right on the front of the box it says "No Calorie Sweetener". Is my box lying to me?

Maybe. Funny but my box says 2 calories per teaspoon?

Hey...just checked the website and there are two kinds of Splenda - Low Calorie and No Calorie. I guess I have the low calorie one! Live and learn!

Does spenda have the same side effect as sugar alcohol?
I have not tried it because of that.

Ruthxxx 07-05-2004 12:10 PM

Nope! It is sucralose, not an alcohol. The "Ose" family is nicer than the "Ol" family!

Jen, personally I feel safer using Splenda than Equal or sweet-n-low. Splends just feels more natural, doesn't give me a headache, etc. If you are really worried, try using Stevia. Though it is not accepted as a sweetener here, it has been used for hundreds of years across the world, and is made from an herb. My doctor has heard nothing against it, though there have been no official trials in the US, which is suspicious. You can get it at a health food store.

Your call...I drink organic milk too. We have to feel safe about the food we eat. Do what you need to do, okay? :goodvibes:
