Hi everyone,
I am new here and started SBD on 1/12/03. I have lost 6 lbs. and am really excited. I just wondered if anyone here was familiar with these two foods. I found the carbsmart ice cream from Breyer's that is made with Splenda and love it. Is it legal? I have bought the Butterball turkey smoked sausage and thought it would be safe but now I'm having second thoughts. What do you think about these two foods?

You are rright to have second thoughts. For Phase I, it's best not to experiment with foods NOT on the list. Have you checked the FAQ section in this Forum?

Turkey IS allowed but white meat only. Also sausage frequently has fillers in it such as wheat or milk products or even sugar.

As to Breyer's Ice Cream, better check the ingredients and nutritional labelling. I bet it has hidden carbs - the -ols and -oses but it may be OK.

Once again, it's best to keep it simple during Phase I. You wouldn't want to jeopardize that great initial weightloss.

I also bought the Butterball turkey sausage thinking I was being good, but when I got home I really studied the label. It's a no-no. OK, I've finished it off, but I won't be buying anymore.

Best advice everyone here will give you is, carefully check the labels. Look for added sugar.

I eat the carb smart ice cream. It's better than nothing but definitly a phase 2 food. I also eat it in moderation every now and then, it's not an every day thing.

Does the Carb Smart ice cream have sugar alcohols? Something you might like to try is Le Carb Frozen Yogurt. I like it, and it is only sweetened with Splenda. No sugar alcohols.

Don't forget, only 75 calories a day from sweet sources!

Hi there Carolinachik! I'm a newbie, and although I live in NYC now, I lived in NC for 20 years. So, you and I can discuss all our Southern food cravings! 'Cause what I wouldn't give for a biscuit, a glass of sweet tea, and big slice of pie to finish it off- perhaps buttermilk pie, or key lime, or pecan, or...

Oh dear, that was very cruel of me to say all those words. WELCOME to the Beach.

I also wanted to second Jennifer's rec on the Le Carb frozen dessert. I got it in Lemon, and was loving it before dieting. It is really light and tart, just like PIE filling! LOL I haven't eatten any in Phase 1, though.

And on reading those labels, I now spend so much time in the store reading, all the stock boys know me and are very helpful when I can't find what I'm looking for! More added benefits of the diet.

Carolina & LRL I'm from Georgia and right about now would KILL for some biscuits & pecan pie! Not to mention some corn dodgers & grits! OOps better go get a healthy snack before the wagon runs me down.

Hmmmm, cheese grits, topped with shrimp and bacon.

But seriously, does anyone have a recipe for Buttermilk Pie? No, not you SFlake!! But I figure it should be somewhat adaptable, right? Maybe something I could make in little cups for treats?

I used to work at Crook's Corner (we liked to think of ourselves as one of the more famous homes of Fine Southern Dining) and these were some of my faves- Shrimp and Grits, CatFish Almondine, Honeysuckle Sorbet, and Buttermilk Pie. I don't thing the Grits can be saved, and the sorbet is outta my league (going out at night to collect the honeysuckle blossoms- i don't think so!), but I bet the catfish and the pie could be done.

Anybody have thoughts?

And SFlake, here's a "recipe" that you and I can handle, and it sorta helped with my pecan pie craving- put a few whole pecans in a little cup, sprinkle with cinn and splenda- nuke for a minute or so. YUM.

OMG!!!! Buttermilk Pie is my dh's favorite dish. His grandmother used to cook it for him so I got the receipe after she passed away. I have it written down at home. I know the ingredients but not the measurements. It is made with:
Sugar
Eggs
Butter
Buttermilk
Bisquick mix
That's for the filling. I cooked mine in those frozen pie shells which I'm sure are off limits now. I really don't know how you could make it on the diet. I will get the measurments for you tomorrow if you want. Please share if you can adapt it.
Southern cooking is really hard to give up. I especially have a hard time eating eggs every morning....I'm a diehard grits person.

Carolina, thank you for the ingredients list!! I think you are correct, unadaptable for Phase 1, but I'll see what I can do in Phase 2. I am absolutely no chef , but I do love my desserts, and learning to cook won't be the worst thing that ever happened to me. Besides, after I take the Bar next month, I'll have some time on my hands to experiment! [I need a mad scientist smilie here!]

Bamiegurl, glad you found us over here. On the snacks- honestly, I think you'll be happier if you eat them, even if you don't think you need them. What I found was that, at first, I was eating A LOT at b-fast and lunch. But if I ate my snack, I was eating considerably less- so that the net total of my new smaller bfast and snack was less than just a BIG Ol' breakfast. My energy level and mood has also seemed more steady. But those are just the thoughts of another newbie.

Bamie, I also believe in the snacks. It keeps your blood sugar level or something to that effect. I notice if I don't eat them I get very peckish then tend to overeat. So have something even if it's a cheese stick or a handful or nuts.

BTW thanks lucky I will try the pecan thingy tonight. Your recipe seems up to par with my skill level
