Default Boot Camp Challenge 10/29/03-Overcoming Inertia

Okay troops, a short challenge today!

How do we overcome inertia? You know, the "stuckness" that gets in the way of moving forward? The "sameness" of doing the same thing over and over even when it isn't working?

I honestly don't have any quick answers for you today. I could say "just do it" but that is an over simplistic answer to a complicated question. Human beings are too complex to apply a "one size fits all" approach to overcoming inertia...or making any kind of changes for that matter.

So, you know you should exercise. In general, or more specifically, maybe right this minute! So how do you go from just sitting and thinking about it to actually doing it?

Here are my suggestions:

Let's Make a Deal! Don't be above a bit of bribery! Try rewarding yourself with a NON FOOD treat such as a bit of time to read a favorite book or a nice hot soak but only if you get your exercise done!

Make it a Date! Write it in your daytimer or planner or on your calendar just like any other appointment.

Do it FIRST! Get it out of the way first thing in your day...the longer you avoid it the harder it is!

Start with a Baby Step. For me, once I get my workout gear on I am halfway home! I guess it feels like some kind of mental committment!

Okay, now I am going to go and follow my own advice, stop putting if off and just go put on my workout clothes and see if that does the trick!

What works for you? Share time!

Have a great day!

Be back later, Franny. Just did a one hour workout at the gym, and I'm going to have a wee nap.

I get non-motivated without sunshine, so I turn on the lights in the morning and this helps. If I can do my exercising as one of the first things that I do in the day, then it tends to get done. But if I wait and say "I'll do it later...", well, you know how that goes...

Count me down for 30 min cardio and 25 min free weights for a total of 55 min. Does 30 min of raking leaves count for anything??

I'm with you, Sil. If I don't get my exercising done first thing in the morning, I just sit around feeling mildling guilty and thinking, "I'll do it later". Which I never do!

I'm so fed up with this rain... I wish we could just send it down to California and be done with it. It's not doing us any good up here.

When I pay for my Curves weekly, that motivates me to not waste my money. As far as walking is concerned, my DH motivates me to go walking with him.

Thirty minutes at Curves today. lizzie
