BMI~Body Mass Index

How To Calculate Your BMI

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is believed to be a good approximation of healthy weight,
as your BMI is proportional to your weight, divided by the square of your height.

Here is how you can find out what your BMI is:

Multiply your weight, in pounds, by 0.45 (example: 130 pounds x 0.45 = 58.5).

Multiply your height, in inches, by 0.025 (example: 5¹6" or 66" x 0.25 = 1.65).

Multiply the answer from step 2 by itself (example: 1.65 x 1.65 = 2.7225).

Divide the answer from step 1 by the answer from step 3 (example: 58.5 ÷ 2.7225 = 21.48).

If your body mass index rates below 21, you are underweight.

If your body mass index rates above 27, you are overweight.

A BMI of more than 40 indicates that you are obese.

A friend sent this to me.

BMI isn't accurate

although the bmi is the standard used calculating method its not accurate. body fat % is a far more accurate way to determine you health. the BMI uses only your height and weight. it doesn't take into accound your build or muscle mass. my BMI is 31. which makes me overweight. infact on the bmi chart i used it said i was obese. but my body fat is 19% and a healthy amount for an adult male is 12-18% so i'm just a fraction of healthy. try and find an online calculator and have a go just outta curiosity to see what a difference it makes

Good point ... BMI is good if you are not too muscular but if you exercise often your muscle mass is heavier ...

My BMI is probably high (haven't done Ladie's calculations yet) but I have a Tanita Body Fat Scale with athletic mode and my body fat is 20% ...

Sflake ... poke 'em twice !!!

Here's a link to getting your body fat %. You will need a caliper to do this and please note that a persons techique can make a difference. I have seen people grab and measure muscle instead of just the skin/fat area. There's also lots of other info at this site.

Be sure to scrool all the way down to the bottom of the page, where you will find several selectiions.

I would bust somebody's lip if they came near me with a caliper. I don't even want to know.....

For MOST people BMI is accurate, however, very athletic, muscular or tall people often do not fit in to it. Also they have a range for different body frames if you are larger you are at the top, smaller, at the bottom
