Default Early Weekend Beach Chat 8/9 & 8/10

Well maybe somewhere in SB land it is Saturday already

Been very preoccupied this week, but finally managed to catch up on everyone's posts. Congratulations Debbie!!! Happy Birthday Sophie!!!

Tuesday morning I received a call from one of the communications sergeants asking if I was home and if I spoke to John (I've mentioned him before, we worked together and cycle together). There was an accident involving his dad and work didn't know much more. I spoke with Megan, his wife, who told me his dad died in a freak accident while working on his car. John's sister, Pam is an officer in my squad. Their dad was 66 and in phenomenal shape (ride with him on my first big ride)

This week has been seen listening to their pain and trying to find comforting words. John is really worried about Pam. Sadly she found her dad moments after it happened and now blames herself.

As if that wasn't enough, one of my academy classmates had an accidental discharge which resulted in a minor injury to him, but his 3 year old son was also hit with the bullet. Fortunately the baby will be OK (nicked the liver and logged in his arm). The media and public have been crucifixing him. What the news doesn't know is just prior to the shooting, his son fell into his sister in law's pool and was drowning. He jumped in and saved his own child. He went home to change the baby and himself into dry clothes. I don't know all the details, but he was drying off and somehow the gun went off.

it has been an emotionally draining week thus far. Tomorrow is the first viewing. Their dad is former army and retired police officer. Calverton National Cemetary does not do burials on Saturday. Catholic Church doesn't do funeral masses in Sunday. That is why they delayed the services.

I have been working since Wednesday, with late jobs. I cannot wait to be off Monday. Sadly I have to miss the funeral as I finally have the appointment with the breast specialist.

Pam had requested her dad's shield number when she was in the academy. The sergeant in charge back then did nothing with the request (she made mention of this last week ) Well, I thought it would really mean a lot to her if I could make this happen. I made a few phone calls and submitted a formal request. The chief promised to take care of it. I told John, just to make sure I wasn't over stepping my bounds. He was so touched by my simple gesture and told me it would mean the world to Pam.

Lots of tears this week, but joy too. A life was spared and a new bundle of joy was welcomed into Debbie's family.

Sorry for the length and early post. Thanks for listening.

Oh and on a strange note....my left eye blood vessels broke. Half my eye is red. I remember something happening at word today, but don't ask me what because I don't remember lol. Also I burned two holes in my uniform shirt while lighting road flares. Think I need a day off???? Ahhh at least I can laugh at myself

Jekel, I guess it's good you can laugh at yourself because your days sure had very little to laugh about. Condolences to the family, indeed to your whole force - even your hard-hearted sergeant.

Early road trip on the plan today to pick up Mill bread. Call me nuts but driving through the fresh countryside is such a good way to start a day. The sun comes up just after 6 these days, there is mist and it's just all very peaceful.

Not sure what the day will bring. The Board member who is supposed to be on duty is out of town so I will probably be down there a lot. It's "grind" day and we are always quite busy with people coming in to watch - and buy bread and flour.

We also have opened one of our extra buildings where Matt and another student are doing blacksmith things. Matt continues to surprise me - he is an apprentice blacksmith and is also studying Greek in preparation for his fall university course.

Only three more weekends until we close the Mill up except for bus tours and weddings. It'll be nice to not have to supervise there during the week. All the staff will be gone to university so some of the Directors are going to need to learn to bag flour since the bus tours all want milling demonstrations.

Enjoy this lovely weekend - we have sun and mid-80s through to Wednesday when rain returns through the weekend. At least I've only had to water the garden once!

Whoops! Just got a call from our bread baker. She has to take her DH to the ER last night with shortness of breath. He's OK and home now but she won't have the bread ready until 9:30. which is when I unload it at the Mill. Guess I'll put a sign on the Mill door and they'll have to wait.

Good morning!

Jennifer, I'm sorry you've had such a sad and tragic week, and I hope your request for getting your friend's dad's badge number goes through. That's such a thoughtful thing you are doing for her.

Congratulations to Debbie and a belated Happy Birthday to Sophie!

I'm back home and trying to get back on routine after a very decadent week's vacation, but it was much needed and so much fun. At least I got plenty of exercise, since we did a lot of walking every day, and I do want to keep that up.

Jennifer, good morning and sorry to hear about your week. Hang in there.

Ruth, don't you just hate it when your plan gets disrupted?? I hope the rest of your day goes smoothly.

Happy Birthday to Sophie!

Glad you had a good trip, Cottage.

It looks to be another sunny day today-- hooray!!! I must be sure to get out and enjoy it. Nothing specific on my agenda though.

I need to search out more coffee and some breakfast. Have a great day, chicks!

Good morning.

Jennifer - So sad.

I'm working today. Tomorrow we are getting together with my brother and his family to hear about their summer vacation before my nephew start school next week. Yes, the start early here!

DH and I decided to take a risk on an interesting B&B we found in Ecuador only to find them fully booked for the dates we needed. Darn. Will work on our number two option today, which is a traditional hotel.

Enjoy your weekend.

Good afternoon,

Jekel what an emotionally sad week for you that was a nice thing to do for the sister, I hope it goes through.

I need to run to the grocery store and still need to clean house. My basement is also wet since we have had none stop rain since Thursday got both dehumidifiers running.

Enjoy the rest of your day

I've been consumed with garden chores all day. Now it's time for a glass of wine, a bonfire, and friends. Tomorrow I'll stop in before the garden calls me

Jekel- What a rough week for everyone. Thinking of you

I'm checking in around 7pm on Saturday...

Jekel, I am so sorry. I imagine you are operating on adrenaline right now (my BIL was Corrections at Rikers and then moved to FDNY so I understand) and I just wanted to let you know that you really did a lot for the family and please recognize your efforts and give yourself a little break too. I'm constantly grateful for our Finest and know it is never easy...just know that you are very appreciated by everyone here in NYC.

For myself: I woke up this morning in a horrible, nasty mood. AF started yesterday so there was no real reason I could put it down to. I got up and exercised which usually helps (and it did a bit) and then cooked and planned meals for the week which helped me feel more organized but not happier. It was not a good situation because we were going to our beach club today and bringing guests, and not only was I not in the mood to be social, I just wanted to crawl under a rock and NOT be nice and welcoming to anyone. But I pulled myself together and the bad mood mitigated itself slightly (I wouldn't even say 'lifted' because it was not that dramatic) by the afternoon and by the time I got home and had some wine and snacks I felt better. Just hoping that tomorrow is better. It's probably hormonal combined with some anxiety around other issues but I definitely do not want a repeat of today.

However, I did manage to stay relatively on plan. I'll check in again tomorrow am with you all.

Good morning, everybody! I'm trying to be cheerful as I'm only 37 minutes in to a 16 hour shift. Funny, we keep being told that that solution to not having so many mando shifts is to take more overtime voluntarily. Well, this makes my 4th OT shift this week...2 of those were voluntary. Then again, I've never been one that has to be coaxed to take OT...I like taking at least a shift or two per pay period. Not 4 in one week, though, LOL

Jekel - What a heartbreaking week. Bless you and your friends and co-workers. Unfortunately, anytime a police officer has something like that happen, the public becomes the resident expert on how things SHOULD have happened. Just a few weeks ago our guys responded to a robbery in progress and arrested the suspect on site. The first comment on the FB post was "aren't the cops supposed to wait until after the robbery so that hostage situations are avoided?" I wanted to be like "ohhhhhhhhh, what academy did you learn that at??? Oh, what, you're NOT a cop??? Nooooooo." *rolls eyes* So, yeah, keep in mind that from here on out you should respond to crime AFTER it's been completed. LOL

I joined the gym yesterday, FINALLY! I have been horrible about exercising since I moved to Massachusetts and you guys KNOW that I used to work out all the time. I did a Zumba class this morning...felt good to be back at it! Having said that...time to go put my goal in the exercise thread...gotta make myself accountable!

Good morning. Woke just after five and have been communing with the dogs and Nature for a while. We're at 57º and going to 85º and I want to grab as much as I can of what's left of summer.

Yesterday finally straightened itself out and we had all the bread sold by noon. Spent the afternoon helping with the bagging. I got stuck sewing the flour bags closed on an industrial machine that does a double chain-stitch! I did a lot of ripping out! Sort of mortifying since I have been sewing for 65 years but sure have not mastered this thing.

This morning, I am finally going to do some cleaning and then will straighten out the money from yesterday's sales. Also have payroll to do. Millie and I go for Lesson 2 of Dog Obedience and I sure hope it's not as difficult today as it was last week.

I hope we all have a Peachy Beachy day and get to see the Super Moon. So far I've missed it because I go to bed so early - seem very tired these days.

It's a pretty morning here, too, Ruth. I wasn't aware that we were having another supermoon tonight, but last night I sat out and watched for meteors, although I didn't see any.

I have to get groceries this morning, and then I want to clean up the garden this afternoon. Our cucumbers vines are finished and I want to pull them up, along with some of the spaghetti squash vines. I'm sure there will be another couple dozen tomatoes that need picking, too. I found a recipe for a zucchini ricotta pie that is delicious and pretty easy to make, and I'll have to post the recipe since it's SBD friendly.

My coffee mug is empty and I'd better get some breakfast and get ready. Have a great day!

Morning! Just a quick drop in as DH and I are going on a little excursion. This is the hike that didn't happen the last 2 days in a row.

Cottage, my cucumbers are going crazy right now. Hard to believe yours are done.

Have a good day, chicks!

Good morning ladies! It's going to be another beautiful day here. Yesterday we spent time at our beach club and decided to go back today. We only have three weekends left that we can be there this summer. However, yesterday they pulled a really big jellyfish out of the water - oh my god, it was enormous. We'll stick by the pool today.

Natasha, great on the gym. I have a gym in my complex, in the building next door. It's a struggle to get there. There have been times in my life when I have been so committed to exercise. This is not one of those times!

Hope everyone has a great day today. Enjoy the beautiful weather Ruth!!

Ruth not sure we will see the super moon tonight with so many clouds

Natasha I don't think I could handle 4 double shifts in a week. Glad you joined a gym

Cottage enjoy your day

Beth enjoy your hike

Matilda when we stopped in NYC for a day on our road trip we stayed on Long Beach and we went to the beach and saw a ton of Jelly Fish on the beach...needless to say I did not go in the water, DH did and got stung.
