Hi everyone! This looks like a great forum. I am starting South Beach tomorrow. I need a plan where I don't have to count, weigh and measure every single food item. I think I've found it!

One question: How strict with the nut portions are you? Thanks!

Hi and welcome!!

I am not a strict nut counter. However, I also am a vegetarian and look at nuts as part of my protein intake.

Thank you Tanner's mom. I have been thinking of going vegetarian for the longest time. Do you eat eggs and dairy? How are you finding being a vegetarian on South Beach? Any hints would be appreciated. Thanks!

porthardy, I have the book South Beach Supercharged. In fact I went and bought all the South Beach books that I saw on amazon! Now I have plenty of recipes! I see there's even a new book coming out on South Beach in September; not a cookbook, but another South Beach book.

I was asking about the nuts because I've heard some folks are not super strict but still lose weight well.

to The Beach. What an appropriate name!

The lists in our FAQ section are always up to date and are what most of us use when meal planning. The nut portions are listed there. We also have a fabulous recipe section - lots of simple and yummy recipes!

Southbeacher! You selected a great username, BTW! I am vegetarian, but do eat dairy and eggs, and I find this plan very easy to follow. There are several other vegetarians here, too, that are having great success following this plan.
Good to have you joining us!

southbeacher!

I love nuts and eat them every single day. Even after all this time, I am still a counter/measurer because it's so easy to go overboard with them. I portion pistachios or almonds into snack sized baggies so they're ready to grab and go.

I have been known to have more than 1 serving of nuts/day (usually when I dip into one of the 'emergency stashes' I keep at work and in my car) without a problem. I don't make a habit of it though.

Nut butters are where I get into trouble if I'm not careful. Even after all this time I still want more than 2 T.

You made a great choice, IMHO. I'm feeling quite the success story right now. This plan is really wonderful for me, not just for weight loss but for health benefits.

I love love love nuts. Eat them everyday. You will have to see for yourself if your portions slow your weight loss. For me, if they aren't salted I can two portions a day. I add pistachios to greek yogurt - yum! Also, love walnuts in salads.

South Beach is a wonderful plan but as you go into Phase II (or 1.5 as some of us say) you will really have to pay attention to your body, your hunger signals and cravings - if any. You will find the South Beach threads quite helpful (I sure have). The book was very good but I don't know if I could have done this without the experience and advice of the other chicks here!

Also, as porthardygurl mentioned, the recipes on this board are so creative and yummy. I always like to put a good word in for Spaghetti Squash Deep-Dish Italian Pie. It's amazing. Even my friends at work ask when I am making it again so I can share!

I do not eat dairy, because of lactose intolerance issues. I do eat eggs. As people have said you will know quickly what works for you and what doesn't. It is amazing how in tune with your body you become on SB.

Welcome! Nuts are the one thing I measure when I am following SBD. It is too easy to eat too many and they are pretty caloric.

Hello and welcome! I've been an ovo-lacto vegetarian for 21 years. I do count nuts because I love them so much that I would totally go overboard on them otherwise.

Hi and welcome!

I do count nuts, but not obsessively. If i'm hungry and have to buy something from a shop, I figure extra nuts are a way better choice than anything high in sugar. At least this way you'll get the good fatty acids and calories, rather than just calories and sugar high =)

southbeacher. I was never one to eat nuts until I started SB. I buy Emerald 100 calorie packs of dry roasted almonds or the cocoa roast almonds. I find they have a few too many almonds than what's allowed on the program but ate them anyway. Then I come up with the bright idea of taking the extra almonds out and putting them into a ziplock bag until I reach another serving size. I'm also going to experiment with other nuts but right now I'm on an almond kick.
