Sheba, I'm so sorry. That's absolutely awful, and it's certainly understandable to feel your faith shaken by something like this. Hope you and DH are able to find some peace.
As for the emotional eating, I can so relate. But perhaps the best way to honor your friends and their early loss of life is to ensure your own health and do all you can to help yourself live a long, healthy life. Does that make sense?
What one of the fantastic maintainers told me once may help you too. She was upset about something and wanted to eat, but she thought, "Right now, I'm sad. If I eat _____, I'll just be pudgy and sad." Overeating just adds guilt (and other things) to the pile of things we're struggling to carry.
