What's your top 5 SBD foods?

What are the top five things you can't live without on SBD (either P1 or P2)?

For me:

LF plain yogurt: I sweeten it for a snack, add fruit and cereal for breakfast, and use it savory in soups and sauces, make smoothies... I could have it at every meal and every snack

Brown rice: The first grain I added back in P1.5. I cook up a big thing of it each sunday and eat it through the week

Sugar Free Gum: I chew all day, everyday. Keeps me from grazing!

String Cheese: My favorite on-the-go snack

Eggs: I don't think I've ever eaten so many eggs in my life. It used to be I'd by a dozen, and I'd have to throw ten out after the expiration date. Now, I can't buy too many

The foods I couldn't do this without:

Beans! - refried, in stews & soups, dips & hummus, crunchies....

Cabbage - I discovered that simple steamed cabbage is a great base for all kinds of saucy dishes. It's replaced my pasta/mashed potato habit because I really do love meals that sit in heavily seasoned sauces.

Greek Yogurt

Eggplant - a vegetable I hated most of my life. I discovered that it would disappear into all kinds of things and make them thicker, more filling, and more nutritious. Now I add it to chili, marinara sauce, and all kinds of curries.

spices - I can make anything SBD friendly with the right spices

Eggs - "fried", deviled, omelettes, whatever

FF Plain yogurt. I have it nearly daily, often twice daily.

Beans - especially black beans. YUM!

Cashews. Need I say more?

Red peppers - eat them almost like an apple!! (I would if they were cheaper!)

1. Eggs! I've always loved eggs, and I love breakfast for dinner. My favorites are scrambled with veggies, fried with lf cheese, and hard boiled.

2. Non-fat cottage cheese. Another food I've always loved, I could eat this at every meal. Since I don't like salad, I have a half cup of cottage cheese with a bunch of veggies like cucumber and carrots to substitute for salad.

3. Non-fat plain yogurt. I don't like it alone, but love it with berries in a smoothie.

4. Spinach. I struggle to get enough veggies, especially with breakfast and lunch. So I have a cup of spinach in a smoothie with berries and NF yogurt and I can't even taste it. I'll also scramble it with eggs and add it to soup or stir fry.

5. Nuts, especially almonds and cashews. I have raw almonds as a snack almost every day. I just have to keep myself from eating too many!

1. Beans. Has this been on every list?
2. Peanut Butter.
3. Cheese -- string, cheddar, swiss, all rf
4. Eggs.
5. Milk.

When I'm hungry, any of the above list will take care of it. I also have to add tea to my list. Hot tea with milk is a wonderful, soothing treat.

Foods I have "discovered" since starting South Beach:

Almond butter: I love, love love it!

Beans: Who knew?

Greek yogurt: Where have you been all my life?

Olive oil: Makes everything taste better.

Eggs: Used to be afraid to eat them. Now I eat them regularly.

Of course I couldn't live without my chicken breasts, lean ground turkey, V-8 and reduced fat cheeses. I use a lot more dairy than I used to, so I don't supplement with as much Calcium.

My "saviors" on SB -

1. Buffalo burgers. MMMM MMMM MMMM...and now that it's grilling season, they're going to be even better!
2. Beans beans beans...
3. Peanuts - or any derivation of peanuts....peanut butter, etc. I *LOVE* them.
4. Laughing cow cheese. Such a healthy, nutritious snack...especially french onion. I heard a rumor that flavor is being discontinued. I so hope that's not true!
5. Cabbage. My new favorite veggie.

I'm definitely going to have to check around - I was going to pick some up because I was craving toast and noticed how expensive it was at the supermarket...needless to say, it didn't make it into the grocery cart. I'll check at the health food store, they are usually cheaper on stuff like that.

murphmitch 03-08-2009 10:43 PM

My health food store is about $1 cheaper than the supermarket.
