Is this normal??
Hi, everyone! I am new to this forum, and just started phase 1 for the first time ever on Saturday. I am so thrilled to have found this community!! The first two days went great: I felt good, and lost two pounds!! Which is thrilling considering that that is more than I lost over the last 2 months on a 1200 calorie diet. However, today I have felt ravenous for sweets, exhausted, and like my brain is in fog. Is that normal? Will it pass? I would greatly appreciate any experiences or advice on what I can expect. I read the book last week, but didn't see this side effect specifically addressed. Thank you all so much in advance!

Sounds like you have the South Beach Flu. It's perfectly normal and will pass quickly. It usually hits between day 3-5 for me.

Thank you, Dee! Do you know what causes this, or how long it usually lasts?

I had it too, on day 3. I was out of it and cranky. It will pass and you will feel much, much better by the end of the week!!! Stick with it! Have a big glass of water, or take a small nap.

Welcome Mary!
I was there also at the start of phase 1. It lasted 3-4 days for me. Be patient with your body- it is adjusting. You will feel better soon. Are you exercising? That helped me a lot.
I started phase 2 a few days ago, and am feeling great- hang in there!

Hi, everybody! Thank you so much for all of the encouragement. I am drinking lots of water--in fact, this has been a pleasant surprise so far for me. Usually, I am not thirsty, and will literally go days without taking a sip of water, just coffee and a diet soda at night. I know, I know, that's bad. But since starting this diet three days ago, I have been guzzling water. I am so determined right now, and am just going to ride it out, trusting you guys that this crappy feeling will pass!!
kristi-that sounds great!! I will try to post more, I have this problem where I am a serial lurker on message boards, but never post...I think it is because of some other boards I am a member of where people are rude and defensive and judgmental. However, everyone here seems really down to earth and supportive!
I know I am not getting the meals exactly right, partially because I am a vegetarian who hates eggs. I am SO looking forward to phase 2 when I can eat a little cereal or oatmeal for breakfast!
Today I've had:
B: rocotta with cinnamon, nutmeg, and splenda
Sn: 5 almonds/ LF mozzarella stick
L: salad with romaine, LF feta, and vinnaigrette
Sn: 10 almonds, LF mozzarella stick
D: planning on having stirfry with veggies and tofu
Sn: planning on trying the infamous ph1 "peanut butter cup"--so excited about that!
I know that is way to much cheese and not enough veggies--I need to work on that.
How did you like the waffle?

Nessa-- You're so right. And I love beans so much, I just ate them for lunch and dinner the last to days and somehow forgot about them today. I will work on making sure I have some with lunch. Also, is it absolutely necessary for me to have milk and yogurt? If so, how much?
Kristi--I will have to try that waffle.
Thank you so much!

not necessary but strongly recommended.
i'm really bad about my milk and yogurt too....
2 cups in phase 1 of low fat or non fat milk or plain yogurt is recommended daily.

Nessa-I have a quick question for you, since you mentioned edamame. I have never cooked it before, but have a frozen bag of it. Can I just toss it in with my stirfry, or does it have to be cooked in a special way?
Thank you!
