measuring waist ?

I wanted to keep track of inches lost as well as pounds, but I'm not sure I'm measuring correctly around my waist. I always measure just above my belly button. When I look at size charts, though, it says that for my waist size I should be wearing clothes fully 10 sizes bigger than what I actually wear! Anyone have any ideas as to where I'm going wrong?

Nothing helpful to offer here. But DD is always trying to convince me that the waist is just above the pubic bone, ya know, just above the "hairline." Seems like since the fashion has been to wear things so low, they have forgotten where the waist actually is. I always thought it was above the navel, where you curve in. But then I am from the 70's, and we wore our pants very high!
Just makes me wonder, if they put a waist size on low rise jean, is it actually the hip measurement? If so, the 28" waisted woman, would actually probably wear a 34" waisted jean.
Very confusing, and I don't wear low waisted anything, so I'm not sure how they do it now, but maybe that's why!

I always measure at the belly button, 2 inches above it and 2 inches blow it just to be certain.

When measuring your waist, you are supposed to measure at the slimmest part of your waist. For me, that is way up above my belly button.

Schmoodle - the pants your daughter is talking about used to be called "hip huggers" for a reason! They rest on your hips not at your waist :)

Edit to add - as far as those charts go, do they say which part of your waist to measure? You could always call the company and ask.

I measure at the slimmest part of my waist, and that, for me, is right at my belly button. Sizes are a nightmare - my waist measurement is two full sizes larger than I actually wear - if it weren't for my waist, I'd be two sizes SMALLER than I am... go figure.

I totally agree . . . the waist and the belly button are in slightly different places for different people . . . the general rule of thumb of using the smallest part of your body works well for most women.

Gotta chime in here!

My waist is the most out of proportion part of my body.. fortunately, low-rise jeans are in style!!

I count the smallest part as my waist. Having a small waist means I generally have to wear clothes a size or two BIGGER than this measurement to accommodate my hips and bust. Low-rise pants are a definate no-no as I'd need 4 sizes bigger:o

Thanks for the suggestions! Looking in the mirror it appears that the "curve" of my waist is a good 3 inches above my belly button. Maybe it has something to do with having 2 c-sections - heck, everything else got shifted around by them, why not my waist? lol
