Pre-Baby Weight Loss

  • My husband and I are wanting to have a baby within the next year or so, but I would like to lose 10-15lbs prior. That doesn't sound like a lot, but I have a really hard time losing weight. I'm trying to get on a schedule of walking 3-4 times a week on my treadmill and we work out at a gym once or twice a week. I feel like if I get in a routine of exercise/diet prior to getting pregnant, I'll be able to stick to it easier during and after.
Anyone else in this same boat, I'd be glad to keep in touch.
  • One of the reasons I have been trying to lose weight is because I want to have a baby and I don't want to be miserable during my pregnancy. I have lost 23 lbs so far. I hope to lose at least 20 - 30 more.

    Good luck

  • I just want to tell you both that you are SOOOOO smart! You do not want to be like me, coming to this board after having 2 children and needing to lose 75 pounds! Start NOW and keep with it during pregnancy with the guidance of your doctor. I have never had a weight problem, so when I got pregnant, everyone told me I would be fine. As the months went on, and I ate everything in site, still people told me, "You're all baby!" "You have a high metabolism, go ahead and splurge."
Well, the baby came, and the weight stayed.
I just want to give you guys 'kudos' for going into pregnancy prepared. Take care of your body now and during pregnancy, so that when your baby does come, you can enjoy him/her instead of obbsessing over weight loss!
    Good luck!

  • rlwiggins400:

I am trying to do the very same thing. My fiance and I are planning to start a family with two years or so. I really want to get into the HABIT of eating right and exercises so when I do get pregnant I can not only be at my lowest weight, but I will also be in the habit of working out during the pregnany to cut down on the chances of not being able to bet the weight off after the baby is born. Once you get into a good habit of eating right and exercising it becomes part of your daily life and it is NO problem to get that post-baby weight off and keep it off. I would love to keep in touch with you and others regarding our weight-loss goals. Especially since we are all trying to lose for the same reasons.

  • Like you, duchessnicole, my hubby and I are looking at children in about 2 years. Not because we don't want them now (and trust me I DO!) but because we need to build a house first. We live in an old farmhouse, and need more room, etc...

But I am about 35 lbs. overweight by my reckoning. I started working out at Curves for Women, a local resistance training gym, a couple months ago, and have lost 4 lbs. I don't seem to eat the wrong things too often, just too much of them! With no exercise before! That's why I gained.

Anyway, I want to be fit before I get pregnant, and I want to be able to exercise throughout the pregnancy and have the proper eating habits. I also want to be able to lose the post-baby weight easily.

I'd love to have a thread here to help me get motivated and stay there if you're all interested?!?!??

  • Shall we move to the support forum? I think that might be a better place to do this in....

I do not have a puter at home, so I have to post at work (Mon-Fri), and I'm off tomorrow, so no access until Monday. Did you want to take the initiative, duchess?

    Have a great weekend!

  • I'm so glad someone responded to my post. Glad I'm not alone. I'm basically in the same boat, but my husband and I would like to get preg w/in the next year or so. We'd like to be in a house first too, but if not, that's ok. Right now, I'd prefer the baby to the house. I've been walking and working out about 4-5 nights a week, but I can't seem to lose weight. I can tell I'm toning, but not losing. But I know why. I haven't started working on fixing my eating habits. That's next.
    I'm 26, my husband is 25, we've been married 6 1/2 years, 5'9" and 153lbs. I'd like to lose about 10-15lbs.
I'm scared to death about blowing up and out when I get pregnant. I have a 10 month old nephew (my pride and joy) but my sister in law gained 55!!! lbs with him. And she's still working on losing it.
I have some inspiration though. A friend at work is going to deliver (induced) tomorrow and she has only gained 20 lbs.
Well, I hope everyone will keep in touch and give each other some encouragement. And be sure to let us know if anyone pops up preggers.
  • Wow, it's nice to know that there are others in the same boat. I'm 33 and married a few months. We too are going to try to get pregnant in the next year or so but I have to lose atleast 75lbs before I even start trying. I've been on weight watchers for about 4 weeks and I'm down about 20 pounds. I've had a weight problem all of my life but for some reason, this has given me the incentive to start a diet and stay on it. By the way, I'm on weight watchers and i really like it so far, it seems to be very easy.
  • Wow, LGR, you are doing GREAT!!

I'm very impressed with your success on WW, you should be proud

The "chicks" here have moved over to the Support threads - you should catch up and join in over there when you get a chance!

I'm happy to see so many women really thinking of the health of themselves and their future babies - this is a great trend! Come check it out over under Support!
Your success will motivate the rest of us!

  • You guys are doing great... I am not planning on having anymore, would love to but God's not willing....

I just want to but a little note into you... If you lose a lot of weight before you get pregnant, just like yo-yo dieting- once you hit you goal weight you need to maintain a while before you get pregnant. From experience.... I was a my lowest adult weight when I got pregnant with my son, my body went into over drive trying to compensate for my weight loss and eating normally (as directed by my doctor) I gained from 123 to 205..... My normal weight was 140lbs so I gained what I lost back plus an additional 60 lbs. (I promise and swear that I was not eating for TWO- I was a broke single woman- I was bearly able to eat for one)
I couldn't make myself not gain weight. Granted it wasn't hard to loose at 21 but I just wanted to warn you to try to maintain your goal weight for a while (this is what my OB/GYN suggested was my problem, some mombo jumbo about your bodies defense mechanisms.... blah, blah...) before you start trying to have your babies.

GOOD LUCK in all matters, the weight loss and the pregnancy....
    Amy
  • By the way rlwiggins400.... Not to dismiss your want to lose weight but technically your not that much over weight. 5'9 and 153 isn't really overweight by the charts.... You will probably loose all you want just by walking and going to the gym and stay going....

I gained 82 lbs with my first child and 75 with my second...(not the recommended amount of weight to say the least) I would say that if you stay active during and after your pregnancy and putting on some mucles prior to getting pregnant will help you loose afterwards. I was down to 150 within two weeks with my first baby and back in my pre-maternity clothes with in the month with both of my kids.

Granted I have a weight problem now, that is not related to pregnancy... I wish you a lot of luck with both goals though.
