Nose Run during Cardio anyone?

  • My nose runs so horribly when I do cardio. It DRIVES ME INSANE!
Is there a cause/cure for it?
I was thinking about taking an anti-histamine, but it would probably make me very very tired.
  • Mine does too! In fact mine runs constantly from September to May!

I haven't found a cure/cause, but I personally have a theory that it's to do with temperature change. I often find if I've been jogging outside in the cold then I'll come in and my nose will run, or it will run when I am hot and I'm in a cold environment.
  • That makes sense to me too, then, because I get the same way, when I go out to shovel snow and then come in, it runs like a faucet! So I guess it would make sense that when I go from a comfortable temperature to sweating so much that my nose would run! I just started using a towel for my sweat, and I hate using it to wipe my nose with too! (Plus I feel weird sniffeling while I'm on the machine!)
  • How about just using a hankerchief? Or those terry cloth wrist bands? Washing betwee uses, of course. I have the same problem when I exercise outdoors, not so much in the gym. My DH's nose runs when he eats Bodies are just strange....
  • YES! I always have a handkerchief with me. When I run, I have to wear shorts with pockets because one pocket is for the snot rag, which I use liberally after I start running, and the other holds a wash cloth to wipe away the sweat.

In the gym, I tuck a handkerchief in my waistband or drape it over whatever machine I'm using. I figure that I wipe the machines down with cleaner when I'm done so what the heck.
  • Yup, I just wipe. It's part of my pre-walk check. Tissue in pockets? check!
  • Tissue? And here I always thought that's what my t-shirt was for.
  • Hey!

I have no idea about why your nose might run, but I'm going to advise against the anti-histamine. I run quite a bit, and allergies were bad in the spring. I asked my running coach about taking a anti-histamine before running, and she said it was a bad idea because it does something to mess with the way your body absorbs or processes water or something when you exercise. So you can more easily get dehydrated. She said it was fine to take afterwards though.
