Natural Laxative

  • This is really Phase II only but sometimes we have to break the rules.

My friend Fern found this in the cookbook that a cancer organization sent her. The book has all kinds of recipes for different situations like those days when stuff doesn't taste good, etc.

    1 1/4 cup unprocessed bran
    1 cup prune juice
    1 TBS molasses or honey
    1 cup apple sauce

Mix together and store in the refrigerator in a covered container for up to seven days.

Stir before taking. Take 2 TBS at night before bedtime. Reduce dose to 1 TBS if 2 does the job too well! Adjust dose up to 3 or 4 TBS if the 2 TBS doesn't seem to work well enough.

The book says it's easiest to buy the prune juice in the 6-packs of small cans so that it stays fresh.
  • Hey Ruth did you ever try this? Did it work?
  • I know this is an old post, but as a nurse with long term care experience, I can tell you, yes, this does work. We call this "power pudding" and it does keep you regular.
  • What is 'unprocessed bran'?
  • It's the bran you buy to make bran muffins.
  • Another nurse popping in to state that hospitals use a concoction pretty much like this. Some folks prefer a heaping spoonful on an empty stomach with a warm drink.

    Like All-Bran cereal?
  • In the baking section you should be able to find a box of bran ... just bran for making muffins.
  • Thanks, Susan. Since I've been on SBD, Dulcolax has become a friend -- and I don't want that friend.
  • I even have a friend in Alabama who could check brands or availability for you if you'd like. Natural is best!
  • I should be able to find things, but thank you for the offer. Where is your friend? I'm about 35 miles north of Birmingham.
  • About 45 minutes south-westish I think. It takes about that long to get to the Summit.

Ok, you must be near Cullman, I was born and raised in Cullman. my family still lives there.
  • I find apples alone to do the trick!
  • Willow, Cullman is further north than Remlap. I've been to Smith Lake many times. Remlap is closer to Oneonta, if you know where that is...

RNBSN, It's been a couple of weeks since I've had an apple. Sunday was my first day on ph2.
