Doctor's Appt this week...

  • I had a doctor's appointment yesterday and it went badly.

The doctor has been trying to adjust my blood pressure meds so I can try to get pregnant and it was 176/115!!

He was very frustrated. Over the last few months, we have tried I don't know HOW MANY drugs and none of them are working. GRR! I have been one med for years (since 96, I think) that has been very effective at controlling my BP but neither my GP or the OB want me on it when I trying to get pregnant.

So, he changed my meds get again. I hope it works this time. I've already filled one months worth of Clomid and something else my OB/Gyn gave me for to try to get pregnant, but now I'm afraid to take it.
  • Hi Jackie.

I was put on bp meds when I was preg and have been on them since. My bd was 145/99 when they prescribed them. I was on 100mg of Atenolol and was given with by a maternal cardiac specialist so if you haven't tired that, it's safe to take while pregnant. I'm sure you have tried it though since it's one of the older drugs on the market from what I understand.

I took clomid when trying to get preg. What else have they given you? I eventually did IVF with injectible meds to have my son, after losing two babies prior to my pregnancy with him. I was 315 lbs when I got pregnant and had an easy pregnancy so once you're pregnant hopefully things will be smooth sailing.

    Good luck!
  • Sorry to hear your having so much trouble with your BP! Hopefully as you continue to lose weight that problem will go away. I know it did for me.
  • Hi Jackie, I know this is probably not what you want to hear and I am so sorry if this offends you or hurts your feelings in any way because that is certainly not my intention. But I feel like I have to ask because I am scared for you and your potential baby. Have you really considered holding off on trying to conceive until you've brought your weight (and most likely your BP along with it) down some? I don't know if you have high BP naturally and would have it even if you were thinner but if it is something more weight related then wouldn't it be a good idea to at least try that route first? I know that when I was my heaviest I was developing chronic high BP and my Dr. was starting to discuss different options like medications. But since losing just some of the weight my BP stabilized and I haven't had a problem with it since. Believe me, I know the desire to have a child, but I'm scared that the potential harm to both you and your child in, what I guess would be a high risk pregnancy, are just too great a risk to take, IMO. I'm sure you've already agonized over all of this, but I just felt an overwhelming need to at least ask. Again, I'm sorry if I've offended you in any way, and I realize that it is certainly not my place to question your personal choices. So please don't take this inquiry the wrong way. I want to wish you all the best and will support you no matter what, because we are all family here and that's what families are for.

    Much love,
    Beverly
  • Boiaby - No offense taken. I filled the RXs from my OB after I went in for a check up with my GP and my blood pressure was coming way down. I thought we had found a med that would be baby-friendly AND was effective at controlling my BP. I went in this week for another BP check and it is thru the roof again! And it's the same med has 2 weeks ago! So, I'm not sure what the deal is. The doc just about threw his hands up in the air.

I think don't and neither my GP and OB really give me any hope that losing weight will be a big answer on the BP issue FOR ME. Both docs have encourage weight loss for general health but they have both told me that my BP will not respond the typical way... and it probably won't. I've had horrible BP issues since I was 17 and weighing in at 180 (not skinny by any shot but no where close to what I am now). The docs could not find a medical reason for the BP issues when I was 17.. I got every darn test known to man it felt like.

So, it boils down to this: the GP and OB will have to help me find a med or combo of meds that will hold the BP down in a safe range and still ok for pregnancy. Waiting until "I'm skinny" has gotten me to 33 and with no babies. The OB has said I can't wait forever. He only wants controlled BP.

I don't want to me or a baby at risk, so I want controlled BP as well. I'm not going to do the Clomid until I have a few good readings in a row. So.. one more change and we will see I guess.

Stinger .. The doc already tried Atenolol (it was one of the 1st). The other drug he put me on was metformin.
  • Not that it compares with people who have official high blood pressure, but I've actually had my blood pressure go up since I've lost weight. As long as I can remember (from 16 or so), my blood pressure has been 90-100/60. Last couple months though, every time I get my blood pressure taken, it has been around 120/80. I know that is normal but high for me. I started to get concerned about it but I have been keeping track of it to make sure it doesn't go higher.

Jackie, I hope you can get it under control, I know it can be frustrating but keep at it and I'm sure you'll find the right mix.
  • mine was 122/81 when i checked it in college last week and according to my doctor i'm clincaly obese and endangering my health guess he can take my 122/81 and shove it lol
  • Just hang in there. Hopefully it will all get straightened out. Remember that stress can cause it to raise and if you are worried when they are taking it, that can affect it.
