Need good supermarket in Buffalo area

  • Hello all... I'm hoping somebody out there can help me out.

I live in Toronto, Ontairo, and I'm getting kind of sick of seeing all kinds of postings/info on products available in the US (both WW and 'regular' foods) that are not available here in Canada - so I'm going to make a break for it!

Next weekend my fiancee and I are going to rent a car and drive to the US so I can see just what it is I'm missing, and to stock up on as many of the goodies I've seen talked about as I can. Problem is, I don't know my way around the Buffalo area at all, and wouldn't have the first clue about finding a good (meaning well stocked) supermarket in the area.

Is there anyone out there who can direct me to a supermarket in the Buffalo area that carries a good selection of either WW products, or other low fat products?

    Thanks!

    Christine
  • Both Wegmans and Tops are located in the Buffalo area and have good selections as far as various lowfat and WW items. You can check out the locations (I believe) on their websites.

    Good luck!
  • I live in Niagara Falls Canada, and I always go to Buffalo for food. Wegman's sells 1pt hotdog and hamburger buns (it's Wegman's brand) I get the fat free eggo waffles from Tops (I think) I know you can get them from Tops or Wegman's, one of them doesn't sell it and the other does, but I can't remember which one it is. I get the No Pudge brownies from Wegman's also. Laughing Cow Cheese light is impossible for me to find in Canada so I stock up on that, as well as the Kraft fat free shredded cheeses. Wow chips are available, and I also get Kashi. I haven't been able to find any other supermarkets close to the border in the Buffalo area, but I'm not one for exploring. Good luck!
  • wegmans is the best!
I'm actually from Rochester, about an hour east of Buffalo so I don't know the exact locations of the stores. But I do know that Wegmans, if you find a big one, there is one in Amherst/Niagara Falls, will have almost anything you want to find. The only thing that I've been dying to find here in upstate NY are the skinny cows. Can't find them anywhere....

MelissaL is right, I know that Wegmans has a website (and I'm sure Tops does too) Wegmans is actually a Rochester-based store and I prefer it over Tops. but Tops is Buffalo-based, so their stores are nicer than the Tops stores here.....Tops has tons of international foods too.

Good luck, let us know what you find!

  • Skinny cows in Niagara Falls NY
Wegman's in niagara falls NY has the skinny cows.

For my Toronto WW, don't bother to go into Buffalo too confusing.

Get off at the first exit to Niagara Falls N.Y. Head for the outlet Mall, you can't miss it the exit number is on all the signs. Exit the I-90 turn left, now you are on Niagara Falls Blvd. Keep on driving. You will find a Tops
supermarket on your left a few blocks down, it is next to a target store.

Shop to your heart's content and then continue further along Niagara Falls Blvd to Military Road. Left again and just before you reach the outlet Mall there is a Wegman's on your right.

Hope this helps, I was just over AGAIN this past Sunday. I go over every two to three months, to stock up. I know its expensive with the exchange, but I just use my credit card and chalk it up to better health, and a greater variety in my diet. Good luck Carol
  • Carol,

Thanks for that info. Don't know why I thought Buffalo would be better when N.F, N.Y is straight across the Rainbow Bridge. Duh.

A few questions, though... We've got a map here but can't seem to quite follow your directions. We can't find an I-90, though there is a hwy 190, which seems to come from the Queenston - Lewiston Bridge. Is that where your directions are coming from? From the Rainbow Bridge (where we would probably cross) we see that hwy 62 (Ferry Avenue) takes us to Niagara Falls Blvd and then onto Miliary Road, where the Niagara Factory Outlet Mall is. Does that sound about right?

    Thanks again for your help!

  • Niagara Falls Boulevard is the main street...there are a lot of stores and such along this road. Good luck in your quest for the low point foods!
  • Carol's Directions
I always cross at Queenston, the 190 is the I90, I just find it a lot easier and faster to cross there. This way I avoid the temptation of Casino Niagara.

Hope this helps, good luck on your quest. Carol
  • I grew up in Rochester NY but now I live in Chicago. And I really miss Wegman's. It is one of the best supermarket chains I have seen. When I I lived in Rochester I took it for granted that all supermarket chains are as good as Wegman's. Not !
  • I would have a very tough time if I ever moved away from Rochester, I just love Wegmans and have heard so many people talk about how much they miss it when thyey move. I can find anything at wegmans!!!!!

  • Buffalo NY Supermarkets
Just a suggestion - Check out the websites for the stores first and then you can catch the sales. The Wegmans hot dog & hamburger rolls are due for a sale any time now. Tops is slightly less expensive on WW items for regular prices, both have excellent sales on frozen entrees for Healthly choice/Lean Cuisine. If you make it to Bflo vs Niagara Falls, You may want to check out BJ's Wholesale Club. (There may be one in NF, but I am not sure- I live in Kenmore.) They tend to have bulk SmartOnes/Lean Cuisine(3pk or 6pk) at good prices when there no sales in the area.

I am on WW but also on a very tight budget, so I try to shop only the sales. Too bad Weggies doesn't have online sales!

    Go Sabres!
  • Wegmans rules!
Go to http://www.wegmans.com and sign up for their Fresh News newsletter. They will send you weekly recipes, health food news, and links to their sales. You can even make a shopping list from the sale and regular items. Store locations and customized shopping for your store are there, too. As for online sales, suggest it! You never know- Weggies will try just about anything to keep a customer happy. Good luck!

One yummy item to try: Zweigle's Lite hots. Taste just like Zweigle's skinless red hots (awesome hot dogs to the rest of the world) but only 2 points each. They're here in Rochester, probably in Niagara Falls, too.
