  • DS called while I was writing my last post and was very talkative. She and BIL going out to see Daddy about now. I never got him this morning so he must have gone to the church service they have there on Sundays. We have our 3 month meeting with top people at the facility Thursday so we decided that we will go out to eat afterwards some where over in that part of time. We have a lot of choices and may end up at Golden Coral.

Pipsicle It is frustrating when you eat off and feel better and even lose weight and then feel worse and gain the weight back when you get OP. I've experienced that a lot too and never been sure what that means. I seem to be getting bs under control, but weight doesn't seem to co-operate much. Lots of questions and I'm not sure even doctors or nutritionists have the answers since some people get both going for them and some don't and some eat Vegan, some Vegetarian, some low fat and some LCHF, etc. I just hope that getting BS under control is making me healthier like the nutritionist seems to think it is. Time will tell.

My doctor in SC always said that he thought I was more Insulin Resistant than diabetic. Not sure exactly how to take care of that either so I decided after reading The Personalized Diet to just try to go by bs readings after eating certain foods to see how they affect my insulin spikes and adjust food and diet accordingly. It seems to work keeping bs down, but I think it only helps me maintain weight within about 5 to 7 lbs so far. I am hoping as I get the bs under control that the weight will start coming down as well.

When Daddy lived at home and we had control of his meds, Daddy took Omega 3 supplements etc although he never ate right. He has always loved the junk food and sugar that he still manages to get when he goes to Walmart. I have no idea if Daddy still gets the supplements he used to take. The doctor of the nursing home where he lives takes care of that and we never see him or the PA who is supposed to in charge of him. I like the fact that the people are good to Daddy but I have never liked the idea the doctor supposedly has an office in a little town south of here, but I don't think he ever sees a patient yet he is the doctor over several nursing homes in the area. I really have a problem with that but not anything I can do about it.

Hope everyone has a good day.
  • Pipsicle although I mainly try to keep my meals low carb, I lean more toward eating what I like rather than what I think I should be eating. I find that to be more satisfying and I think I end up eating less. When I worked at one job there was a McDonald's on the way. I stopped for a breakfast sandwich every morning and if they had a 2 fer special I would get 2. I loved them. When I left that job there was no McD on the way to the next job. I thought I would lose weight but No. No weight loss. I don't know when I stopped loving them. I lost weight since then but it was very gradual.

I went to that baby shower I didn't want to go to and had a great time. The walk to the pavilion wasn't as bad as I expected. If I hadn't gone my DIL wouldn't have had anyone to sit with. We didn't know most of the people there. The mom to be got a lot of nice gifts. I'm glad I went.

Trish I think type 2 diabetics start out with insulin resistance and it eventually leads to pre diabetes and then to diabetes. I wish I had taken action when I was insulin resistant.

When DH was in the nursing home for rehab they said the doctor was coming in to check him but the guy had on a tag that said CRNP. I think these places are using them more now to save money. The prescriptions they gave v him were signed by a doctor that DH never saw. I think they just have to be able to say there is a doctor. Our PCP said he sees patients there but he was never told DH was there.

Now we have to go to Walmart. DH has no bread and Rusty has no treats.
    .
  • In the spirit of honesty and truth, I want to report that FBG was 159 this am. Can you say "Cheesecake?". I got a 2 slice pkg at Walmart. Luckily I didn't buy a whole cheesecake. Blood sugar was 77 when we got home so I foolishly thought the G I took with dinner was enough to cover. It was not, but the spike was nowhere near when I had the ice cream. Not it that it's ok. Just enough to remind me.

Today I had scrambled eggs with sauteed peppers, onion, mushroom and tomato. It was so good!. I diced the rest of the pepper and onion and froze it for future use and also diced a tomato separately to freeze. I don't know if the tomato well freeze well and I didn't want to ruin the pepper and onion by mixing the tomato in with it. I don't know what dinner will be.It's up to DH.
  • Carol Sue In the spirit of truth and honesty, I have had 2 of the worst days of eating. I hate it but I don't think drinking replacement meal shakes is for me. Plus I have gained weight back up to 217.6 and stayed there for 2 days. FBG was 124 yesterday and 122 today, but it was better before I decided to use Slim-fast shakes.

I was in Overeaters Anonymous years ago and they always stressed the importance of eating our meals instead of drinking them because we needed the "chew power". I think that was said so much that it has become a part of my life. I have never been able to stay with a shake replacement plan for any length of time. So with the "chew power", I ate a brunch around 11:15 this morning. LOL. I had my eggs for breakfast. My bs before breakfast was 134 and 1 hr after breakfast 135 so that is good. My before breakfast 124.

We are going to see Daddy and shopping. DH will be ready to leave in 15 minutes. LOL

    Have a great day.
  • Trish I could never do shakes. To me it was like having a milk shake so I wanted a burger with it. LOL. I do know of many who have had great success with them. I guess it's just not us!

My uric acid test came back positive but the doctor doesn't think I have gout. ???? He did prescribe gout meds. I read about them online and I don't want to take them. It says online that it interacts with one of my BP pills. That might be why the pharmacy has not called about it yet. I don't drink or eat a lot of the foods that increase uric acid so nothing to change there. It did say that psoriasis can raise uric acid. He still wants me to go for the nerve test. And he still thinks I have PF. So no good news.
  • FBG 99 this am. I am so happy I've learned how to manage this and can't wait to get my A1c. I have not been doing this well for the whole 3 months but I should still have a noticeable improvement. It was 6.7 last year and 6.4 earlier this year. Do I dare wish for a drop to a 5? I've only been there once in 11 years and that was when I was exercising a lot.

Today I am going to up my water. That is one way to lower uric acid and I know I don't drink enough. ACV helps too. You CAN have high uric acid and not have gout. Part of me wishes it was gout because I think I can lower UA without the med after all I read yesterday. I hate the thought of adding another pill.

I think I am going to eat alone this am. I am hungry and DH won't be up for a while.
  • Carol Sue I looked up uric acid and I really don't eat much of the foods that causes the problems unless it would be t he beef. It also mentioned eating organ meats which I don't eat much of any more. I saw something somewhere today that said that carbs and sugar do not cause diabetes. This just confuses things for people. It may or may not cause it, but it sure causes problems controlling it. Crazy things out there these days. As crazy as things are, I at way over my calories yesterday and although my weight is up, my FBG was 118 this morning. Go figure.

We stopped and got KFC and I had added some of my raw bagged slaw to their slaw and at 3 pieces of chicken because I didn't want to throw it out. I think next time I'm going to look up and see about getting individual 2 pc meals because I hate throwing out 1 piece of chicken because DH gets the 5 piece. I don't mind throwing out the biscuits that I don't like. I got to where I would throw out the extra piece but it is hard to do. I didn't eat the batter on all of it and I drank lemon water after to kind of help with the bs reading and evidently it worked. I got hungry last night like I usually do around midnight but decided that I did not want to eat so I let it go and the hunger went away.

I just listened to one of those ads that show up at the bottom of our posts on here and it was interesting. I was selling an expensive product along with saying eat most fish, fruit, veggies and fiber carbs. So there are a lot of ideas out there. Supplement made sense as all of them do, but as usual they are so expensive. Nothing much new when it comes to diets. Cut back on processed foods exercise etc..

Any way you should have a really good A1c reading this time. I'm working hard to keep mine down too. I hope to have mine back down in the 5s this time too. it was barely into low 6s but had been in upper 5s before so hoping for that again.

I told DH that I had to have a new top mattress for our bed because I think it is what is hurting my back so we got a new one while at Sam's. I slept like a baby. Back was still sore just a bit but not as bad as it was when sleeping on the old one. DH is going to cut the old one and make us some pillows to sit on and I want one to put in my chair for my back. We got these chairs because DH likes them but mine has never felt right for the shape of my back. I use 2 throw pillows stacked behind me in my chair which falls all the time so he is going to cut a long piece and I hope I can find a king size pillow case that will fit it.

Baby sister's son is coming home for Father's Day so he is going to go Sunday and get Daddy and take him out to her house and we are all going to go there and celebrate Father's Day with Daddy. BIL is going to cook up a lot of meat and we will help with side dishes and desserts etc. I think I will check into getting a birthday cake for him and we can do his birthday at the same time. Not sure how he will do with so many people since it kind of set him into this demensia the last time he was with all of them, but we decided at 96 we don't know how many more if any Father's Days we will have with him. We will deal with things as it comes.

Hoping for a better eating day today and I need to go exercise on recumbent bike. Hope everybody has a nice day.
  • Trish I took the first pill today. It lowers uric acid but does not relieve pain. I'm not sure how it works. I will read up on it some more. I don't think I eat a lot of the foods that increase it or drink. Most people I know who have gout drink beer often.
  • Carol Sue I'm trying to start drinking more water since it is supposed to help with that. I think my joints felt a little better today. I realized that maybe I had never had a lot of problems with this in the past was because of all the water I used to drink. Maybe if I start drinking a lot of it again I will get rid of the inflammation by diluting the uric acid.
  • Trish I am not optimistic about the lower uric acid improving my pain because I don't think that's what is causing it. Maybe in the two fingers that are swollen but I have no swelling or redness in my feet at all and that is the first sign. I tried to find information saying you could have gout without swelling or redness and couldn't find it. I felt so sleepy and groggy after taking that pill. If I do ok today with no side effects I will start taking it at bedtime. The tart cherry extract is supposed to help too and I also think the ACV, too. I wish I knew how long it took to see improvement so I would know what to expect.

DH is so determined that we go to the amusement park next month. I know I would just hold everyone back from having a good time. They will always be waiting for me because I walk so slow. That is not fun for them. They will want to get to the next ride. I think DH wants to see this park one more time. We both have gone to this park since we were little kids and it holds a lot of memories. I get that. The last time we went was 2 years ago and that was too much walking for me back then. It is not better now. He doesn't want to accept that. I feel bad about it but can't change the circumstances.

I agree that you should have the Fathers Day get together and celebrate his birthday. I think he will enjoy going out even if he doesn't remember everyone. Otherwise he might feel neglected. You could also ask him what he wants to do.

DH doesn't like Fathers Day because he says he has to sit around waiting for his kids to come. He says the best way they could honor him is to let him do what he wants. And I know he will want to go to the casino. Lol it is fine with me if he wants that. It is his day and we didn't go last week at all.
  • Well, more affirmation that this WOE really works, even when I am not right on plan. After a week of eating "non-low carb" and having some treats, like drinks, twice, one day with ice cream and chips (although that replaced a meal, LOL) etc. and no fasts (not successful at that while away) I weight 151 this morning. No big gains to "make up" for.
I have not been walking etc as much as I would like so will do that in the next while.
I am just doing a quick post and will read the posts I missed at my leisure. We came home early due to poor weather and bugs. The blackflies and mosquitos were working together to chase people away. The Blackfly is, I think a Northern Ontario and Quebec bug that bites chunks out of you, and were known to kill cattle with swarms in the old days. Some years are worse than others.
Anyhow we are going to have a "stay-cation" for the next little while. May go back up later this month for a few days.
Hope things are good here, like I say, I will be reading and catching up on things. Have a good Wednesday
  • Sorry to hear that the bugs chased you home but you still have some time off and can go back later. Your woe has become a way-of-life. That is what we aim for.

The sewer company just did a dye test and said we passed. I will let out a sigh of relief when we get the confirmation letter. Failing would have cost us thousands. We need a vent which is less than $100. Calls for a celebration.
  • Quote: Carol Sue I understand where you are coming from about the info out there. DH found another YouTube doctor who talked about the Diabetic Scam out there. He mentioned something that DH is wondering about something the doctor says milk causes in some people as he talked more about T-1.5 and T-2 diabetics. He gives a lot of info on the problems with some of the meds we are given even Metformin. He pretty much had us until he started talking about eating starches which sounds more like the old school way of eating and I know from my own experience that a lot of starchy carbs causes me loads of problems. DH and I decided to keep doing what we are doing and cut back on the starchy carbs. One of the things I seemed to understand from him is that some the higher numbers didn't seem to bother him. He said T2 diabetics should never be put on oral meds. All they need to do is lose weight. The T1.5 may need a small amount of insulin because their body isn't able to resist insulin like the T2 does.
Trish: I was pretty skeptical about Dr. Fung's work at the beginning, especially since some of the research he quoted was old. However, its age was appropriate, some of the research was done, but ignored in the future, and without funding, updated research wasn't done. He was also wide in breadth of research, and didn't discredit good research that didn't "jibe" with his ideas. For instance, he didn't go against the plant based diet, and showed a great deal of good research supporting it, and also low carb diets, even though they are at odds to some degree. His main point was about IF and EF as a way to manage weight, with a good diet to support that.
There are whole university level courses on reading and evaluating research. When we read someone else thoughts on the subject, we expect them to do that for us to some degree, after all they are doctors or have a doctorate and should be able to do that. I get red flags when they ignore a great deal of research, or are pushing something that doesn't have good research behind it. Think the celery juice diet, the grapefruit diet etc.
another red flag is anything that involves a large investment on your part, selling products etc.
After Dr. Atkin's died, his family sold the name to a company that produces "low carb" products like shakes and candy bars etc. While the Atkin's diet itself is fine, the "new" Atkins doesn't really have the same research backing it, and is not as healthy, because they support a lot of things like sugar substitutes and store bought products. Big issue for me, same with WW and their memberships and products.
Anything that makes weight loss a big business and takes the cooking out of our hands is likely to have some flaws in its thinking, ,and its success.
All of us on here have tried WW with varying success. but long term, it clearly has not worked out.

Keep doing what is or was working, and is workable. I like IF because it works no matter what I eat, I can lose weight on it with LCHF, but I can maintain with a more varied diet. What you were doing a couple of months ago seems to have helped, and you have been working that and maintaining while you try some tweaks, etc. Keep up the good work!
  • Pipsicle, I can see why that would really push your buttons, losing weight and feeling great while eating poorly seems counter intuitive. I wonder why that happened and if it can be replicated. Feeling dragged out and tired like you are is the worst.
I wonder if you would be able to find time to try an elimination diet. (google Low FODMAP) Its totally free, and within your control. You may find there are certain "trigger" foods affecting you. You do have to be compliant for at least 3-4 weeks for some foods. Even if your gut isn't bothering you, food intolerance can play a role.
On my other lists I see people wishing they could have been diagnosed much sooner because they feel so much better.
For me, it was gut pain, but the side effect of the diet change is the lack of pain. I have not otherwise had a huge change in quality of life, but going thru life feeling exhausted and crummy is not your best life, and finding a way to deal with it could make things a lot easier.
If the diet change doesn't work, it costs nothing and its not a big deal. Just 3 weeks of boredom with food. Its hard to stick to, just like any diet plan, but for the short term is doable.
Other thoughts are to go back to how you ate those days, and look at what else is different.

I got out for a 35 minute walk with DH this morning, and did some weeding in the garden, and cut some flowers. Now to start on the laundry from a week of being away.
  • fatmad Sorry the bugs and weather sent you home early, but glad to hear from you. You are doing so well with your plan because it seems to be more of way of life rather than a diet.

I appreciate your encouragement about Dr. Fung and the other doctor I saw. I see a lot of things on line and check them out but I've been in this for so long that I have learned what doesn't or wouldn't work for me. In fact, it took me a while to learn that just because something works for some people doesn't mean it will work for me. Also, like you mentioned I have learned not to trust ALL the research because I've heard that sometimes they don't give what the research tests actually mean but instead they give their opinion of what it means which doesn't always mean it is correct.

Carol Sue I agree about having the party for Daddy although now DS and I are wondering about it because Baby sister was talking about having it at a park close to where she lives because there are so many of us and it is supposed to be 97 degrees Sunday and I don't know if Daddy can stand the heat. In fact, DS and I aren't even sure she and I can handle being out in 97 degree weather. So we may have to do it, but not make it as long an event as we would if we could have it inside.

I understand about walking all over an amusement park. DH SIL wanted us to meet them in Orlando next month and go to Disney World, but I'm not sure I could walk it even with the walker although I could stop and sit if I needed too. In fact, DS and I have decided to take our walkers to the park Sunday if we have the Father's Day gathering for Daddy because we are not confident walking on grass with our cane. We just don't want to take a chance of falling. I agree you should do whatever your DH wants to do on Father's Day as it is his day.

FBG was 125 this morning and weight was back down 3 lbs so drinking water yesterday helped get some of that water weight off. I didn't eat breakfast this morning but decided to drink coffee with the HWC and MCToil. BS reading by meal time was 101. I checked my bs about 2 1/2 hrs after dinner and bs was 130 which is pretty good for me. I don't think I am following any diet plan, but I do seem to be falling into just doing more of an IE/IF way of eat. If I am hungry I eat what I'm hungry for. If I'm not hungry for any particular thing or don't know what I want to eat then I figure I'm not really hungry so I won't eat anything.

I drank my 2 c of coffee this morning but not all at once. I spread it out over the morning. I did go back to using HWC because it doesn't spike my bs. If I'm fasting, I only have the coffee and water in the morning. I've been drinking lemon water after our meal. I also read that green tea is good for lowering bs so I decided to start drinking green tea as well as water in the evening. I think the liquid is helping curb appetite because I'm not having cravings at night. I just hope this will become a way of life for me. If not then maybe my hunger will be long fasts between meals so that I still won't be eating gobs of food.
