TMI ...constipation, of course

  • So I'm sure this has been brought up a few times but I'm new to all this...since going low carb I've been really having a lot of constipation...anyone else ? What do you do for it ?

    I had a couple of pces of sugar free candy and then I couldn't stay off of the toilet But I don't want to live that way either.

    Someone on another site suggested magnesium...I might be willing to try that since it might be a supplement I need anyway.

    I already cut out most of the cheese I was eating to see if that would help.

  • We need to have a sticky about what is constipation and what isn't.

    Question is - when you need to go poo, do you have to strain? or does it happen normally, just not as frequently?

    If you need to strain, then it's constipation. If you poo without straining, just less frequently, this is NOT constipation and is normal.

    When I eat a high carb diet, I need to poo every day. WHen I eat a high fat, low carb diet, I usually only have to go every 2-3 days or so and NO STRAINING.

    People just have this notion in their head they need to "go" every day. It's not true.

  • No, I'm straining pretty badly and it's uncomfortable...I could handle going less frequently if that's all it was.

  • Dr. Atkins recommended psyllium husk for constipation. You may want to try that. Its natural, no chemicals. There is also an over the counter tea called Smooth Move that should help with this issue. You can probably find it at CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid etc.

  • when eating low carb, make sure you're eating enough fat. For serious. People all over these forums have talked about eating McDonalds to do the trick. Consider applying it in a healthier way - drizzle olive oil on some roast veggies... avocado...

  • I take 2 teaspoons twice a day of Natural Calm Natural Vitality (I take it as a magnesium citrate intake) dissolved in a cup of boiling water and this stuff makes the bowels move.

  • Satine.. you can always drink more water too and try alittle fiber. I take tablets.. but you can mix fiber with your eggs.. etc Don't want you hurting!!!!

    I second the Miracle Calm. If you can't find it nearby then you can take 250 -500mg of Magnesium citrate at bedtime. That should help.

  • I've heard mint tea is also really good to help get things moving. Haven't tried it myself, but worth a shot especially if you already enjoy it!
