Calories burned walking...this can't be right!

  • So it's a beautiful day here in Saskatoon and, having one of the most beautiful and greenest cities in Canada, my fiance and I spent our entire afternoon walking. We started at 3pm, walked to a cafe for sandwiches and then took a walk along the river and then around our downtown core doing some window shopping. We got home around 7 and I sat down to log our miles. According to google maps, we walked a total of 7.5 miles.

I went to a few online calorie counters to see how much it translates to in burned calories. I was expecting 300 or 400...but most calculators are telling me anything between 750 to 1000!! This can't be right, can it?
  • Actually you'd be surprised how many calories walking can actually burn. I just did a short walk because it is so beautiful (and I was tired of reading chapters in my textbook). I walked for 38 minutes and went 2.58 miles, I burned 195 calories. My friend and I do long walks together sometimes, averaging about 6 miles or so in roughly an hour and a half for time and I usually burn around 450 calories. So, yes chances are it is correct! Enjoy those easy calorie burns, I know I do!
  • When I run/walk, according to my Garmin which I wear, I burned 320 calories in 50 minutes the other day... So I'd say, your 750 to 1000 cals. in 4 hours is about right, give or take a few calories...
