What kind of Bean?

  • I see there was another thread on Bean's but I didn't want to hijack it with another question :P
I am not a bean person at all, I will only ever eat the baked beans from the can and I know they are not the best for you. I really need to incorporate more fiber in my diet.
What bean do you recommend I try first? I HATE kidney beans, I think it is because of the texture (hard outside, soft inside).
    Thanks!
  • Garbanzo (chick peas) beans are very good! Do you like hummus? Or you can put them on salad, they almost have a nutty taste. What about salsa with some black beans on chicken? Just a few thoughts on good tasting beans if your not a fan
  • I know you say you hate kidney beans but have you ever tried it in a sloppy joe? I use the canned ones and they are not hard at all. I make my sloppy joes with ground turkey and the beans and they are absolutely delicious!
  • Never actually tried hummus, been to afraid, haha. I will defiantly look into the chick peas.
Ya, Kidney bean in the can I still cant eat . But thank you for the suggestion!!
  • I just looked it up and you can make the sloppy joes with black beans and chili beans.
  • Black beans, pinto beans, chick peas, are soo good!

How can you be afraid to try hummus? OMG girl you are missing out!

I recommend not buying canned beans though- full of sodium, you can buy bags of beans for DIRT cheap and then soak overnight and cook
  • If I just wanted a side of bean, what would you normally season them with? salt, pepper, garlic?
Yup, never tried hummus, guessing I should try it now .
  • I love lentils & they make a great soup too!
Also black beans, think southwestern salad...lettuce, chicken, black beans, corn, salsa & sour cream. Yums!
Pinto beans, I make turkey chili with pinto beans & black beans.

Black eye peas, butter beans, lima beans...
  • Try beans in a soup (lentil or split pea), a chili recipe (black beans would work), hummus, or roasted chickpeas.

It may be more palatable if it's a texture issue for you.
  • I've made black bean soup before- very good and easy! I like making southwestern salsa with black beans, corn, lime juice, jalapenos, onions, tomatoes and cilantro. I also like hummus, especially if it's spicy hummus- I put in diced jalapeno peppers and a little bit of habanero sauce. Great with veggies!

I also use lentils in tomato pasta dishes to stretch it out and give it more texture.

Definitely second buying dry instead of canned- cheaper and a little goes a long way! 1 cup dry makes about 3 cups cooked. Even if you forget to soak overnight, there is a quick soak method and it'll be ready to cook in about 1-2 hours instead of waiting overnight. GL and don't be afraid to try new things.
  • Just simply made you can toss some beans in with some water and whatever seasoning you want. I like to put in a little salsa and chicken stock with my black beans yum!

Refried beans are pretty much the only beans I buy in a can.
  • Canned beans, even canned baked beans and refried beans (and canned foods in general) get a worse rap than they deserve. Yes, some contain added ingredients that you don't want, but if you read labels there are many that are quite good, made with healthy ingredients.

Dried beans are the most economical, and are easy to make on the stovetop or in the crockpot.

My recommendation for your first bean to try would depend on whether you were planning to buy canned, dry, or fresh (probably not fresh because you can almost never find them, but when you can edamame or lima beans would be my choice).

For canned beans, my recommendation would be cannelini beans, black beans or pink beans (not pink kidney beans. Pink beans are smaller than kidney beans and look like navy beans only they're pink).

For dry beans, I would recommend almost any of them. I initially didn't like chickpeas, because from the can I thought they had a chalky, dry texture. But when I tried them from dry, I was hooked. The texture was still drier than most beans, but something about the taste and texture got me hooked and I even like canned chick peas now (though not as much as chickpeas cooked from dry).
  • Oh Lima beans and edamame you can get frozen also- YUM! Definitely the best bet
  • Roasted garbanzos (chickpeas) has been mentioned before on the forums. Just tried them for the first time this weekend- oh my - what a treat! Just drain and blot off a can of them, toss with a bit of olive oil and seasoning of your choice and bake at 400 for about half an hour. Move them around once in a while as the edges get dark first. Let them rest a few minutes to finish crisping and to cool off. I was greedy and burnt my tongue!
  • I have the same problem. I love green beans, but other than that, I HATE beans with a passion; My solution is -- don't eat them. LoL. Find another food with fibre, or find a supplement, or eat a fiber one bar. By all means, try the recipes if you're interested, but don't torment yourself too much. I learned that if you force yourself to eat something you HATE, you'll have more of a chance to mess up & quit.
