  • I'm one of those people who goes grocery shopping but doesn't want to cook when I get home. My mother is the same way so obviously that's where I picked up this little habit :-)

Today I went to the store to pick up a few things and I knew my family would be hungry when I got home. So what did I do? Headed to McDonalds. I was sitting in line at the drive thru thinking about the changes I want this year for myself and my family and I actually drove away instead of ordering food!!!

And guess what? No one starved before I was finished cooking a much healthier meal than anything I could have ordered. A great way to start the new year!
  • YAY! good for you It's those little things that add up to a big, huge change.
  • That's TOTALLY empowering.

How do idid your positive action make you feel?

I've done that and after the initial twinge of deprivation I felt exhilerated.
  • Way to go!
YAY! That is amazing! I'm going to work hard on doing the same!!!
  • Thanks for the support guys. It was a great feeling Dixc Chix. I, like most wives and moms, put everyone else before myself. I've recently started back to school and I'm learning that doing things for me are important if I want to be able to do for anyone else. I am lucky to have a husband and kids who aren't picky and will eat whatever I cook and I want to cook more often and cook healthier for all of us. I know this was just one of the many choices I'll have to make on this journey. I'm glad I made the right choice this time.
  • Thank you for your post! That is so motivating. I hope you have a wonderful successful new year!!
  • I do the same thing, but it has to change. I am trying to find fast, easy things that can be thrown together quickly so passing the drive-thru is easier to do. I think after a few weeks or so it should become second nature to cook every meal...or at least that is what I am hoping!
  • That is great! One solid step in the right direction of new habits (and not an easy thing to do, driving away!).
  • Good for you! Good job!
  • that's SO awesome! doing it ONCE makes it easier to do it over and over again! And you're so right - no one's going to starve if you take a few extra minutes to prepare something.

I keep a ton of stuff in my freezer for just such times - i hate cooking after coming home late, so it's a nice comfy feeling knowing there's something 5 minutes away!

    great job !
  • I've been there so many times. Kudos on doing the best thing for you and your family! We get so tired and then we tend to make bad choices with food. I'm going to try to prep food in advance in the hopes that I can stop eating out after a long day at work. You should be so proud!
  • Good job. Each time you can do that, it WILL get easier, I promise! Even on my "pig out" holiday vacation, I didn't want fast food...it just doesn't taste that great after eating good, nutritious healthy food. I can probably count on one hand the number of times I've eaten drive through since I started eating well in February. When I need something in a hurry and dojn' want to cook, I've gone to Subway a few times, but not the greasy burger and fries places.

Just a thought for you, too. Get your family involved with cooking. Even little kids can help with food prep and menu planning. It will help them to make good choices when they are grown, plus make it easier on you when time is short. Maybe cook some things ahead and put them in the freezer so you could phone home and have them get dinner started from food that is already prepped or whatever will help get it on the table quicker.

Congrats on making the right choice for a healthier lifestyle.

  • This is so awesome! I did this last week. I felt like someone had just handed me my life back.

Great job. We just need to keep at it!
  • That is great!
  • BunnyD, food prep in advance is going to be key for me. My company started a wellness program last year and that is one of the things the nutritionist has stressed to us. I bought a large pack of boneless skinless chicken breast today and I plan on cooking that and other stuff tomorrow so I won't have to start from scratch every day. I've done this before and then got out of the habit. I hope it sticks this time because it sure does make my life easier.
