Best low carb/calorie/fat bread??

  • Right now I eat MAYBE 2 slices of whole wheat bread a day. Its stromans I think?

    Does anyone have any suggestions for a lower carb/calorie/fat bread? What kind of bread do you eat?

  • I am counting calories but I recently bought Trader Joe's low carb tortillas because the calories are low (50) and they taste good.

    One of my favorite breads is "The Baker" bread which is local to the east coast and is about 50 calories per slice. I also like Ezekiel sprouted grain breads or the Trader Joe's knockoffs which range in calories but are around 80 calories per slice.

  • Sara Lee Delightful Whole Wheat bread is what I eat - it is made with the whole grain and is only 45 calories per slice.

    Edited to add: Oops, you asked about carbs & fat as well. There are 9g carbs in a slice and .5g (just a half gram!) of fat.

    I haven't eaten bread of any kind in over 5 years....but....my Dad (insulin dependant diabetic) eats Arnold Bakery Light 100% Whole Wheat Bread. Its 40 calories per slice, has 12 net carbs per 2 slices and 0.5 grams fat per 2 slices.

  • I wish we had Arnolds Bakery bread around here! One thing I would do, though, is take all of the suggestions and then look at how thick/big the slices are. There may be some big differences there - I have noticed that one trick some companies use is they just slice it really thin, or else the bread is cut a decent thickness but is very airy. Then they slap low calorie on it! Not a lot of bang for the calorie buck when they do that!
  • I like the Orowheat Sandwich Thins for 100 calories. I also like Flatout Flatbread for 90 calories (light variety). For tortillas I like La Tortilla Factory for 50 calories. Actually though, I rarely eat any of these anymore. They are here though.

    I really like Ezekiel sprouted grain bread. I think nutritionally it offers more bang for my buck for 80 calories. It goes bad VERY quickly so it must be kept in my freezer. I toast it so it's okay.
  • I really like the Oroweat Sandwich Thins (which I think are sold as Arnold's Sandwich Thins in the midwest and east coast). I also like Trader Joe's Fat Free multigrain bread, but it is a little higher in calories--70 per slice (and it isn't whole wheat).

    I also like to sometimes use English muffins, either Thomas's light or Oroweat Double Fiber for bread. Both make great hamburger buns and are around 100 calories each.
  • I don't eat much bread but it is a treat to have Orowheat sandwich thins.
    I also enjoy Western Bagel's The Perfect 10 bagel. I order them online and freeze them. Check out this site for nutritional content

  • We use the FlatOut Multi Grain wraps here. They make excellent pizzas and sandwiches.
  • I'm a bread fanatic! It is my weekness I think if I could give it up the pounds would melt away, but I haven't and I doubt I could. So I try to shop smarter and the best thing I have found so far is the Sarah lee bread metioned above me. Low calories and from what I can tell its made with natural ingredients and no artificial sweeteners
  • I like Mama Lupe's low-carb tortillas with only 3 grams net carbs. To me they taste just like regular tortillas. I like to fill one with chicken strips and avocado, yummy.
  • I don't have any local stores that carry any kind of decent much less low carb bread so I order mine from Sami's Bakery in FL, OMG the cinnamon raisin 7 grain is delish, it isn't sliced too thick & is terrific as french toast, they also carry reg. 7 grain fiber bread & rolls, they ship priority, I order several at a time, keep the rest in the freezer. They are 2 & 3 carbs per slice.
  • I've never really been satisfied with the "light" breads because as someone mentioned before it's usually that the slices are smaller and very thin but it's pretty much the same bread. The truly "diet" breads are generally pretty flavorless so I don't really like any of them.

    I buy Vermont Bread Company Soft 12 Grain because it has zero processed grains, no chemical additives or preservatives, no HFCS or sugar (it does have honey), it's all natural and I feel good about eating it. Plus it is the best tasting sliced bread in my opinion, yum! They have a regular 12 Grain but I find that the Soft 12 Grain is preferable. It has 80 calories per slice.

    Usually what I do is only have one slice of bread where I would have had two in the past. I make egg "sandwiches" in the morning a lot with just 1 slice of bread open-faced and I also make my regular (deli) sandwiches with just one slice of bread on the bottom and the lettuce acts as the "top."
