Halt

  • From my friends in AA, I learned about the acronym HALT... and while I apply it in my life to alcohol, it also applies to food.

The thought is never let yourself get too

    H - hungry
    A - angry
    L - lonely
    T - tired

I find this is helpful for me.

Anyone else use this or hear of this?
  • You bet!The too tired one is a big one for me and I have to really watch that.

    Thanks for the reminder,

  • good tips.
  • I came back to afirm that I'm just really tired and I'm not hungry. I've already eaten my supper and it was enough.

Thanks for this today you don't know how much it has helped me.

  • Yay! I'm glad it helped!

  • Thanks for the reminder, Faith! Yep, this is a good one for sure.

It's funny how getting "too" (hungry, angry, lonely or tired) can trigger a binge. This is a good one to keep in our arsenal.
  • I added thirsty to tired because sometimes I find if I drink water my cravings will go away and realize I was just thirsty.
  • Thanks for reminder about HALT (and thirsty.) Sometimes I think I'm hungry, then try to come up with a food explanation.Example:I didn't have enough (fill in the blank) at dinner, so maybe I really do need to eat something extra right now. When I make a phone call and tell another OA, that compulsive feeling goes away. Why? because I'm no longer isolating and lonely.
  • Thanks to those who posted about the online/telephone meetings...i never knew you didn't have to start by walking in somewhere. I have been to 2 telephone meetings and have ordered the books.. I have never seen myself so clearly with all my faults and problems as when I was listening to the meeting. I thank you all so much.. I'm not sure where I saw the post but I am sure I love the support here.
  • I forgot this one last night and I was exhausted and fed it. Today I will try to remember this one and not feed it.

  • Great acronym. I'm going to add that to my arsenal. Thanks.
  • that is good! and the thirsty part... I think I'll keep that in mind. HALTT. Do not let myself get Too Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired or Thirsty and I will prevent both alcohol & food binges!

I'm trying to cut out the alcohol, because I never workout when I drink and it makes me feel bloated and is way too many empty calories! But when the weekend rolls around and I hang out with my friends I always give in. And then my workouts are thrown off and I go back to my slacker self. So this is really good, it will help me in both aspects.
