  • Okay, I thought everyone was NUTS raving about greek yogurt. I had gone and bought a container of Fage and it was expensive. And it was HORRID. Sour, runny, nothing like the "rich creamy dessert" everyone talks about. I figured.. whatever, they are all nuts.

Well I read in a magazine that OIKOS brand greek yogurt won the taste test. I saw it in Walmart today for $1.26 for a little 5oz container. I bought it (0% fat, honey on the bottom).

OH. MY. GOODNESS. It is HEAVEN. It is really really thick and creamy like... like maybe totally thick full fat sour cream. And not at all sour. It is thick like frosting!! I wolfed it down, 120 calories. Now I am quite sure there was something wrong with the first one I got that was yucky.

So now, what do you do with this stuff? Besides just eat it plain. Do you use it on things or in things? I was thinking of mixing cocoa into it and see if it was good... anyone tried that? Tell me how you like to use your greek yogurt. I am a convert!
  • I actually don't like it plain I love the texture, though.

I mix in honey or agave nectar.
  • Ohh, I've never tried Greek yogurt. This sounds really exciting! Thanks Lyn for the question, and always Faerie for being so on top of things! !
  • I can't handle the 0% Fage, but the 1% is awesome with a bit of agave nectar. Yum yum!
  • I love the Fage 5%!! I usually add some frozen blueberries, a splash of DaVinci's hazelnut, caramel or english toffee syrup, a sprinkle of cinnamon and some toasted slivered almonds on top.....mmmmmmmm!!!!
  • What exactly is agave nectar?

I usually buy my supply at Trader Joe's.
  • I get Trader Joe's brand of Greek yogurt and I put agave and frozen blueberries in mine. All from TJ's. I LOVE Greek yogurt! It is so creamy and way better than normal yogurt! I sometimes put pecans in it also.
  • Lyn2007 - when you bought the Fage did you stir it? It says not to stir it or it will turn out goopy and runny. I pour the little bit of liquid off the top.

Anyhoo I usually just stir in a bit of honey or maple syrup. I like to add fruit to it sometimes (raspberries or bananas are my favorite) and I use the unsweetened "sour" kind in place of sour cream as a topping.
  • Try this website. It has number of different recipes using greek yogurt:

  • I put Greek yogurt on a meringue nest (55 cals, 0g fat) and add fresh berries; blackberries and blueberries are my favourite but also strawberries and raspberries when these are in season. Hey presto, a lovely dessert for 200 cals.

  • DH says that he has made some cucumber salad with it to top burgers with. Here are some more recipes:

  • I eat the 2% - it is much better than the 0%, IMHO.
I just had some today for brekkie!

My favorite is to chop up strawberries and add it to the plain yogurt. Stir in a tsp of honey and top with a lowfat granola. There is an organic hemp granola my store carries that is light and crispy and this is what I use. It's my favorite breakfast!!
  • Well, Lynn, I smear it all over my body and...
Sorry, couldn't resist. Actually it would probably make a great beauty treatment.
BTW, I like the Fage brand, also the Oikos, and Trader Joe's has their own brand which is very good. I don't mind the 0%. There's always tsatsiki. But my favorite is after dinner, with some slivered almonds and agave nectar drizzled over. Oh, so yummy...
  • I have only been able to find ONE store that has any kind of greek yogart. It is greek gods, and I buy the already mixed together honey kind and pominganite. Good stuff, but I sure wish the other stores around here carried some.
