BBQ Sauce

  • Mmk, so I'm craving the heck out of some good old barbecue chicken. I've looked everywhere for no sugar, or low carb bbq sauce...to no avail.

Anybody know of any? I'm also not a huge fan of high fructose corn syrup and avoid it like the plaque. It seems like most commercial bbq sauces that are on the shelves in the [many] grocery stores that I checked are super HFCS laden.

I know that SB cookbook has a recipe. Is it any good? I'm craving that smoky sweet taste.
  • zeffryn, have you tried the recipe for Cola Chicken in the Phase 1 entrees? It tastes just like BBQ sauce, and it's also good on pork chops or whatever else you enjoy BBQ sauce on. Here's a link to the recipe -

  • That sounds awesome. I will try that this week. Thanks!

I tried the fauxtatoes this past week and everybody loved them. I added some roasted garlic, and it took my husband a while to figure out that they weren't potatoes.
  • Low Cal. Masterpiece BBQ!!
I just happen across this BBQ sauce. KC Masterpiece Low Cal Classic Blend at Walmart.

2 TBSP 10 cal; no fat; 2 total Carbs; no sugar; no protein. I find it a little on the sour side so I just add a little splenda to it.

If anyone has a homemade recipe that is low sugar, I would appreciate it if you would share.
  • I googled sugar free bbq sauce recipes and didn't come up with much. There were some that called for the addition of Diet Cola. Those aren't necessarily phase 1 friendly. I checked the South Beach cookbook, and it looked great. Not too many ingredients. I made it and it tastes pretty good, not exactly like regular bbq sauce, so I might add a little liquid smoke.

Here is the recipe in case anybody else is interested:

    # 1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
    # 2 tablespoons white vinegar (possibly sub. apple cider vinegar if phase 1 friendly?)
    # 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
    # 1 teaspoon mustard powder
    # 2 teaspoons chopped parsley
    # 1/4 teaspoon salt
    # 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
    # 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder

It has a really nice, fresh flavor. It should be great on grilled chicken. I'll let you know how it goes. Even hubs likes it
  • Nanj-
I am going to look for the bbq sauce that you mentioned at Walmart. I know that Kraft makes a South Beach brand BBQ sauce as well, I haven't seen it lately though.

    Thanks for the mention!
  • I make the one I posted in the recipe section here:
    http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=134310

I just found recipes online for bbq sauce and replaced any sugar it asked for with Splenda. I've also added some sugar free maple syrup to it in place of some of the sugar/Splenda if you like a mapley kinda taste.

I've used this recipe on baked chicken and on turkey burgers; I really like it.
  • omg. It was so good. It was definitely reminiscent of real bbq sauce and was definitely more fresh tasting. The grill added that great smoky element as well.

For dinner tonight, I'm making SB vegetarian lasagna.
