Snack advice please....

  • I am not donig SBD but DH wants to try it again. He has some limitations on snacks though. He can't eat peanuts or any nuts because of his teeth and he doesn't like cheese. It's been so long since I read the book (which I will do again tonight) can you give me some ideas for snacks for him that might work so he can be successful? This teeth problem is new from before when he did SBD.

    I appreciate anything you can help or suggest. TIA
  • I like hard boiled eggs, rolled up slices of turkey breast of other lean deli meats. What about peanut butter or hummus on celery?
  • Here are some of my favorite snacks:
    skim milk with nsa hot chocolate mix, a latte, or just a glass of skim milk
    greek yogurt with agave nectar
    a cup of vegetable soup
    hard boiled egg or deviled egg, tuna or egg salad rolled up in a lettuce leaf
    Laughing cow lite cheese or natural peanut butter spread on celery, reduced fat triscuits, or an apple
    cottage cheese with chopped tomatoes and cucumber, salt and pepper

  • Laughing Cow Light and celery is a fave (already mentioned), or a string cheese, or a BonBel Light cheese w/ triscuits, or if he's P2, he could have a Dannon Light and Fit Carb Control yogurt with a small handful of berries.

    Assuming the teeth thing is an inability to eat crunchy items? How about pistacios? They are a softer nut... or maybe shelled sunflower seeds? Good luck.
  • I find it hard to have protein with the snacks all the time. I also don't eat cheese. I often have yogurt or fruit. Another thing I do is I save off a small portion of a meal and eat it later. I like cheese but it's a trigger food for me. One other snack I like is either sardines, kippers, marinated herring or smoked fish of some kind. The marinated herring is nice if you can find one without sugar in it. It has bite size pieces and two make a nice snack on some tomatoe or lettuce. There isn't a thing wrong with using a 2 oz slice of meat either. The one downside is that kind of fish is loaded with sodium. If you cook enough for a meal and snack it saves a lot of time. Another time saver is making a large roast ( turkey) and nibbling off it.
  • I have found that preparing portion size snacks ahead of time, encourages me to snack. A habit I was trying to break when changing to the SBD way of living was not eating breakfast or lunch and then a very large dinner. I like food and eating, but it was never a priority. Two snacks a day has been a challenge for me.

    * You could bag cherry or grape tomatoes in snack plastic bags.
    * Make roll ups of avocado slices, sandwich meat(turkey, ham, roast beef), and a pickle quarter wrapped in a large leaf of lettuce.
    * Deviled eggs are awesome. My husband loved to open the fridge and grab one up.
    * Any phase 1 shakes. My husband likes to freeze them in batches, and then set a few in the fridge to thaw out overnight for the next day. Think chocolate with peanut butter, or any of the creamy shakes that are made from sugar free gelatin, cottage cheese, and milk and ice. I would have died before SB before I would eat cottage cheese, but I actually have grown to like it in shakes.
    * Not traditionally considered a snack, but I love making small salads like a side salad from Chick-fi-la and I just munch down on one of those with some sandwich meat for added protein.
    * V8 and a boiled egg is great.
    * Making some SB friendly soups and putting them in a blender and making them smooth like a Lipton's "drinkable" soups. We put them in the coffee thermal cups and just heat them up and "drink" them on the run for lunch or a snack.
  • I am so boring the way I eat....
    it's the same day in and day out. I still haven't made any of the recipes yet and I have saved a ton of them! I think tomorrow morning, since it's a Saturday, I am going to finally make that protein pancake every one is raving about!

    Mine are simple: (pick one)

    reduced fat cheeses

    6 oz of V-8 juice

    2 TB natural peanut butter

    1 cup of hot sf flavored instant de-caf coffee
    (current favorite is Suisse Mocha---tastes like strong cocoa)

    I am still eating the eggs for breakfast (I told you I was boring) so I try not to eat them any other time of the day.

    I rotate these above and it has worked for me fine.

    After my evening meal, I have a sf jello cup, sometimes with sf cool whip, as my dessert.

    P.S. (since there are 30 calories per cup in the instant flavored coffee, I count that towards my 75 calories of "Sweet Treat" for the day)
