Pomegranates?

Hey all!
So I was doing my lazy-day-off-afternoon tv viewing and Oprah had a nice lil special about proper foods. At the end of the show, the doctor on mentioned the benefits of pomegranates. Pom's have been one of my fav fruits since childhood and well part of my favorite story as a child (the story of Persephone, that is.).

Anyways, are pomegranates ok on SBD? I checked the GFGC mini bible and of course they're not listed. They are a more bitter kind of fruit which makes me suspect they may be ok and would be similar to berries.

Thanks! :)

How do you prepare pomegranates?

Hi,
Sorry I have never had one so I do not know what to do with it. What do they taste like?
Thanks
Sheridan

Pomegranates are a kind of odd fruit. You pick it apart and eat the flesh encapsulating the seeds, which are about the size of a small peanut. I eat them raw. However, you can juice them (which there are products like Pom - a brand of pomegranate juice), or make jams/jellies with them. Some people also use them as salad additions.

Here is a link from the CDC about pomegranates:
http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/5ada...omegranate.htm

And a link from Purdue which has slightly conflicting nutrional info:

After looking at it, I think they may be on the semi-no no list since of the higher sugar content. Although I am still learning on how to determine what is ok and what is not when it comes to fruits.

Hi Tropical Kitty.. I loved them as a child too.. We called them "Chinese Apples" I too looked high and low for info.. I was leaning toward them being considered as a "limited" fruit because it has 17 grams of sugar and 3 fiber.. and by the SB guide it looks like 13 is the cut off mark...but then, looking at watermelon with 10 grams - it's a fruit to AVOID... go figure.. I looked for info on GI load too.. no luck  I would eat them and see if they trigger a sugar need.. if it doesnt, me personally, I'd eat Poms. Wish I could find more helpful info for ya.

Thanks for the help Schatzi. I'll try em in a couple weeks and see how it goes. Of course I'll report back! :)
