Default Bagel is Sick (he's a dog)

but he's my baby.

in 2002 I got him from a shelter. he was about 80 pounds then and they told me he was 2. he's part newf Part something so he's a newfandstuff.

he's about 110 pounds now and he's sick. he has battled lyme disease this summer and now he can't walk or stand. even with help.

he's at the vet but it does not look good.

Aside from the lyme disease his knees are arthritic and now he had a herniated disc in his neck.

the option for a dog neurologist, dog MRI and dog surgery is not really an option due to funding issues.

so we are trying steroids for a few days to see if it helps. IF it helps he can come home. IF he can't stand or walk (and he has to be able to do steps) by thursday then he's going to be going to the Bridge on Friday.

Those of us that love our animals please have good thoughts for my boy.

I can't get to my photobucket album here at work to post pictures of him but the album name is ladybugnessa if anyone wants to go see him. the yellow dog with him is my girl dog Hannah. she's lost without him and crying running around the house looking for him.

Nessa - I'm so sorry to hear about your baby. You've given him 6 good years and you are doing all you can for him. I know the life expectancy of larger dogs is shorter compared to smaller dogs so I would definitely say he is experiencing old age and I know how hard that is to see as a parent. Best of luck to you and your family.

Oh, Nessa, what heartbreaking news. Please take extra care of yourself and Hannah. Hope and supportive care plus prednisone is a wonderful thing- I have seen some miracles happen as a vet. Sometimes, though, the only miracle left is the gift of a gentle passing surrounded by the love of your family. Please know what a treasure Bagel has had in his life with you, and I will send all of my best wishes your way.

Oh dear! I'm sending every ounce of positive thoughts and prayers I have in me out to you and Bagel!

I know how hard a decision it can be not to go off the deep end in debt to have surgery to extend the life of a beloved furkid. I sure hope the steroids work for him!

went to see him.
he's mad now.
he gave me THE LOOK

there is a sign on his cage that says "MUZZLE when working near mouth" seems he bit a tech or two today.
they told me he's having a grumpy day.... poor guy.

I went in and sat with him. I pet him. he head butt me a bit (to pet more) but no kisses and no tail wagging. He's peeing again (on the bedding) but they change him when he's wet.

the good news... maybe... he did GET UP ON HIS OWN.... more than he could do on Saturday and Sunday..... so MAYBE it will work.

if he does not improve more however I can't see making him suffer like this.

You know I'm thinking of you and Bagel today. It sounds like the steroids are working and he is getting back his Bagelishness!
