S/C/G: Baby on board

Height: 5' 6" on a good day

Default How many calories did you eat while breastfeeding?

Like the last two pregnancies, I put on too much weight and will likely be the same weight post partum (weird, 3 different pregnacies, 3 different levels of activity, 3 different eating habits...all got to the same weight...)

Anyway I will be breastfeeding and I'm already thinkin about my calories for weight loss after baby. After baby #1, I didn't BF and just did 1200-1500 cal right away. After baby #2 I didn't count cals at all while breast feeding (4 months) and didn't lose a pound either! I noticed I was ALWAYS hungry so that's why I chose not to count cals, but that meant no weight loss too.

I want to start right away, but not be starving or reduce mill suplly either.

Just want input and other mom's experience.

If you BF, what was your daily calories? Did you notice you were very hungry? Was it hard to "control" eating while BFing? What was your weight PP? I seem to be about 220 lbs PP after each baby. I'm actually 220 now, but I have a month to go then of course some comes off with having the baby!

I was the same way: 3 different pregnancies, 3 different eating/exercise styles, same weight (give or take) every time.

By about 39 weeks I tend to weigh 150 lbs or so (I am very short). I have never weighed myself immediately post-partum, so I am not sure how much I weigh after having the baby.

I have breastfed my other two kids and plan to breastfeed this one.

I did not count calories with either kid. Nor did I focus on weight loss until I was about 6 months pp. With kid #1, I was still hanging onto an extra 5 lbs of baby weight at the 2 year mark (when I got preggers with #2). With #2, the weight flew off and I was down to a good weight by the time she was 18 months or so.

I admit that I wasn't very diligent about trying to lose the weight. I was content for it to come off slowly. I had so much going on with babies and life, that I just didn't care enough to work very hard at my weight.

This time is different, though. I intend to work my butt off to lose the weight by Christmas.

The whole "breastfeeding will melt the weight off" was just a myth for me. I didn't lose an oz till my child was almost 2 and I didnt care about milk supply by then. My milk was always good, but I was hungry and extremely thirsty the whole time. I'm not sure how many calories I was eating, but I didn't gain or lose weight during those 2 years.

I guess this time around it will have to be a trial and error type of thing. I will count calories, maybe starting at 2000 (I lose weight at 1600 with exercise) and see how the milk and the scale does for me.

Before I got pregnant I was 207. At 41 weeks I was 237. Came home from the hospital weighing 228. I'm almost 8 weeks pp and have just got back to 207 but of course my body is different now and nothing fits. I'm exclusively pumping and not really counting calories but I'd say I eat around 1800 a day. I have no idea if pumping has helped me lose the weight. I want to continue to lose so my clothes will fit right again.

I'm 3.5 months pp and just started counting calories again about a week ago. I was 208 at 41 weeks, came home from the hospital at 205 (seriously...I had a 9 lb baby...how does that happen??), and was hanging out at 188-189ish since about 6 weeks pp. I've lost down to 186.4 as of this morning. 7.5 more lbs til I hit my pre pregnancy weight, then I have a good 30-40 more to lose. This week I've been eating at least 2000 calories each day and more on the days I exercise. So far, so good!

I don't count calories, so I have no idea. I just eat when hungry and stop when satisfied. My LO is 4.5 months old now and I seem to need 3-4 small meals a day. When she was younger it was 6-8 meals a day. My supply is fine and I'm losing pretty easily so I'm happy.

I started cc-ing 3 months pp, and I was around 180-190 pounds. At that point my intake was 1850 c/d and the pounds seemed to be melting off, though I will caution you my supply did markedly decrease (though I did have enough to exclusively bf ds). Hunger was a little bit of an issue at first, but then I started eating more of the right things and got used to it.

Oddly enough, I'm struggling much more now with hunger and staying in my calorie range, though DS is one whole year old! We still nurse, but only as a supplement/comfort/nap time thing. I try to keep my calories between 1500-2000/day, but more often than not it's an all out battle!

Good luck!

Thank you everyone! I have decided to set my calories at 1900, and if I am very hungry to increase it from there. My plan is too BF on demand for the first mont to month and a half, then switch to night time only. I remember with DS I had an over supply by six weeks and alrady had a supply in the freezer at that point too. I pumped, but because I could not pump much at work my supply got less and less during the day. Until I basically dried up during the day. So I will be doing that on purpose this time instead of on accident.

I google BFing and weight loss a lot and I read so many women that say they couldn't lose any weight while BFing but they all say they "ate healthy" and we all know that unless someone is calorie counting their version of eating healthy might still be too many cals and that would explain their inability to lose weight. Thats why I posted here. I haven't hear someone say they counted cals and still couldn't lose. I have heard fo not losing that last 5 pounds, but I'm really talking about the bulk of the weight. I gained a lot, again with this pregnancy and my goal is to get most of it off in one year, I hope, but at least be light end to be running again by the spring.

It's normal to be hungry after breastfeeding, so don't panic. Try not to think about your weight, just be happy as you're becoming mother again. Have fun and go out with your husband wearing maternity evening dresses.
