I also wanted to add that there is some weight gain during pregnancy that has nothing to do with fat or the weight of the actual baby, that will disappear a few weeks after the birth-your body has extra blood volume during pregnancy, the weight of the amniotic fluid and placenta, the weight of the enlarged uterus (that goes from the size of a lime to a watermelon during gestation), and a pound or two extra in your breasts as well. These things should also be taken into consideration.

When do you start to worry about weight loss during pregnancy? I'm so worried there's more than one in there but I keep loosing weight. I have an appointment with my midwife on the 26th and so far today I've been (finally) able to eat probably twice as much as I have the rest of the week. I just hope this continues *runs and knocks on all the wood in the house*

Megan, your midwife can give you a better answer than anyone here. I can say, from my experience, you shouldn't worry about weight loss 1) during the 1st trimester and 2) if it's gradual.

If you're experiencing "unexpected and rapid" weight loss, then you need to move from a midwife to an OB for a diagnosis. But, if you're suffering from "morning" sickness, it's to be expected that you'll lose weight. I lose almost 10 pounds in my first trimester, just because I couldn't keep anything down. I'm losing some what I gained now, in my third, because I can't eat anything without getting the worst heartburn of my life. Focus on eating what you can, when you can.

MeganBeth-

Your stats show that you are currently 10 weeks along-is there a particular reason why you are worrying about a multiple birth? This is something really that won't be able to be known for sure until the midwife or OB hears multiple heartbeats, or it is confirmed on an ultrasound. Were your levels during your bloodwork high or something making you believe that you might be carrying multiples? Don't worry about something until you know it for certain...no need for unecessary worry.

With my first and third pregnancies I had severe morning sickness for about the first 10 weeks or so, and then it started to subside. If you lose a few pounds during that time, I wouldn't worry too much, but if it is excessive (like over 10 pounds, I would just ask my midwife or OB about it. If you are feeling it start to subside, then you are probably doing fine. My worry happens when at 18, 20, 24 weeks etc. that women aren't gaining any weight...and I worry that a weigh in thread might compel women to gain LESS weight because of the comparison factor. (SHE has only gained 8 pounds at 24 weeks, so I am going to aim to gain only 7...that sort of competitive thought process, when now is not the time for it.)

As far as the nausea, I found that it helped me to eat small snacks throughout the day, rather than large meals. When your blood sugar drops, you are more likely to get nausea.

Thanks ladies. I'm fairly certain my weightloss is due to the morning sickness, as of this am i had regained a couple pounds. Yesterday and today have been MUCH better and eating smaller meals has really helped. As well as dr. pepper for some reason. I had quit drinking all caffine but the moment i took a few sips of dr.p my stomach instantly settled. go figure

As for the multiple thing. When I was pg with DS they were about 75% sure he had a twin that didn't make it, they found scar tissue on my u/s and sent me to a specialist who was fairly certain there had been twins and what they thought was scar tissue was actually a "double sac". Oh and there are twins on both sides of my family and both sides of DH's. It would totally be just my luck too... I'm not sure I'd mind, but the thought of all that diaper laundry scares me

Week 21: 155 lbs

10 lb gain

Aphil - I agree and hope noone is trying to loose wieght. I was loosing weight before I got pregnant and have been worried about not gaining enough. So far, I am on track gaining a pound a week in the second trimester and I think posting here has helped. I have been eating a lot so I'm not sure how I haven't gone out of control. I do try to make healthy choices, whole grains, dairy, fruits, low sugar, etc. but I eat as much as I want. I think it is important not to fight the hunger during pregnancy but to eat nutritiously.
