Metformin

How long did it take for you to see results, if any? I was put on it this week, and I would like to have regular periods again and/or combined weigh loss coupled with exercise and a healthy diet.

I started taking Metformin at the end of October and saw my specialist again in January - by that point all my hormones were within the 'normal' range and ten days ago I had my first non-norethisterone driven period.... I was shocked.

I'm exercising regularly too.

I was lucky enough to have no side effects too.

Good luck with it :)

Personally I wasn't able to take it. Made me sooooo sick past the 2 week grace period. I never really saw results from it. I'm one of the rare ones that don't though.

I've been on it for a few years, so I don't remember exactly how long. BUT, I do remember that for the first time ever I could finally lose weight by eating less and working out. I would lose like 1 pound a month before metformin and now I can lose 1-2 pounds a week like normal people if I really give 100%.
But what really helped me was the metformin combined with weightloss as far as my period. I'm pretty regular now without using any hormones. :)

For me it stopped weight gain creep. No more creeping up and up first.

Later (and I cannot remember how long this took) it got my AWOL period to come every 60 days. That lasted a year and then I was pregnant.

I'm back on it now, so I don't know yet what it will be cycle wise. Normally I'm on BCP to help with moods/symptoms/regulate.

I just started taking Met ER two weeks ago (tomorrow). So far, no effect other than the side effects of nausea and dizziness. The nausea is gone now and I'm just left with feeling light headed most of the day. No change on blood sugar yet. I spotted briefly for a day after I started the Met ER.

I actually gained seven pounds the two days after I started taking it. The weight hung on for two days and then dropped off. After that, no gain or loss.

I started taking Metformin HCL 500mg per day in August 2011. I've been consistent with healthy diet and exercise, and a few weeks ago when I got my blood tested, my glucose levels were normal :)

Good luck!

I don't take Met anymore (I no longer need it, as my IR is in "remission"! YAY!) but when I was taking it, I found it took a month to really notice that I wasn't, like, ravenous all the time. I did suffer pretty badly from stomach issues the first month, though, which is probably why it took me so long to notice. *L*

It didn't make any difference to my periods, though. When I was originally diagnosed with PCOS in November of 2007, I was put on progesterone-only BCPs, and that regulated my cycle pretty much immediately. When I started the Met, my doctor pulled me off the BCPs to see if my period would gain regularity with the Met.

Didn't work. In the year that I was on Met and off the BCPs, I had exactly two periods. And my doctor kept me off the BCPs for a while even after I came off the Met, but still nothing. So in my case, the IR obviously was not what was causing the amenorrhea; it's probably due solely to my extremely low level of progesterone. It seems as though, without some synthetic form of progesterone, my body simply does not produce enough on its own to allow me to have a period. It sucks, but...eh. Could be worse.

Anyway, yeah. Metformin does work for many, many people, but in some cases, it doesn't. Hopefully it will work for you! :)

Ive been on metformin for a week and a bit now maybe two. I was wondering if anything else experience major lack of appetite. I dont get to sick from it any more. But i have noticed that i dont want food and if i do its very little. I had to choke down my lunch today because I knew that i should eat. Will this go away. I actually used to enjoy eating haha!

I'm three weeks into taking Met ER. It hasn't really done anything for my blood sugar levels yet, but I am seeing a little bit of redux on my appetite. Wish the effect was more profound because I have a lot to lose!

I'm tolerating it well now, so since it isn't really touching my blood sugar levels in the morning, I've doubled my dose tonight. I have an appointment with my doctor on Friday. I just have to allow for some time to find the right dosage. It's a pity that patience isn't a side effect!

Didn't take long for me either, started in October 2009, by February 2010 I had regular periods and perfect hormone balance and by February 2011 I was pregnant... Metformin worked wonders for me, it also helped me loose almost 80 lbs. It sucks that I can't take them due to nursing right now as my weight is a mess, but that's a different story x

Met helps regulate my cycles and helps me lose weight, sometimes I get the side effects, the headaches and the diarrhea specifically, I find that its helpful overall with my pcos symptoms

Metformin does lessen appetite because it helps to regulate blood sugar. I think that if you're not hungry you shouldn't eat, or at least don't eat as much. Maybe your eating patterns will change, but I doubt you'll lose your enjoyment of food, you'll just eat differently - which may be a good thing... ;)
