Default Diet plan for PCOS?

Hi Ladies,

I was diagnosed with Endometrial Hyperplasia in 2002 then was diagnosed with PCOS in 2006 along with borderline diabetes. Right away I was put on Metformin and was told I had to lose weight. Well in all the time I have managed to lose only 14 pounds. It was suggested that I have Bariatric surgery to help with the weight loss because nothing else has helped. I have been doing my research since 2007 and decided to go ahead and start the process. Well today I found out that my insurance doesn't cover it and I do t have the extra 15k laying around for the surgery. I am at my whits end with all this.
Do any of y'all know if there is a special PCOS diet?

I am exercising 4 times a week, eating 3 square meals a day, I am mostly eating clean and have cut out junk (chips, cakes, etc)

I lost well over 100 lbs just doing what you are doing. Eating lots of veggies, some fruit, limiting processed food, cutting out refined carbs and added sugar, etc. A low GL/GI diet is often recommended. South beach diet is the one I used as a guideline.

How many calories are you consuming?

I eat super healthy, whole foods, little (if any!) processed food, and I can't lose weight unless I keep track of my calories.

Hello---I have PCOS and have been overweight for a long time. I had the lap band surgery in 2008 and I was able to loose 40 lbs in 2 months. I became pregnant right away and after I had my daughter I did not watch my weight and it creeped back up. 2.5 months ago I finally went back to the doctor and got an adjustment and have been exercising and eating clean.
Even with the lap band the only "diet" that works for me is eating very little carbs. I only eat between 20-40 carbs a day because if not I won't loose a pound.

That is exactly what we have to do. We have to try to limit our carb intake, just as if we were diabetic, since insulin resistance is a main driver of PCOS.

All the research I've been doing shows that the quality of carb matters as well. Trying to limit refined carbs and processed sugars and choosing whole grains and natural sweetners and food, and pairing carbs with proten. If you have an apple, eat it with peanut butter or cheese for example.

That's basically the diet as far as I know: low-carb, lean proteins, fiber, fresh foods.

Oh..and exercise...

I was diagnosed with PCOS last week. I was told by my nutritionist to find an insulin resistant diet. Has anyone had any experience with this? Did it help? Thanks!

Yes. It helps!

Try reading "The PCOS Diet" or any book about PCOS really. They all talk about how to eat to live better.

pcosdiva.com is a good resource also. She has meal ideas and stuff too.

Low gi, whole foods. Not that it cannot also be done veg -- I have done it. But my tri's wack out if it gets too carby, and that's harder on a veg diet than not.

Def consider diabetic diet skills to help keep the Insulin resistance in check.

Hi!

I also have PCOS, I have had it for a few years now and it was controlled by BC but I put on a lot of weight and suddenly the BC wasn't cutting it anymore. I figured that if I lost weight, I could eventually get off the pill and I've been working out since about January. I'd go to the gym at least 5 days a week and I'd do an hour of cardio plus classes.

By September I had lost 8 pounds. I was shocked because I'd been working so hard. But I did some research and realized that it might be the PCOS. So I started South Beach, which is really recommended for women with PCOS. I started last week and am down 5.5 pounds so far. I'm so pleased! I will definitely be sticking to this one
