Hi Everyone,

Rennie My wt has been up n down a LOT. I hear ya re having to deal with the containers & prep. Part of me rebels against this constantly, yet I have demonstrated so many times that I don't make the best choices when I'm not prepared. It's worth it! Great that you have support at work--that was a major key to me staying OP for 7 mo, before I found 3FC. Those protein bars & shakes, you need to be sure to get your water in to flush your kidneys because a big servings of protein at one meal ups the risk for kidney stones.

Carol So glad to hear about Rusty! Re turkey chili, I guess I don't even notice that it isn't beef, but I would notice if I switched to beef--has more flavor. I'm used to this now, but mine is a bit dry. I'm using super low fat and avoiding sauces, minimizing the oil until my wt gets back down a little. Your DH would definitely not like mine! Maybe he will be be more in the mood for it when it's colder.

Jacqui You are SO on your way to the 160s. We are going to have to remind you not to lose too much pretty soon!

Hi everyone else, SMF, PrairieQueen, Chickadeee, Mary, Bewildered!

I can see the time is getting close to leave & I'm not even dressed. i went to the concert I mentioned Buena Vista Social Club orchestra, Adios Tour. It was 1-1/2 hrs away so didn't get home til midnight. The lead singer, Omara Portuondo is 84 and she belted out songs and danced like she was in her 20s. Unbelievable.
Tues was really hard--low mood, a bit weepy. Reminded me of pre-menopause days. Had extra carbs yesterday & feel better. The music sure helped!

Yesterday
B mushroom, onion, sauerkraut omelet whey shake
L salad, beans chicken, WF drssing,
D turkey chili, broccoli
S 2 apples, 1/3 protein bar (nasty, threw the rest away) whey shake, broccoli, quinoa, bites of pretzels and teensy bread cubes dipped in mustard, oil (winery)
2 L cinnamon spice herb tea

Thanks Jacqui Unfortunately I have never had a whoosh after TOM. I don't know how that happens for you all but great for you that it does Well rats re: the scale but I still think you weigh 175 and going lower

PrairieQueen yay for fresh and organic Your menu looks good as usual

Carol, We had a Cocker Spaniel that needed that done often. A friend of mine had a Cocker Spaniel so she would do ours with no problem I add to the shakes so it makes them hearty for me. I don't know about preaching, I just tell them what I do when I'm focused, so the practice part of this will still come and go

SeeMyFeet don't be made it was a lesson learned and unlike me I think you did learn

same weight today with TOM. Meals are done or should be for the day I am at 1172 with 149g carbs, 69g protein and 26g fiber

Rennie, I went back and looked at my weights in parentheses the last time I visited my Dad in June, and I figured then that my Dad's scale is probably 3.5 lbs lighter than mine. So like today my weight with my pj's on was 174.5, so if that's 173 without pj's, that means my scale would have me at 176.5. That sounds about right to me. That's too bad TOM doesn't bring a whoosh for you. That's the only good part about TOM!

Carol Sue, yay on Rusty getting better! Well, my jammies here are really clothes, a pair of thick jersey sweatpants and a t-shirt. I want to be ready just in case I have to get up quickly to help my Dad. He sometimes has fainting spells, and when he broke his ribs back in February, it was because he got up in the night to use the bathroom, passed out, and hit his nightstand. I normally wear thigh-length cotton nightgowns (or "sleeping shirts" as I call them) to bed. But you know, now that I'm thinking about it, since I weigh in clothes anyway, why not just wait until I get dressed for the day? That would probably be right on target with my scale! Okay, I just did that--of course, I've had breakfast and I'd like to weigh before I eat--and completely dressed (shoes, watch, the whole works) his scale has me at 177. So I'm going to start weighing once I'm dressed for the day, and hopefully that will be right in line with my scale at home!

Mars, yay on the 168 today! It sounds like you had an amazing time last night, even if you did get home very late! I'm glad it helped to lift your spirits! Oh, I'm not in any danger of losing too much, lol! Normal weight range for my height is 135-164 lbs.

SeeMyFeet, dates are really yummy, but I suppose the sugar would cause one to hold water, but it is just water, not fat, so don't be too hard on yourself! If you are going to have a sweet snack, I'd think that dates are a good choice!

PrairieQueen, your organic foods sound so healthy, and I have no doubt they make a big difference! Good for you!

Chickadeee, Mary, and FinallyFree,

I'm going to start weighing once I'm fully dressed with shoes and all. I think that will put my Dad's scale pretty near even with my scale. So today that puts me at 177.

Week 23:
10/4--179.5
10/5--(177 w/pjs)
10/6--(176.5 w/pjs)
10/7--(175.5 w/pjs)
10/8--(177 fully dressed)
10/9--
10/10--

Today's Meals
Breakfast

2 fried eggs
2 slices of bacon
Hot green tea
Mio water

Lunch:
2 chicken, cheese, pickle and mayo roll-ups
A handful of walnuts
Mio water

Snack:
Blue Diamond cocoa almonds (I really like these and I think I'm snacking because I'm bored. Not good, especially since I think snacking on nuts is what contributed to my weight loss slowdown the last time I was on this diet! I'm going to have to curb this!)

Dinner
Large field greens and veggies salad with turkey, and ranch dressing
Fage Greek yogurt with Mio
Hot green tea
Mio water

Today's Exercise:
Arm and leg exercises with exercise bands

Jacqui If that's the weight range for your ht, I shudder to think what it would say for me! fwiw, I got to my ideal wt of 140-145, about upper limit of normal BMI. But I looked gaunt & couldn't stay warm. At 150-154, most of the same clothes fit fine, but I looked healthier and no more coldness. When I tried to go back down to 145, I got into the binge-restrict cycle and ended up near 170. Now I will be happy to get to 154 and see where it settles from there.

Rennielooking at your menu, it looks like my protein/water/kidney warning is unnecessary! I eat 2x as much protein as you! I keep trying to taper it back so that I can taper back a little water, but I don't what else would keep my appetite in check.

Once again I am about to be late. Feeling overwhelmed with the amount of reading I need to get done for my trip. Yesterday was not bad; noticing my calorie deficit, which is minimal, nevertheless catches up to me at night when my guard is down. I may try no eating after 7 for a few days.

B mushroom/onion omelet with the watery runoff from chili. It thickened up nicely, like a Spanish omelet sauce. Whey shake/coffee
L salad, chicken, WF dressing, apple
S whey shake, B-up bar, broccoli dipped in PB2powder--a bit on the sweet side imho
D turkey chili, what else, lol. Using up the black mole powder that I don't care for, which contains a little sugar.
2 L herbal tea

PrairieQueen, oh I like your seafood-free jumbalaya! I don't know why that never occurred to me before! I used to love all kinds of seafood, but in my 20's I developed a severe allergy to shellfish. Seafood-free jumbalaya would be perfect!

Mars, I like your attitude! Years ago, when I was young and stupid, I thought it would be the end of the world to be above 145. Now I would be thrilled to be at 164! Last time I dieted I wanted to get down to 145, but that's only so I'd have a big leeway to play with in maintenance, hoping I'd be able to stay in the 150's, without having to worry about jumping back up into the overweight category again. But what I discovered last time was that I was pretty happy in the 170's, and I feel that same way this time around, so a goal of 164 with a leeway up into the 170's would be great! If I drop below 164 (and I doubt I will--I'm sure it will be a struggle just to get into the 160's), it will only be because my body hasn't decided it wants to stop yet. I plan to stay on the Slow Carb Diet from now on, and I figure my body will slow things down naturally and finally stop losing altogether when it's reached a set point it doesn't want to go below. I bet you are getting excited for your trip! As for eating late, sometimes I eat at 6 pm, sometimes I eat at 9 pm, but whatever time I eat at night, I try not to eat again for 12 hours so my digestive track will have a decent amount of time to finish with one day's work before having to start all over again! Not eating past 7 sounds like a good plan!

Week 23:
10/4--179.5
10/5--(177 w/pjs)
10/6--(176.5 w/pjs)
10/7--(175.5 w/pjs)
10/8--(177 fully dressed)
10/9--(176 fully dressed)
10/10--

Today's Meals
Breakfast

2 fried eggs
2 slices of bacon
Hot green tea
Mio water

Lunch:
Large field greens and veggies salad with turkey, walnuts, and ranch dressing
Mio water

Snack:

Dinner
Ribeye steak
Broccoli
Mio water

Today's Exercise:
20 minutes on Dad's exercise bike (ouch--the seat is so uncomfortable!)

SeeMyFeet, the dates are very healthy in spite of the high carb and sugar. It depends on how many you were eating. I don't think one or two with a cup of tea would hurt. We are meant to have a wide variety of foods to insure we get all the different nutrients, but some things have to be eaten in very small portions. But I can't lose an ounce, so I'm not a good one to judge!

I think I have to stay below 1400 calories to lose. Although I'm not currently counting, I know I'm not staying below 1400. Last night I fell asleep in the evening so didn't have any evening snacks. Wish I could do that every night.

Thanks Jacqui. I feel SO LUCKY to have found this thread!!!
Yes, I'm so excited about Cuba! It's getting easier to adapt to EST time. I've switched from worrying about getting low carbs & fresh veggies to worrying about traveler's diarrhea. I'm reading my first Hemingway novel, Islands in the Stream. He lived in Cuba & patrolled the sea on his boat as a volunteer during WWII.

Jacqui I'm wondering if you will be in TN still toorrow and if so is there a special Carb Day treat(s) there?

[/B]Carol, I'm noticing the same thing with my calories, that I have to eat less than before to lose. I'm hoping that if I stick to about 1400 long enough to get the ball rolling, then maybe I will be able to eat more. Back in July/Aug, I think I could eat up to about 1700 and still lose.

With evening eating, once I start, I don't want to stop. And I'm really good at rationalizing why it's a good idea to eat this & that.

Mars, aww we are all so lucky to be a part of this thread! Everyone here is the best! Yikes, traveler's diarrhea! Let's hope you don't experience that! Yes, I will be here tomorrow, and my Dad and I are going to IHOP for breakfast and he said he'd like to make brownies later, yum! Oh, and on the all-evening eating!

Thanks for reminding me I gotta earn those clappy hands Jacqui Enjoy your Carb Day! Do you have something to read when you get bored? Or to do with your hands? I am a bigtime boredom eater so i know how challenging that can be. It's great that you can tap into your previous diet history to recognize red flags. I feel that all the mistakes and regains over the span of my lifetime have helped me in the present.

I'm feeling better now that my eating is healthier and scale is reflecting it. But tonight & tomorrow will be challenging--a film festival reception & tomorrow a luncheon. Tonight my plan is to hold onto a cup of tea so that tomorrow can be Carb Day.

Yesterday
B mushroom omelet, whey shake, coffee
L salad w chicken, beans, WF dressing, apple
D turkey chili butternut squash
S whey shake, coffee, apple, chicken
2 L herbal tea

Well yesterday I kind of gave in to my TOM cravings.....
Breakfast - McD's sausage burrito w/hot sauce and Coke Life
Lunch- leftover jambalaya (1/2 serving) with two baby creamed potatoes
Snack - double serving of Skinny popcorn
Dinner - two deep-fried chicken tenders w/hot sauce and 1/2 side of loaded pin fries, skinny margarita that tasted horrible but I drank it anyway, light beer

We went to the casino yesterday and ate the buffet. I did well avoiding carbs, but then a baked sweet potato called my name so I ate it. It was well worth it. It was so sweet and creamy, and while I was eating it I was thinking about all the fiber and beta carotene I was giving my body. My body loved it. After that, I had to try a spoonful of their mac and cheese. That was tasty, but not as good as the baked sweet potato! I get excited about these things like other people do with donuts. LOL Oh, I also had a forkful of DH's pumpkin pie. I had to try it because he said it was spice city! I don't put a lot of spice in my pumpkin pie. One bite and I agreed...too much spice.

Then we went out to the floor to gamble. DH played the dancing cupcake slot machine again and brought home $250. He had it up to $300 but kept playing. When it got down to $250 I said "Cash out...we're leaving!" On the way home we stopped at the grocery store and he bought CUPCAKES!! LOL I ate one, and it was dry and yukky. Not yummy like my sweet potato!

I think Rusty is healed, but he still has a few days for meds. He is still not eating his dog food which concerns me. DH says he will eat when he gets good and hungry. I wonder if the meds is killing his appetite. He's getting bits of people food here and there to take his meds so I guess that's holding him over. He is acting so weird though. Doing things he never did before. But I love him, and he loves me. That's what counts.

Rennie, never tried cabbage with ketchup, but how would it be different than sauerkraut with ketchup? The broccoli, cabbage and beef sound good. My kind of meal, but not something DH would be interested in.

With the shakes, I think I would prefer to just eat all the different things that are going into the shakes rather than whipping them all up into a smoothie. I need that chewing action.

Maybe the reason you never got a whoosh with TOM is because you never had a big weight gain before TOM. Mine was never real big either way. I did notice that I used to crave sugar before, then after I would have no appetite for a day or so.

PrairieQueen, are you from the south but living in Ohio? I wondered about the jambalya. You made me hungry for popcorn again, so I'll probably make some later. It's a little more work to make it in the pan than just popping it in the microwave, so I can resist it when I'm too lazy. Then you have to clean the pan with the oil and popcorn kernels stuck in the bottom.

Mars, hope you don't have any travelers problem while in Cuba. Is their water safe? Sometimes I wonder if ours is safe! LOL

Jacqui, DH used to love seeing the IHop commercials but when he saw our local IHop, he wasn't interested in going in. Really, I don't think they would have much on the menu that would interest me. We don't eat breakfast out very often, and when we do, I just like a MCDonald's breakfast sandwich.

I wish our missing indians would come back, including Chickadeee, but we know she tends to wander off occasionally. Did anyone ever play that game, missing indian? I just remembered it when I typed that. You were sent out of the room, then someone else left, and when you came back you had to figure out who was missing. Sounds easy, but when I played it, It was hard.

DH usually makes our breakfast, around 9 AM. Today he had a cup cake with his coffee, so that's his breakfast, and it looks like I am on my own. I have had 4 cups of coffee, and am now starting to get a little hungry. I think I will try to see how long I can go before my first meal of the day. The cup cakes are just not calling me. I love eggs, and that's breakfast every morning. Maybe today it will be lunch instead of breakfast, but there will be eggs involved! I think I'll go get on the scale....that might help me decide if I want to eat or not! I have enough fat to live off of for a while! LOL

Well, I'm at 202, down 1 lb since yesterday, in spite of the casino buffet. It's still not good. For months, my body was at a setpoint of 196. Somehow, I went back over 200 and waffled back and forth for a while. Now I've developed a new setpoint over 200. I haven't been under 200 for the past couple months. I have to get back into Onderland. Right now I'm only 15 lbs under my highest weight ever. This is how it creeps up, little by little. I guess I have to change my mind on not worrying about weight anymore. I don't know if I'm going to do slow carb or something else. It's hard for me to avoid all carbs for 6 days straight and then when I cave I feel that I've failed. Maybe I can avoid carbs as much as possible, and when I do have them, make it a very small portion. Eating a small portion will feel like a victory, not a failure. Goodbye to cupcakes, zingers, pancakes, and things I don't really like anyway, and hello to healthier carbs, like yummy sweet potatoes!! Growing up, my mother NEVER served sweet potatoes. She probably didn't like them. I never tried them until the past few years when baked sweet potatoes started showing up on restaurant menus. I can't believe how much I love them! I missed out on this for 60 years! Still can't stand the ones with brown sugar and marshmallow.

Thanks Carol! I hear conflicting info. Apparently traveler's diarrhea is just a matter of being exposed suddenly to different microbes in the food & water. The director of my grp said the water is safe where we are going, ie in the hotels, but they will carry a big jug of bottled water in the van that takes us to each place, & we can fill up our water bottels from that.
The CDC website recommends HepA & Typhoid for Cuba, & there is a cholera outbreak, also some mosquito borne things. I'll be in hotels but going through rural areas. Got my shots, immodium, cipro, mosquito netting, DEET, & will probably bring some iodine tablets.
I think the most likely risk is traveler's diarrhea--would hate to be dealing with that while hiking. Maybe I should pack some adult diapers,lol....

Mars, lol! You have earned them! Congrats on the drop! Great idea on sticking to tea tonight and having Carb Day tomorrow. That should work out very well! I am trying to stay busier now. I was watching too much tv with my Dad. I rarely watch tv during the day at home. I think watching tv triggers something in me to want to snack. I spent yesterday cleaning around here some. They have a cleaning lady who comes in once a week, and I do the daily cooking and cleaning up for Dad while I'm here, but I worked on additional things the cleaning lady doesn't do, like clearing out their refrigerator and washing windows. I brought my laptop with me so I get on there, and I brought some puzzle books along and I work on them some, but still, I need to stay busy. I absolutely love to read but my eyes are not what they used to be so I didn't bring a book along. (I should have.) I'll get out and sweep off his deck and rake some fallen leaves today. Oh wait, today is Carb Day and I can boredom-eat all I want, lol, so I may save the deck and leaves for tomorrow!

PrairieQueen, I'm sorry you're experiencing Tom cravings. That wasn't too bad though. You'll be able to recover easily enough!

Carol Sue, yay on having what you wanted at the casino and still losing a lb! And congrats on your DH winning at the slots! I'm so glad Rusty is better! I think once he gets off the meds, like you said, he'll get his appetite back. I wanted to tell you, I've read a few different lists of allowed foods on the Slow Carb Diet, and some people allow sweet potatoes, since they aren't white carbs, It's an individual thing. For some people they work. For others they don't, and apparently they work for you since you lost a lb! In fact, that guy named Stephen who has the website "The 4-Hour Life" (the guy who's a super fan of Tim Ferriss, The Four-Hour Body book, and the Slow Carb Diet), allows sweet potatoes. He provided this link of allowed foods in a comment to one of his subscribers: http://www.scribd.com/doc/93335086/T...imothy-Ferriss. That list includes both yams and sweet potatoes!

Hi Chickadeee, Rennie, SeeMyFeet, Mary, FinallyFree, and Bewildered (wherever you are!)

I had pancakes and sausage at IHOP this morning and wow, am I stuffed! I ended up with a headache too. I don't know if that's weather- or allergy-related or pancake-related, lol!

Hm, I'm skeptical about how easily I'm losing weight. I do hope I'm not losing muscle, but my exercise is not anywhere close to what it was. I'm not eating differently but my exercise has definitely dropped off, so I wonder.

Week 23:
10/4--179.5
10/5--(177 w/pjs, which would have been 179 fully dressed)
10/6--(176.5 w/pjs, which would have been 178.5 fully dressed)

10/8--(177 fully dressed)
10/9--(176 fully dressed)
10/10--(175 fully dressed) Carb Day

Today's Meals
