Angry Confusing Food Labels

I needed to rant, so I figured this would be a good place.

After a weekend of not-so diet friendly eating, I always resolve to eat healthy on the weekdays. So on Monday night, while watching a movie, I decide to make some kettle corn. After a glance at the nutrition facts, I got a bit confused. They include the facts for both popped and unpopped. Also, the serving size is a little unclear, since they showed how much one cup is nutritionally. This lead me to believe that there are 3 servings:120 calories in the whole bag. So I ate one. [I was tired at this point, didn't really use common sense]

The next day, I am in the midst of eating kettle corn again. This time, I read the facts more carefully. Turns out there are TWELVE servings in the whole bag: 480 calories. Needless to say, I tossed that bowl I was eating right out.

It made me mad that I went over my limit Monday, and probably again yesterday in something as meaningless as kettle corn.

Companies really should be clearer on nutrition labels!!

Popcorn is, hands down, THE WORST when it comes to confusing nutrition labels. I don't eat it much, but I see a post on 3FC about it at least once a month. I've tried to help others with the math and sometimes the numbers just don't add up. So rant away!

Don't worry about it too much, though... if I'm reading this right, you thought you ate 40 calories of popcorn, but you really ate 160... so you went over by 120, which is about 1/30 pound. So, maybe this week you'll lose 1/30th of a pound less than you would have otherwise. I don't think you'll notice. At least you learned something from it!

SO frustrating for you! Ties in with a recipe thread on this site -- I posted there that my BIG issue is recipes with photos and the photo shows, for example, a peach tartlet (kind of small, but definitiely worth it) for 6 WW points. Then when you read the recipe, 6 WW applies to HALF the tartlet. Like, you can SMELL the tartlet for 6 WW points!!! As IF....

Good thing you caught this error before your gorked out on kettle corn for a few weeks, like I do when I find a good "food find"!

Me too! I used to look at the bag and think that it was only going to make me mad to eat that little bag, but I eat slow and drink lots of water. It works too and if I still want more another back won't neccessarily hurt if I have the room in my calorie count, which I usually do. If I was to measure my own, I would be in trouble then. It's a mind thing I guess. If I know that I have to open another bag, I will be less likely to eat more.

You have lost 51 lbs!!! You are obviously doing something right, so don't worry about it.

Why do they have to make it so hard to figure out? And how the heck can ANY bag of popcorn have 12 servings??

12 cups is a full bag of popcorn. One cup is what they give the calories for. Take a measuring cup and measure out your portion. I don't use microwave popcorn, but do have airpopped nearly every day. 2 T of kernals is 1 point and it all pops.

I am so sorry. I hate sticker shock too!

I have become very sceptical of prepackaged food and restaurant meals. At least you are aware now.

I always look at servings per container and then multiply the calories. But sometimes with pop corn bags, the servings per thing could be servings in the box it self not how many servings are in each bag. That I aways found discouraging. I agree about the 100 calorie bags. I used to think 1 big bag was one serving. Couldn't understand how they thought you should share it.

I got this from a Zanto 8" Spinach Florentine Pizza I had recently:

Serving Size 1/2 Pizza
Servings per package 2
Calories 110
Calories from Fat 40

Amount/Serving
Fat 16 grams
Carbs 31 grams
Protein 15 grams

But with 9 calories per Fat gram and 4 calories per Carb and Protein gram, added up, that is 328 calories per serving.

Seems to mean that the whole 8" pizza is 656 calories, way more than the 220 it says at first!

I wrote to the company via their website to try and find out the real deal, but got no reply. My mother, an old Weight Watchers pro, thinks there is no way it could be 656 calories. But what do you all think? :/ I hope not because it's super tasty, heh! And the crust isn't greasy at all...

ETA: Oh poop, I just found an 8" pizza listing at Livestrong/The Daily Plate for 900 calories total (Digiorno Pepperoni) so I'm guessing my spinach one might really be 656 calories Now I think I might know why my weight loss slowed down this week
