This Weeks Healthiest Food - ONIONS

OMG, I mean is there anyone who DOESN'T love onions? (don't hang me, I'm sure you're out there, ;) )

But seriously, onions are PHENOMENAL. I eat red ones raw in salads all the time. Sooooo many recipes that I make use them. Grilled, broiled, sauteed - yummmm. I can't imagine life without onions. Glad I don't have to.

I can't really do raw onions (too strong!) but I do love caramelized onions on a light hamburger...they get so sweet and decadent. I use them in all kinds of things, obviously as a base for soups, but I really toss some into must things I make.

Here's a trick (stolen from Rachel Ray, tested by me many times..). You know how when you cook with leaner ground meats, like turkey breast or extra lean sirloin, they tend to get really dried out? For each pound of meat, add one grated onion and 1/4 cup chicken broth and mix in with any other seasoning before forming and cooking. It keeps the meat from drying out and gives great onion flavor.

My grandfather's companion doesn't care for onions OR garlic...not a life I can imagine living!

Onions! Yum! I don't think I can add to that... ;)

Onions are growing on me...in cooked form ONLY.

I love onions. They are amazinng. I eat them raw on salads, cooked up in stir fry, cooked with burgers or steak. I use to love onion rings but the whole fried thing. Hungry girl has a baked recipe that I keep meaning to try.

I use onions everyday in some form or another. I put onions in everything (except dessert, maybe). If you don't like onions in my house you'd better learn to pick them out 'cause this chick's not cooking without them.

Remember this oldie from the 60s....

I Love Onions
by (Donald Cochrane / John Hill)
Susan Christie - 1966

I don't like snails, or toads, or frogs,
Or strange things living under logs,
But, mmm, I love onions.
I don't like dancin' with crazy Ted,
He's always jumpin' on my head,
But, mmm, I love onions.

Onions, onions, la la la. Onions, onions, ha ha ha.
Root toot doodle-ee-oot doot doo doot.
Onions, onions, la la la. Onions, onions, ha ha ha.
Root toot doodle-ee-oot doot doo doot.

I don't like rain, or snow, or hail,
Or Moby Dick, the great white whale,
But, mmm, I love onions.
I don't like shoes that pinch your toes,
Or people who squirt you with a garden hose,
But, mmm, I love onions.

Onions, onions, la la la. Onions, onions, ha ha ha.
Root toot doodle-ee-oot doot doo doot.
Onions, onions, la la la. Onions, onions, ha ha ha.
Root toot doodle-ee-oot doot doo doot. Yeah!

(Spoken)The onion is a tuberous vegetable and is a member of the genus stinkus delicioso. It was highly prized by the ancient Egyptian pharaohs, and their friends and cousins-a. They cause watering of the eyes and rubifaction of the skin, but it is very, very tasty. (huhuh)

Onions, onions, la la la. Onions, onions, ha ha ha.
Root toot doodle-ee-oot doot doo doot.
Onions, onions, la la la. Onions, onions, ha ha ha.
Root toot doodle-ee-oot doot doo doot.

I put a roast of beef in the crock before I went to work yesterday morning. DH put veggies in a little later. For dinner, I had only beef and the onions. They were so good! I could have eaten much much more!

LOL... that's a nice poem!

I love, love, love onions. What would my world be w/o onions?! I love them raw, cooked, grilled, baked, roasted, sauteed, they're just so yummy! :T

I'm quoting this from the Whole Health MD website:

"Onions are low in calories and, to be truthful, in most vitamins and minerals (although they do supply a little calcium, iron, and potassium). However, the many flavorful members of this plant family-- scallions, leeks, shallots and garlic as well as onions themselves--are rich sources of a number of phytonutrients. They contain allyl sulfides (sulfur compounds that may lower blood pressure and discourage tumor growth), quercetin (a flavonoid with high Antioxidant activity), and saponins (substances connected with cholesterol-lowering and tumor inhibition). "

Eat your onions!!! :D

Oops... that wasn't a poem, it's a song...lol! DUH! :D

I'm also a huge onion fan - raw, cooked, caramelized, grilled, red, vidalia, shallot, leek, green...all of em, any which way!

PinkyPie 04-14-2008 04:15 PM

love onions, could eat them on or with anything! I always do raw red onions in my spinach salads, I through them in egg or tuna pasta salad, we cook them in our spaghetti sauce, we eat them on our hamburgers...

LOVE onions!

I'm an onion FANATIC, I eat them almost daily. Raw, cooked, I don't care, I'll eat 'em. I prefer the sweeter onions (Vidalia, Wala Wala, yellow sweets) to other varieties, but I also love red onions, especially on salads.

Baked stuffed onions are awesome, too.

I don't do raw onions, but I usually add them to whatever I cook.

walking2lose 04-16-2008 08:15 PM

Another onion lover here... raw and cooked. Vidalias are especially yummy, but I'll eat any.

I'm also a big garlic fan - only trouble with these two foods is the breath issue .... anyone who has good tips for onion and/or garlic breath, please offer them up!

That's why I always have sugarless gum in my purse. I could easily eat a whole onion a day.
