Default First Goal

This might seem silly, but my worst habits are buying crappy, fatty foods that I don't need or want, just for the sake of it.

So my first goal I am setting myself is to stop buying it at all...

I mean you can't eat what you don't have right?

And once what I have is gone, that's it out of my life.

Snacking is my worst habit, I often eat when I'm bored or when my food is cooking, just out of sheer low will power, now is the time to master my will power ad prove I can do these things.

Has anyone else got any advice? Opinions?

I'm right there with you. I would suggest not cutting out EVERY crappy/fatty food (at least all at once) because it may make you crave them even more. I think if you gradually cut most out, that would be the best bet. I have been working on weight loss for 3 years now and have found that just cutting things out is the worst for me personally. It always leads to a set back. I myself am still looking for that "balance" if you will. I think everyone has to find what works best for them. If throwing out all the junk food gives you more motivation, then by all means, go for it!

I would suggest, if it at all possible, you consider tossing what's already in the house. If you're giving the stuff up, that doesn't mean you have to eat what you've already got--give it away, toss it.

And second, I've found that when I do have a snacky treat, I do best when I buy a single serving size of it. I want chips? Okay--one small bag--can't overeat it if I only bought one bag for a treat.

Other people have had success with never buying it, but occasionally having the snacky food out--but not where it's in the house and always tempting.

You'll work out what is best for you--for every person who finds that giving something totally up makes them eventually binge, there's another who finds that having any at all is the path to overeating the item--and another who eats whatever s/he wants in moderation.

There are lots of opinions since we all respond differently to temptations and we all respond differently to "just have a little".

Couple of things about snacking that might help. If you like potato chips, and I do, the best alternative I have found are Pop chips original flavor. These are, for a potato snack, fairly awesome nutrition wise. And they are bursting with potato flavor. Are they kettle chips? No. But pretty darn good.

And lately I have been trying hummus with baby carrots. I know people talk about that combo a lot, but it is really good. And an apple a day. I read a Huffington post article about apples. And as good as we think they are, they are even better that that.

I love potato chips, in fact it is probably my cryptonite...especially with a coffee truck that swings by the office 3x a day it is especially tempting. I love to make kale chips to curb the craving. For me it is the crunchy feeling that gets me, so kale chips satisfy that craving. Wash a bunch of kale, break into small pcs in a bowl, toss in a bit of olive oil enough to coat and sprinkle a bit of salt, himalayan sea salt if you have it. Bake at 350 until you start seeing them crisp and dry up - make sure they don't burn because it tastes bitter when they get too brown.

Also when I have cravings for ice cream, I have frozen fruits ready in the freezer and blend that with some yogurt and milk. I do add a dollop of vanilla frozen yogurt for texture but the shake is a much healthier alternative!
