Smile 30lbs down! - My low-carb approach and journey

Hi all,

My first time here.

I'd like to share a few thoughts to give those who could use my experience, and also get some encouragement to keep going towards my goal.

I started at about 220 this summer, and have been able to lose 30 lbs so far. Now, that might sounds like really slow, but I have been very intermittent with my effort due to grad school stress.

But I have been following the low-carb diet, and have been able to lose the weight not just due to caloric deficiency, but also, I feel, the effects of lower carb in my diet.

I am able to get full quickly after a small high protein meal, and my insulin level is very low on low-carb, which allows me to shed the weight.

My basic meal is chicken breast with vegetables. I am never hungry. Though the meals are not the most enjoyable part of the day.

I exercise, cardio and weight training, about 30 min to 1 hour 3-4 times, but this depends how busy I am at school .

I am now at 27% body fat, and want to get down to 10-15%, which means I have to lose another 20-30 lbs.

Hopefully I'll get there by summer!

It sounds like you're doing really well!!!! Keep up the good work! I know how hard it is to lose weight in grad school and I applaud your efforts.

I lost 15 lbs in the months leading up to my wedding, and gained it all back in the aftermath! Time to get back to that better weight!

Wow that is some awesome success, you're really on the right page. How do you like to prepare your chicken breasts?

Good luck!!!!! When I was in grad school I gained a lot of weight, it wasn't until I finished and passed the board that I was able to finally start losing some damn weight. School is damn stressful.

I buy them from WalMart, ~$20 for about 6-7 pieces, put them all in a big Zip plastic bag, and add different kinds of marinades. I choose the ones without any sugar; I just open it up and pour it in the bag. Fridge over night, and cook at 350 F the next night.

Easy.

I used to do beef also, and mix with mushroom (in a can/water) and green pepper, with chilli sauce, (prepared powder). It's very good but it is higher fat content so I plan to cut that out and stick with chicken and maybe tuna.

I also have to have about 4-5 doses of Metamucil Fiber. Very important when on low-fiber plan. Though salad (prepared, in a bag, simply lettuce and other veggies) will help.

It's not easy, but it does work. The most important factor is lack of carbs which lead to lower insulin, which allows the body to use fat as energy. Look up 'lose the wheat lose the belly' for evidence.

I have just started doing low carb also, and I also find my appetite is much lowered.

Grad school on its own is very hard so you should be very proud of juggling it with the weight loss. Your plan is working, stick to it and you will be at your goal soon. Keep up the good work and congrats...
