Starting to Jog

This is a big thing for me. First of all my ankles were 'too weak' or I was too heavy for them and everytime I tried to jog it felt as though I sprained them. So I have lost some weight and am trying again. I walk for a bit then I see a goal and I jog to it (not far by any means) - ie. the next corner, lamp post etc. Then walk again and then I do another short jog. I am probably only jogging for 30 - 60 seconds at a time, but I'm doing it! I can be very self-conscious, yet I was doing it outside on a busy street with my family tonight. I'm just proud to be trying it and can't wait to get better.

You should be very proud! Congrats and keep on posting.

Congrats! I tried to start running a couple weeks ago. I'm trying "barefoot" running to see if my knees can stand it. But somehow I hurt my calf muscle. I hope your first week is going better than mine did!

Try the C25K (couch to 5K) app you can get for your smart phone. Great program that starts you out very slowly. In 9 weeks you will be running a 5k. I actually ran on after week 5 of the program.

Congratulations! Terrific. Keep doing what you're doing, and you'll be posting race times around here pretty soon.

Also, yoyomama, make sure that right after you run (no matter how long or what distance) that you put just the front part of your feet on a stair. Stand up straight, hold onto something, and lower and raise your heel 10 times. Do 3 reps. Make sure you do that every time you run. It really works. Learned it from Runner's World.

I don't have a smart phone but I did try the first of c25k last night. At first I thought yeah right I cannot jog one minute straight, but I did it several times over and over during our 20 min route. Small accomplishment I know, but I had it my head to just do 30 seconds if 60 seconds killed me. I checked the time and it said 35 seconds, so I thought well I'm over half way - keep going!! Tomorrow I go again!! Thanks for the support :)

Good for you, MeltinMom! :D

I started running the same way, 30-60 seconds at a time. I was also the same weight as you. Now I run 30-60 minutes at a time and I can't imagine my life without running.

If I could be so forward as to give a bit of advice, it would be this: There is no such thing as running too little or too slowly when you're starting out. It is more about establishing a habit and not injuring or discouraging yourself.

If you just keep putting one foot in front of the other, you can achieve any running goal you make for yourself. You've already taken the hardest step in that thousand mile journey, the first one.
