Default The amazing resilience of the human body

So, I walked 3 miles today. It's not too big of an accomplishment for someone who's been doing it everyday for nearly 2.5 years, BUT it is for someone who lost half the bone in her femur (thigh bone) last December (serious bone infection due to MRSA). I started up my walking (for exercise) 6 weeks ago, and now I'm back up to my 3 miles (albeit my time isn't as good). It felt so good. And I only started walking without my walker/crutches back in March, and I was completely bed bound for Jan and Feb. It's truly going to take a year to completely heal (and when my doctor jokes I can start rock climbing and water skiing) but I was given the ok to start working out again (even though I'm still struggling to get back into aerobics again but I did some this week).

It makes me feel pretty good that I didn't use my surgery/illness as an excuse to fall back to old ways and gain all the weight back (although I did gain a few pounds back). I couldn't imagine anything worse happening (well I guess I could), but it's good to know I'm pretty much 'locked in' to finishing my journey. And no one would have blamed me if I gained the weight back -- after what I'd been though. But I didn't, and once again, I'm fully committed to being the healthiest, fittest person I can be.

It must have felt wonderful to be back out walking and up to your three miles. Great going! I am so happy for you.

Wow! You've really been through... congrats on such a great accomplishment! You should be proud of your determination and resilience. BTW, do you have an artifical femur? MRSA is scary!!!

Wow! You are absolutely right that you would have had an excuse to gain the weight back, and the fact that you pushed on through a medical mess like that is a HUGE accomplishment! Congrats and best of luck to you!

Bone infections are terribly difficult to treat, let alone MRSA. Congratulations on your accomplishments.

Harpo -- this is a true victory! And the fact that you didn't use this as an excuse for regain shows you that you've crossed the bridge and it's a lifestyle now. If you can survive this ordeal without falling back into using food as a crutch, then you can survive anything!!

What an example of courage you are. So glad your health is improving. I have a friend that just got out of the hospital with MRSA , she is not out of the woods, yet.

You absolutely rock, lady!
I did not anything about your health issue (I was not a chick yet in December) and I am totally blown away. You deserve huge fireworks.

Very inspirational, chickie!
You set a great example to those of us who have no excuse not to get up and exercise. You have a great excuse... yet you don't fall back on it. That shows some serious character.

This is as much a testament to the strength of your will or mind as it is the resiliency of the human body.

Wonderful news!
