Woot!!! We just rejoined about a month ago. I have gone 3 x week and even though my muscles can not be seen yet below the fat layer, I am starting to feel them Good luck!

ETA; I go for 45 minutes; I solely do weight machines. I do a full body work out; I go from machine to machine; no breaks.

Good for you and its great that its at your work too. Maybe in time you could do a short time during lunch --- after the 2lb salad LOL. Hope you find a machine that makes it fun.

I be too uncomfortable to go to a public gym.... - maybe when I lose another 50 lbs I will be able to wear those Yoga pants or shorts and not stick out LOL.. I walk and have a rebounder that I am starting to "hop" on at home.

Have a great time in Turkey too and there will be alot of hills to climb there I bet!

Sue You should not let your weight hold you back!!!! If you were to join, you would be amazed of the support of others! My gym is pretty big; you get it all there; the thin aerobic girls, the muscular body builder chicks, flabby moms like me , frail and sick grandmas.... from 14 year old to 104 old. -- I can understand why it could be intimidating....but if you were to hire a PT for a few sessions who would give you a program...you would lift those weights like you owned that gym!!

I thank you Sum........ I am on the real broke side right at this moment too... I had been unemployed for 5 months and just started a new job (1/2 of the pay that I had been getting) 3 weeks ago.... So need a few months to get settled, get a part time job and hopefully be that 50 lbs lighter and more confident in myself to grunt in front of others lol.... Thank you for the encouragement.

I signed up today! I have been going for two weeks on a free pass and I am hooked. Those close to me have been joking about how if someone told them three months ago that I would become a gym rat they would have laughed their butts off.

I'm doing a program, The New Rules of Lifting, and that definitely made it less intimidating. I go in, I know exactly what to do and how to do it, and I'm done knowing I got in an awesome workout.

My workout takes about 40 minutes, and I spend 10 in the tanning bed. I go late at night after the kids are in bed, so I just go in my gym clothes, no changing time required. My workout buddies are guys, and they all wear basketball or sweat shorts and sleeveless shirts. They are all overweight to obese, fwiw. No one bats an eye.

Wahey Bluejay! Virtual gym buddies!

My trick will be to go with a friend tomorrow to show me the ropes. Then I will be on my own and my strategy will be to target the quiet times to avoid any unnecessary embarassment. But I do have a feeling all my walking is gonna pay off.

My current plan is to go early in the morning, before work starts, which will mean waking up an hour or so earlier. Gulp. But I do like to do things early. Even the salad bar.

I am going to Turkey late next week so I am hoping to get some gym in here and then at the hotels I go to while traveling.

Just bought my new gym gear which was interesting (I seriously did not own a pair of shorts let alone sports shoes). Gym gear sizes go way bigger than normal clothes. I am in a large in gym gear. Yet XL is the best I can hope for in real clothes. I bought a pair of XL gym shorts by mistake and they are swamping me!

FWIW, in no way does any of this mean I am giving up beer!

Sue - you shouldn't feel uncomfortable at all. You'd be surprised how 'unfit' the skinny folks can be!

I love going to the gym. I go after 7pm and the crowds usually thin out by then. I used to be embarrassed initially specially if I'd spot some cute guys, I'd be staring at my feet the whole time wishing I would disappear!! After a few weeks, a gentleman came up to me and gave me some tips on trouble areas. He lost 80 lbs so I figured I will listen to him (Free trainer ) Gyms are good, if you focus on yourself and not on the b.s that 80% of the people are up to (ppl talking on phones, reading magazines while strolling in the park on the treadmill, folks trying to show off their muscle power )

If you look at this way, everyone who goes to the gym wants to change their appearance cos they are not happy with the way they look. They are just as conscious as you are (I guess ) so might as well go and do your thing and come out feeling GREAT!! It's therapeutic, am telling you!

Well, just got back from the gym and it was awesome! I went with my friend at a quiet time which was nice. He showed me nearly all of the machines so I am good to go on my own tomorrow. I hardly broke a sweat until the end which was great. But I do feel real shakey now and will most probably be sore tomorrow. It feels like a real good coffee. It's woken me up!

I hope I can stick with it. I am sure I can.

PS I like the gym because it let's every day feel like the weekend when I am naturally more active with chores, mowing the lawn, kids etc. rather than just sitting at my desk. I think it will work for me.

I'm so glad today was a good experience for you! It just blows my mind how much I look forward to going now. It's the best high, to get in there and workout hard and know I have just done something really good for myself. Keep us posted on how you like it?

Went again today but on my own this time and it was brilliant! I worked out a lot harder than yesterday. Going early is good for me because I really do not like having too many people there. It's the same with the salad bar. I don't like crowds!

However, the killer trick for me today was to take a low calorie, high protein shake after my workout. I noticed yesterday than I was ravenous after the gym and was worrying today how I would make it through lunch. But the protein shake did it's job!

My only concern is the immediate post-gym rush you get which makes it very hard for me to focus. Since the gym is downstairs in my work it's like 5 minutes between when I end my session, shower and then get to my desk. So it takes a bit of time to get into the swing of doing work.
