Default ~~Figuring out actual carb content...confused.

Okay, I know this is the second topic that I posted tonight, but here goes.............

When the food label states that there are "10 carbs" in 1/2 cup serving, and all other content is listed too....fat, fiber etc..., am I to count it as "10 carbs"? I thought that I read something about figuring out the "actual carb count." I did buy an Atkins bar and on the front of the package it said to count as 2 grams of carbs, despite on the back, more were listed. ( Do you know those bars cost $4.99 in Canada?? Yikes) Anyone else buy these?

Any takers on this one

Sue

You can take the fiber grams away from the carb grams and get the effective carb count or ECC. Sometimes on those bars they don't count the glycerine carbs, but it still affects some people like pure sugar, triggering cravings and causing stalls, so be careful. If it's dressing or triscuits or whatever, subtract the fiber.

Good question SueBee and it's something that I've been thinking about off and on sice my return to this WOE.

I dont know if not counting some of the carb grams because you can subtract fiber is a good idea. I mean why can you do that ? Does anyone know. I know that some people say that Dr. A say's it o.k. to do that but I'm the type of person that wants to know ....why is it o.k. ? How does it work and is it a standard rule or one that works for some but not others?

$4.99 for a carb bar!! That's awful! I dont even pay that much for steak per pound!

Fiber doesn't have the same affect as sugar carbs on our bodies. It sort of runs through if you know what I mean. It doesn't cause the insulin surge that other carbs cause.

Hi Chrissy. Those bars are a terrible price. I live in Alberta and that is what they cost most places. If you can go to Super Store or to a GNC Health Food Store you can get them for 3.89 (a little better, but not much!!!) At GNC they are also 4.99, but they will give you 20% off if you join their little 'club'. They also carry other Atkins Products for a ridiculous price.

Default Atkins Rules

I eat flax-o-mealk cereal so I'll use that as an example

Clas -143
Fat- 7g
Carbs - 12
Fiber- 10
Protein - 13

Net carbs 2g

12gcarbs -10g fiber =2gnet carbs

you cna also deduct sugar alcohol from your net carbs as well (note: not sugar but sugar alcohol)
