Default Urgent Splenda Question

Splenda has carbs? I keep seeing this -
Coffee = 2.1 gm
2 Pks Splenda = 1.6 gm
on the daily thread. So coffee, black coffee has 2.1 carbs? And a pack of Splenda has .8 carbs?

Oh holy crud.

If this is true, I think I know why I haven't been losing weight.

ACK!

Someone, tell me it isn't so, PLEASE!

Nicole,

I switched to Splenda a few months ago and I love it!!! It does not raise your blood sugar level...I use it in my coffee and it's popping up in a lot of other products.

Every morning I have a big mug of coffee with 2-3 packs of Splenda and several tbls. of N/F creamer. I use Splenda on my fruit sometimes. I honestly feel that using Splenda helps curb my cravings for "real" sugar.

I honestly would not worry too much about using a couple of packets of Splenda throughout the day as long as you're eating your fruits, veggies and lean meats...it's actually a welcome dieting tool.

Best of luck to you.

Yes splenda has carbs, the packs say >1 gm
I wrote the company to find out exactly how much is in each packet but haven't heard back from them yet. So basically I count it as either .7 or .8 gms just to have something to go by. I'm hoping its less but I'd rather be safe when counting carbs then sorry.

I'll let you know if they answer my question.

Coffee has .8 gm of carbs per 6 oz.

This site says that coffee is .7 gms per 6 oz... so its not far off.

I wish I could say I'm just having a couple of packs throughout the day. Let's see - 2 in my morning coffee, 2 in my afternoon hot tea, and oh yeah, about 2 in each of the 10 - 15 big glasses of (weak) iced caffine free iced green tea. So that's like 25 little packets at a minimum...and possibly many MANY more. That's nearly more carbs than you're allowed for a whole day on induction. Man. I feel like a ding bat!

Your not a ding bat, its just a learning process. I screwed up alot too. I didn't know coffee had carbs and tea doesn't ??? who knew.

Its a hard thing to learn but I think once you have the routine down you'll do great !!

Besides, you have us and we have everyone here to help us along.

Hugs !!!

Thank goodness! If not for this site, I never would've made the Splenda connection!

And I didn't know coffee had carbs either. Hot tea for me from now on.

Is that decaf coffee or reg. coffee. I have not given up my morning coffee. I am not sure that I can (or if I want to) switch to all decaf.

RFP, you might want to cruise the menu threads for your answer...I THINK it was regular and my hunch is that decaf would be the same, but I can't swear to it. Would hate to tell you the wrong thing.

I still have morning coffee and a Diet Coke every now and then - giving up caffine just isn't very important to me at this point.

Default CARBS EVERYWHERE!!

It also took me a while to realize that even coffee had carbs - go figure!

I drink decaf now...but an 8 oz mug has about 1 carb, and each packet of Splenda has one carb...these of course should be counted into your daily totals.

Furthermore, if you are doing Atkins, you are only supposed to have 3 "servings" of splenda per day.....!!!

Yes, I know that now. And I even remember eading it somewhere on the Atkins website but I thought it was like the "no caffine" thing - kind of optional, depending on how you tolerate it. Didn't realize Spelenda had actual carbs.

Regarding the carbs, I don't think it matters regular of decaf but I could be wrong. I didn't see anything listing them both.

Dr. A of SBD says that coffee can stimulate the appetite in some people and might best be avoided by them. He also says regular or decaf is optional. I find coffee actually suppresses my appetite! If I have two cups before breakfast I need to force myself to eat - and that doesn't happen too darn often!

However, Dr. A of Atkins (RIP) says to avoid caffeine and to drink decaf only if you must. When I was on Atkins, I drank regular coffee and didn't find it screwed me up.

I didn't realize that coffee had carbs. Over the past few years I've cut down to just one cup of half decaff a day but lately I've been drinking two or three cups daily. For me, the few extra carbs are worth it because the coffee gives me an energy boost I really missed. I find that I don't sit around as much when I've had two or three cups of coffee. It also stimulates my bladder so I'm not retaining as much fluid. I just have to remember that I still need to drink water as well.
