Maintainers Weekly Chat: November 21 - November 27
It's a challenge to avoid folks who still want to relive the election, as I've said and heard about all that I can. Today, in 1916, Emperor Franz Josef of Austria died. Now that was a problematic transfer of power.
I'm working on my mojo to walk to class today despite the light dusting of snow. So little snow isn't a physical barrier; it is, however, a nudge to make up an excuse to be indolent. If I walk, then I don't have to brush the snow off of my car - how's that for a motivation, LOL.
November has arrived up here in Toronto. Blowing snow, gusty winds, etc. We were wearing Tshirts last week so the overnight shift in temps will be a bit of a challenge.
Going to go brush snow off my car in about 30 minutes. SIGH.
Here I sit, working from my hotel room again, rather than from my mother's house. I was supposed to drive up there yesterday, but canceled because of the weather forecast -- wisely it seems, as they got just about 12 inches of snow.
Here, there was a dusting on my windshield this morning, which one swipe from the windshield wipers cleared.
I have to work through Wednesday, so I'll depart on Thanksgiving Day itself. There's supposed to be a little more snow or rain that day, but nothing like the current storm.
And my apartment still has an air conditioner sitting in the window of the disused bedroom, since the kitchen flooding happened at the end of August, when the weather was still hot and muggy. If and when I ever move back, that's one task I'll need some help with. I've never before waited until December to get the air conditioner drained and placed into storage.
Rain here this morning. A welcomed change. It got so cold over the weekend that we turned on the furnace. I suppose it's the right time of year for that here.
My Thanksgiving will be a little sad this year as my sister and BIL will not be able to join us as planned. BIL's heart failure is causing extreme edema and the medication is not helping so his cardiologist advised against travel.
I want to say Happy Thanksgiving to all (if you are Canadian then belated Happy Thanksgiving!) I am thankful to be a part of such a wonderful, supportive community. You are all terrific!!
Here is the xray of my puppy's hip region. Very bizarre. I will talk to my vet after the holiday weekend as to what he heard back from the specialist. I also need to get my older dog neutered. Both testicles are undescended and I should have had it done a few years ago.

Alice, that's one heck of a pseudojoint that appears to have formed - hard to tell from this single view but possible pelvic girdle trauma initially? It looks like your options might include total hip replacement as an adult; FHO (removal of the top part of the femur to allow creation of a "false" or muscular joint; works best in lighter dogs); and amputation. I'm curious what your consulting surgeon will recommend, I have never seen one exactly like that. Good luck. And with your double-cryptorchid older dog as well; I hope those testicles are easy to hunt down.
Some interesting things to report here.
First, I had arthroscopic shoulder surgery last Friday. Today is the one-week anniversary, and the first day I am officially allowed to not wear a sling (I have been getting lax with it for the last 2 days). I start physical therapy next week. Again. I'm really really sick of not being able to do weight lifting the way I want to, for months now, because of the pain, and now I can't because the shoulder is freshly operated. I had a prior surgery on this same shoulder in early 2013, so I'm pretty pissed that the fix lasted all of 3 years.
Second, on a happier note, we have adopted a cat. We got her through a cat rescue group that "features" their saved animals in a local independent pet store. We happened to take a friend to it last Sunday because she had never been there, loves reptiles, and they have a huge reptile section. This adoption is A BIG DEAL because DH has steadfastly refused to adopt another animal since our misadventure with the dog we adopted a few years ago. It took the concerted begging of all members of the family over a many month span to slowly break down his resolve sufficiently that when we saw this cat, who seemed tempermentally perfect, he was grudgingly willing to take a chance on her. So, welcome to Cassie, a 1-year-old brown-and-black tabby with a delightfully sweet and friendly disposition.
JayZeeJay, thanks for the thoughts about my new dog's leg. I'll let you know what the surgeon says. I was hoping they could just remove the part of the bone forming the "extra" joint, but I guess that may be complicated.
Andrea, good luck with your shoulder rehab. I'm glad you got a new cat to keep you busy. Just try to focus on exercises you can do, and maybe do some that you don't do very often. Any more, I always seem to be afflicted with some small irritation or minor injury that keeps me from working some part of my body or other. Very annoying.
