Default Maintainers Chat - Week of January 8 - 15

Good morning! It's pouring rain here and we're waiting for our first snow of the season. It's dark and cold and wet but I'm heading out to the gym and grocery store in a few minutes - I do so much better if I exercise first thing and get it done!

How are you feeling today, Anne? Are the antibiotics kicking in? I rememeber those molars coming in like little sledgehammers. Not fun for you or DD!

And Lily, I think you're 100% right to go see a gastroenterologist. What you're experiencing sounds horrible and sure isn't normal.

to all - I'll be back in a bit but have a date with the elliptical first.

Morning, Meg. Morning everyone.

I'm feeling better, but something with some kind of medication (and some off plan eating) has me bloated up almost 10 lbs. Frustrating. DD's teeth still not here!

But I'm going back to work today. Have fun with your elliptical.

Anne-glad you're better, here's hoping the molars get through soon
Lily-I hope they find some answers and you can feel better soon. It sounds
miserable.
Meg-It's finally feeling like January here too. I guess I knew it would get
cold at some point, but I was enjoying the strange weather.

I've still got a stinky head cold and it's working it's way through the family, 12yods, 5yods, and 3yodd have succumbed so it was a very quiet weekend here.

Thanks everyone, I am feeling better this morning. All the junk I took finally worked around 1AM and my stomach and back isn't hurting now. Thank God for this. Scale was back down 5 lbs. this morning to 142 which was a relief. I knew I had been eating right and didn't think I could have gained fat. I'm still going to try to get appt. with gastroenterologist as I know that this will keep happening. I want to get to the bottom of this not just try to relieve it with mega doses of laxatives. This really does have me afraid to eat.

Anne, sorry to hear about your sickness and the increase in lbs. I know how upsetting that can be after my weigh in yesterday. It will probably come right back off like mine did, but I know it's frustrating anyway.

Joy, thanks. Sorrry to hear that your family is sick too. Mine is all just getting over the head stuff too.

Lily: so glad to hear that your laxatives/fiber kicked in and you're feeling better. That must be a huge relief. I'm sure it feels good to have the scale back to normal, too! I'm glad to hear that you are going to see a specialist. I'm up about a pound after a weekend of eating out and eating more than I usually do, but I'll be back on my program today. My 15yo daughter wanted to out for breakfast to Villiage Inn just the two of us this morning. I had eggs, bacon, hash browns and an English muffin. Definitely way more than my usual bran cereal! I didn't go to the gym so we could go out to eat. She promised she would go with me later. Now she's napping on the sofa so who knows if that will materialize. It's her last day of winter break before school resumes.
Meg: Have fun at the gym! At least you're not snowed in like we have been off and on here in Denver over the last few weeks! I just heard that we are expecting another big snowstorm this Thursday or Friday. Ugh! I'd love a bit of warm weather to melt all the piles of snow that are lining our streets.

Lily, glad to hear your stomach finally calmed down. I really hope you can get in to see a gastroenterologist or a colorectal person because aside from the constipation, bloody stool is never normal and can be a sign of all sorts of problems!

Anne, glad you are feeling better! It's funny that your DD has four molars coming in, and I am going to get all four wisdom teeth out on Friday!

My fiance and I have been eating clean so far this year. The only treat I've had was a small ice cream sandwich. I'm trying to figure out the best eating plan for the two of us -- before I mostly made what I thought was good for me, and he would just eat a larger portion of it plus some extra bread or fruit or something to make up the difference. But now he is trying to lose some weight and not eating as much, and I'm concerned that my cooking doesn't have enough protein for him. In fact, I know next to nothing about men's dietary needs! He seems to think it will help him lose weight if we eat vegetarian more often (we usually eat vegetarian about 1/3-1/2 of our meals) but I'm worried about the protein. OTOH his "bad" cholesterol was borderline so he wants to cut down on animal products because of the cholesterol thing. Do any of you ladies have any advice for me? I'm the chef in our household!

Speaking of eating well we had a great meal last Friday night. Baked salmon with some seasoning, rice pilaf with vermicelli and red beans, and a nice salad with walnuts and dried cranberries. Yum! That was probably the most well-balanced meal I've ever made.

Paperclippy, My DH likes to eat healthfully and not gain (occasionally lose a little). I do the cooking for the family, and I feed him whatever I'm having plus more of the protein and more of the grain. For example, I might make a chicken dish, roasted veggies and brown rice. I might not eat the rice and he might have double portion of the chicken, everything else would be the same. The biggest thing that changed and helped him was MORE FIBER. More veggies, more whole grains, more high-fiber options. It fills him up and is, of course, so good for the digestion (insoluble fiber) and the heart/arteries (soluble fiber).

Hope this helps!

Glad you're feeling better Lily, and that you're going to see a specialist.

MHMama - Even with all our snow over the past couple weeks, I keep saying "I'm glad I don't live in Denver." Hope you're clearing out. The big advantage you have is that it will be warmer there much sooner than here.

Paperclippy - I am also the chef. My DH pretty muchs eats what I eat, but he usually has dessert, which I almost never do. He eats 1.5-2 quarts of yogurt (usually full fat) a week. He used to have a bad ice cream habit, but I stopped buying it (at his request) and at least the yogurt is a little healthier. He's not overweight at all btw - weighs 140-145 consistently (he's only 5'3" (down from 5'9") owing to multiple spinal compression fractures). As he's not lifting, I don't worry giving him more protein than I'm eating. I'm more concerned that he gets enough fruits and veggies, esp as he's apt to eat cereal or nothing much if he's home by himself.

Hi ladies, I am feeling well today. I did have some cauliflower last night and it really had my tummy turned upside down. I don't know if this is good or not. But, I've decided to chew 4 fiber choice tabs per day instead of the 2 that I normally chewed and not take any laxatives that my Dr. had prescribed. I have an appt. with a gastroenterologist in April. (the earliest I could get in). I'm going to see if the added fiber will help. I have cut cheese from my diet. I know that on days I have Oats for breakfast that I have less problems with constipatiion. But, since they are higher in carbs, I only eat them twice a week. If this problem recurs I am going to see my OB/GYN doctor that I am friends with and see if she can get me an appt. with a gastro dr. quicker on more of an emergency basis. I think she would do this for me.

paperclippy, my DH eats the same foods that I do. But, he usually goes back for seconds on the salad and meat. He isn't trying to lose weight and has always been a healthy weight. I pack his lunch each day for work and make sure to include pleny fresh fruits in it. Otherwise, he says he'd be more tempted to eat junk from the vending machines.

I weighed again this morning and was up a lb. from yesterday . (I expected this after my intestines being completely emptied the night before). I weighed 143 today which is what I am normally staying at. I was able to eat a decent dinner last night of baked chicken, cauliflower and green beans. I think I'm going to weigh each morning for a while instead of my usual weekly weigh in and see how it goes. Now, that I'm not miserable, I plan to get back to my exercise routine.

Hi, my name is Susan, I recently dropped about 40 pounds and am realizing that I will need some support keeping it off and staving off those bad, bad habits. I would love to join you all in the maintainers forum! I joined this site a few years ago and NEVER thought I would actually get to say that!

Its sort of awkward however because I didn't lose the weight due to any ambition or hard work. I got rather sick a couple months ago and the weight flew off, but the upside is that the mystery illness actually got me in a far more healthy eating pattern. So here is to keeping that up and being healthy enough to start jogging again!

Lily~what you're describing sounds a lot like what my MIL had gone through in the past. She has several foods now that she simply cannot eat because they cause such pain and distress. Among those are broccoli, cauliflower and avocado. She always ate them before, but suddenly her system wouldn't allow her to eat them. She discussed it with her doctor and he said that some people will develop a problem such as this in their lifetime and if you figure out what the foods are that cause the distress, then you should avoid them. It's really hard for her because she loves avocado (she's not as sad about the broccoli and cauliflower, LOL!).

allinell, you might be right. I have eaten brocolli, cauliflower and avocados all in the last several days. I have chopped them up in my salad. I thought the extra fiber would help.

Hello Maintainers + Happy New Year!!!

I have been lurking here and there for a few weeks.
I brought 4lbs with me this holiday season.
Was doing so well for the most of it and then POW!!! I just went nuts on the chow.
Just in the process of cleaning up my act - new resolve to get down to 135......

Hi everyone,

I thought my tummy problems were temporarily solved but now I'm not so sure. I got on treadmill and walked 30 min's last night. At 1AM I woke up vomiting. Not sure why, could have been stress. I feel OK this morning after finally going back to sleep at 6 AM.Once again, I'm hungry but afraid to eat. Does anyone know of any food that would be very gentle on my tummy? I'm thinking of just some broth and SF jello. For some strange reason, my hands keep itching. My medicine isn't changed except the lower dose of prednisone. This might could be the reason. I really wish I could just feel good for a couple of days.

sznn, good to see you posting. I have also been trying to get back on track and take the holiday lbs. off. My eating has been minimal lately but my exercise is definitely lacking. Man, when I skip a day of exercise, it's so easy for it to turn into a week.
