Default Alcohol Is Not Your Weight-Loss Buddy

Alcohol Is Not Your Weight-Loss Buddy (got this from a Jillian Michael newsletter...I need to read this every Friday and Saturday morning!!)

Whether it's cocktails on ladies' night out, a beer at the pub, or a glass of wine with a delicious gourmet meal, most of us enjoy a drink (or three!) every now and again. But remember what I've been teaching you: In addition to being aware of the foods that are good for you, it's important to know which ones are truly bad for you. And let's face it — alcohol is in the latter camp.
Alcohol can sabotage your weight-loss efforts. It's a simple carbohydrate and your body treats it as sugar when breaking it down. Alcohol also causes an increase in blood sugar and fat storage, and because it doesn't contain any fiber, it will also cause a sugar crash as well as an increased appetite for carbs.
If you choose to have a drink, avoid sugary cocktails, beer, and wine. Stick to clear alcohols like vodka and rum with calorie-free mixers like diet or club soda, light fruit juices, and diet Snapple. And you can always drink it straight (or on the rocks).
It's also a good idea to eat something around the time you're going to be drinking. Try to have a meal that's high in protein, which will help curb the release of carbs from the alcohol and create more balance in your blood sugar levels. The meal will also serve to fill you up so you'll be less likely to make unhealthy food decisions or succumb to cravings when you're hungry and tipsy later.

Very interesting. I'm going to have to goodle the Jillian newsletter. I keep thinking I'm being "good" when I choose wine lately instead of my favorite gin and tonic....I have just been trying to avoid drinking all together since I've started but it hasn't been easy...

Good article Joni! I'd also heard from that doctor on Oprah that if you choose to drink, choose a clear alcohol. The darker the colour, the harder it is on your system to process.

White wine? ;-)

Hmmm....I had fleetingly thought of depleting DF's beer stash in order to use up those darn starches that have been loaded on me with the new Feel Full Plan...guess I will rethink that one

Seriously though, good to know!!

Plus, Mama Nicole, you don't even drink!! No wonder you were not entertained...

A while back someone had some good drink suggestions ... I do like vodka, but don't want to waste my fruits on orange or grapefruit juices.....I'll have to experiment with some of the Crystal lites...diet tonic is pretty good too...and lots of lemon..............

JM - I drink that all the time. But I use Diet Pepsi and call it a "Sneaky Pep". Also, try Stoli vanilla w/diet coke. It's a vanilla diet coke, or even cream soda-ish. But you can really only drink one or two 'cause they're sweet.

And I love my Crystal Light w/vodka!

Ironically when I was losing, I was pretty much guarenteed a loss after I drank. Go figure.

Granted, now it's the opposite, well maybe that's because I'm not as diligient at keeping it at only one drink. I can't help it if they bring me 2 cosmos for the price of one. At least I can count the cranberry juice as a fruit.

You will be Joni.

Though using all the daily starches on them causes a massive hangover.

awww crap.. more bad news!! I found some great new diet sodas at the store, Diet Pomegranate, Citrus Fizz like Fresca etc and I think those mixed with a clear liquid would be good. All the GI based diets say to have wine but definitely not beer..
Ahh whatever I do it will be a 4lb gain no matter how many I have

There's always the strawberry-kiwi lite mix with tequilla.

Now that makes a good margarita.

I don't know what happened to my post but it didn't go through... Anyhoo, silver tequila with lemon lime crystal light and some fresh lime squeezed in makes a GREAT margarita!
