As for what works for me, I am doing a modified version of Tim Ferriss' Slow Carb Diet. It's a low carb diet. It worked well for me the first time I did it (wish I hadn't gotten away from it), and it's working well for me again now. Some people do better with calorie counting. It's very popular. Weight Watchers works for some people, Ideal protein for others, Atkins for others, etc. There are sub-forums and threads that address all of them under the Diet Central forum. There is also an exercise forum and more. So like I said, take a look around, and start posting! I wish you the best!
