I purchased the Thousand Island dressing and didn't like it either. But, I have used it in the Big Mac in a Bowl recipe (you can google it or look for it in the recipe thread. It's very popular) and I have combined the Thousand Island dressing with Franks hot sauce to make a dip when I'm having raw veggies and I have surprisingly liked it. Also, like some others have said, I have found that now I am quite happy with oil & vinegar on my plain salads.

Hi Briael
I loved your responses so much, you sound just like me, I almost threw up with the waters and couldn't get the water in .. I'm on day 4 and it's much better. I started out with non stop loose stools and Now I'm so constipated I have rectal bleeding (sorry i know too much info) but need help. my coach said to eat my 2 cups of veggies per meal and water, but was i was and still constipated?
I detest lettuce too.. so boring, I love how your hubby tests you with the candy, ty for answering ALL my Q's you have no idea what it means to me. you do walk a lot and fast too - I'm injured and can't do that .. i want to run and swim , my body wants to but I can't ... and on previous diets i Never lost weight without exercise.. never ever. sooo glad your DH (don't know what that means) improved with apnea.. i don't wear my masks bc I can't ... i just can't wear them, so I'm untreated and getting worse.
on the scale so far I don't see changes at all.. i mean early Am it looks like I'm down a couple pounds but than as the day goes on and I weigh myself I'm up again. sooo scared.. this is my very last chance, and i don't have much time, i promised my dad - he's fighting pancreatic cancer right now.
please lmk if you experienced cons tip and rectal issues and how you resolved it. I already drank the water and eat the veggies. thanks soooo much..

The first week on IP I was really struggling to get the water allowance. I absolutely detest lettuce so I forced myself to eat it (now I don't). I had headaches and always felt slightly dizzy and lightheaded.
It passed after the first week though, and I began to be completely disinterested in carbs in general and candy in particular. My husband deliberately kept a packet on a shelf to test my resolve, but I am not in the least tempted.
Now, just into my 7th week, I feel amazing. Strong and like my body is working the way it should always have worked. I have no cravings, hunger is just a minor sensation that I can ignore and it will go away.
Give yourself credit for committing to doing the diet. Trust yourself to be honest - if you feel your resolve wavering make sure you begin a tracking log (many websites have this or you can draw up your own sheet). You may find that having to log everything that passes your lips keeps you honest while you are getting into the swing of ketosis.
Go easy on the exercise. You may feel great, but the weakness will hit you when you least expect it if you are expending too much energy.
The whole point of the IP protocol is to put your body into ketosis. This is a perfectly natural ancient form of fuel use for the body, but if you burn through the ketones and your muscles have no fuel supply, your liver will start burning muscle to produce a fast supply of glycogen (through a process called gluconeogensis). This diet is a delicate balance. If you put yourself out of ketosis, you have to begin again at Day 1 to get back into it, and really, who wants that?
I walk. I am a naturally fast walker but I am schooling myself to walk at more of a ramble pace than a striding one. I do it on an empty stomach and decide what is for breakfast on my return, based on the results my garmin gives me. Long walk at a faster pace than ideal and I'll have a chocolate drink (7 carbs), shorter walk at around 20-21 mins per mile and I will have one of the fruit one - banana & pineapple or peach & mango at 3 carbs. If I go absolutely nuts and put in over 4 miles then I'll actually break into one of the muscle milk packets to give the max protein return. Try to moderate your exertion level in anything you do. This diet is all about losing fat and saving muscle, hence the protein levels. Remember that muscle burns more calories, so you want to preserve every inch of muscle you have!
Nice loss, congrats on a good first week. 3FC has some seriously excellent motivators with experience in everything. Never seen a question asked that someone hasn't been able to answer.
Congrats, 6lbs is no small amount to lose! Another great start that will help keep you focused.
I have read, from some of the veteran IPers who are in maintenance, that your tastes change while you are on IP. At first I wasn't sure how much truth was in it, but now I do believe it. In week 1 I detested soy, could taste it in every single packet and resented it. Now I find the shakes very sweet, have no cravings for sweet food at all and can only taste soy in a couple of the packets (mainly the chicken a la king and the chicken minestrone type soup - the ones with "bits"). What I really miss is my cracked wheat toast, and I think that's more about texture than taste, to be honest.
The bloating and loose stools/diarrhea is because of the instant change from sugar-based carbs to soy. Are you taking the enzymes and some probiotics? These will help your body adjust to a new type of food that it is not familiar with. I had the exact same thing and it stopped within 4 days of starting enzymes and probiotics. You don't even need to have the IP versions, there are many excellent varieties out there. Anything that helps your body break down high quantities of protein will help.
Sleep apnea is greatly improved by the IP diet and weight loss. DH has lost nearly 40lbs and his elephant roar of a snore is now more like a kitten snuffle. He claims that his sleep quality is much better too.
Many of the Walden Farm dressings are disgusting. You may prefer to make an extra virgin olive oil, apple cider vinegar and garlic pepper dressing for salads. You'll be amazed at how far a tsp of oil, five drops of vinegar and a shake of spice will get a salad!
Welcome. Glad you're finding it easy to follow IP and sorry to hear you're feeling unwell. It's very important to make sure that you get all your foods in, but it seems like you know this already. If you still feel unwell tomorrow you could try some not-quite-hardboiled eggs just to nibble on and forego that big 8oz protein at one sitting (that seems to defeat so many of us).
Hope you're feeling better soon.

Ruth Ann and Scorbett
Ruth Ann
you were right ... i got much better on day four with the lightheadedness.. and i am getting use to the food... i now don't have issues with diarrhea and bloating anymore, but i have issues with severe constipation and bleeding
i do eat veggies and drink all the water but still have issues...
I have tried hard to find recopies and can't find the links anywhere,... i'm not that good at navigating the site.
you were right- when I want to cheat I come on here and it really helps.
when you make the banana pudding and chock in a loaf.. how do you portion it out ? how much would it count as? that sounds like I would love it.
Please lmk how you do it.. thanks sooo much
One Last Q's and you don't have to answer... did you lose all your weight with IP or have surgery as well for weight loss.. bc you mentioned some surgeries. Please LMK I was considering it.
QUOTE=Ruth Ann;5080032] Lilly - you got some excellent advice from Briael & shasta up there!
Give yourself a chance to get used to the foods - it's a big change from the fat/sugar laden food most of us ate prior to IP. And seriously, the food you hate now you may like more later after your tastes adjust. Also look at the recipe threads (links in the first post of the daily thread) for ideas on spicing up the packets. For instance, I hated the lemon pudding plain but if I put a few drops of lemon juice in the water before mixing it really tasted much better. I disliked the banana pudding on it's own, but mixing it with a chocolate pudding and baking it into a loaf was really yummy!
I didn't like most of the WF stuff - I only ever used the pancake syrup and TI dressing for Big Mac in a Bowl. I didn't mind the taste of the bbq sauce, but my tummy didn't like it. Like others, it was easier to just make my own salad dressing.
On the sleep apena, that's something you really should ask your doctor. I do know that my boss had severe sleep apnea when he started and losing the weight made a big improvement in that area. He had to have his machine recalibrated every 50 pounds or so (he lost around 160 pounds).[/QUOTE]

Welcome! Headaches are common in the first week of P1, lick some salt off your hand or put some in a bottle of water and chug it down...it's kinda gross but it works!
On your P1 sheet there is a list of "unlimited raw" veggies - so in terms of salads, if you use nothing but what's on THAT list, you can have them as often as you want. If you use anything on the "select veggies" list, you need to count those veggies toward your 4 cups per day.
Many people use the Walden Farms brand salad dressings -they are 0 carb, 0 sugar, 0 fat dressings that can be found online or in the produce section of your supermarket. There are trace carbs in these types of 0 carb 0 fat 0 sugar products, so you should limit yourself to about 6 servings of any "extra" like that per day. You can also make your own vinaigrette using your 2 tsp of olive oil, some apple cider or white vinegar, and any spices you like!

You can definitely use Stevia! Just keep track of it as an "extra" so you don't go too overboard

Hi Lilly
Thanks for the vote of confidence .. I'm just into week 7, so I love getting advice from all the people further down the IP (and Alternatives) journey than I am! There are so many lovely people here who take the time to answer your questions ... I think it just depends who sees your post first.
You asked so many questions that I'm going to break them down and answer them one at a time, hopefully that will give you a chance to consider them as individual issues and tackle them separately. Of course they all tie in, but there are things you can do to help each different problem.

I keep a bottle of Walgreen's cherry flavoured Magnesium Citrate (I think it's around a dollar a bottle and they sometimes call it Citrate of Magnesia) in my fridge. On days when I eat red meat or have less fiber-type veggies I will take a quick "chug" (probably about 2 tbsp) just to make sure that things keep moving. I know that the IP coaches often recommend (and probably sell) Novi-Lax, but there are alternatives you can take - Senokot-S, Dulcolax and the Citrate of Magnesia that are over the counter alternatives.
I do find that since I've been taking probiotics Ultimate Flora Probiotics and digestive enzymes my toilet habits have been a lot more consistent. I have ALWAYS suffered from constipation and hemorrhoids, but these are becoming a thing of the past!

Try 1 tsp of olive oil, 5 drops of apple cider vinegar (I go slightly off plan and use Heinz red wine vinegar) with a quick shake of garlic pepper or lemon pepper. You could even squeeze a lemon or lime into it to make it zesty. It makes lettuce bearable!

The whole point of the IP protocol is that you don't have to exercise. Any you can do is a bonus, provided you don't overdo it. As you start feeling better and the ketosis kicks in you may find that housework is easier and you aren't discomforted by moving around and it will spur you to to a little more. Take it easy because you will run out of energy quickly in the early days.

DH = Dear Husband. I'm not huge on acronyms (had too many of them in my professional life) so I prefer to just say hubby, but some people like the continuity on the forums.
Keep looking at the new masks that come out, as it seems that they are getting smaller and less intrusive all the time. I know how you feel, I couldn't stand anything on my face either, I would feel suffocated and begin to panic. If you have the funds you could always approach a sleep expert about having something custom made that is small. Have you tried the nasal passage openers that are available on the market?

This is 100% normal. You're a woman. Your body has hormones flooding through it ALL the time. You will see huge variances at different times of the day. Even drinking 8oz of water will gain you half a pound in weight until your body absorbs it and uses it. My normal variance is down somewhere between a quarter of a lb and a whole pound in the morning (I call this my non-hydrated weight as it's been 7-8 hours since I put anything fluid in) and 3 lbs up in the evening. Don't worry about the changes you see during the day. Even the tape measure will vary at different hours of the day. Focus on the weekly weigh in (WI) value on the scale that you are recording. If you make a point of weighing at the same time of day, in the same clothes (or naked) every week then you will see where your progress is. Worrying about daily variations will drive you insane and you will focus on what's not working and being hungry and feeling resentful that you aren't seeing results.
I know how you feel about getting healthy after watching a parent's health fail. My whole reason for losing weight last time (I managed to go from 252 to 195) was because my father had just died from congestive heart failure and I started to see HIS eating patterns and lack of exercise in my own life. It's good for motivation, but remember that this diet is about YOU. You are doing this to give yourself the best possible chance. You are never out of time until the end of your own life. Look many how many seniors are on this board and see how they are working IP into their daily routines. Don't give up, and don't fear time.

Do you come in through 3FC's main page or do you come straight to the menu for Ideal Protein? 3FC Ideal Protein board menu. If you set this up as a favorite or bookmark then you can come straight in to the area that you are interested in. At the very top there are "sticky" links (ie fixed at the top of the board menu) to the recipes, official documents, guides etc. If not, you can use the search facility. See the purple bar across the top of the forums? Click on the Search option, type in the name of the packet you want to use and it will take you to all the threads that contain that packet's name. You can also use Google for the same thing. Pinterest is where I get many packet recipes.

If you use a chocolate pudding AND a banana pudding packet that is 2 packets. So, half of the loaf per meal.
If you like the sweetness and flavour varieties of IP compliant syrups you might want to look at the Torani sugar free carb free syrups. I add these in addition to olive oil in most things as it keeps baked packets more moist and it significantly improves the taste of packets that are less-than-ideal tasting. I add the Irish Cream to the Vanilla pudding for a richer flavour.
Hope these answers help. Try and tackle everything one problem at a time. As you get rid of one another will seem less of a big deal.

3. Apnea -- How can I start a New thread??? I wanted to know if anyone on this site has sleep apnea.. I have untreated apnea bc i can't wear the mask. I couldn't sleep last night and wasn't sure if this diet is safe with apnea? My apnea Dr says without treated apnea you can never lose weight.
I really don't want to give this up, I have to do it for my dad (he's ill and said his only wish is i get healthy and lose weight before anything god forbid happens, and my little boy too).. I hope I'm not allergic to these products, and I Hope I can do this with my apnea.
Please let me know thank you sooo much.

Hi Lilly and WELCOME!
I have sleep apnea (diagnosed about 10 years ago). I could NOT wear the masks I tried at the sleep study. I have used the NasalAire prongs since day 1 with NO problems. They are two soft plastic tubes that sit inside your nose and give you NO sense of having your face covered! Just a small tube running up each side of your head. Very open and easy to get used to!!
http://www.cpap.com/productpage/inno...-size-kit.html
Having apnea can cause weight gain because lack of proper sleep causes weight gain. However, more importantly, apnea can be dangerous and even life-threatening! Anything that causes you to stop breathing is not something to take chances on. I encourage you to look at either the nasal prongs I posted OR nasal pillows such as
http://www.cpap.com/cpap-masks/nasal...-cpap-mask.php
If you do decide to try the NasalAire 2 prongs, let me know. I have a whole bunch of unused ones because they send ALL five sizes in the kit. So possibly you could use a size I do not. Never know. I could send you a set to try.
I know you don't have enough posts yet to PM me, so here is my email. I will remove it after I hear from you

Amanda you are amazing !!! you answered all my questions in such detail... you have NO idea how much I appreciate you taking the time to explain all this info to me... you made me so happy )) I'm going to go through and write notes now until I get to a printer to print. I bought the mag cit .. I already took two colace and if I'm still not ok by tomorrow.. I'm going to try the Mag citrate. the Lettuce dressing you suggested sounds like I would love it.
I'm going to look for the probiotics you suggested, and I'm going to see if I can get on this site the way you explained. I always have to use the search bar -than keep looking to get here ...
By running out of time I meant.. it's pancreatic cancer and time is limited... he told me before he was diagnosed that he was heartbroken that I let myself go.. bc he knows what a strong, independent girl I was and always have been. I didn't just let my weight go, I let a lot of stuff go .. bc I developed problems in my personal life. He said he felt like he would'nt live long and just had one wish that i get healthy and he seems me healthy and back to my old self, physically and emotionally. A year later (last oct )he was diagnosed. So that's what i meant by running out of time. At times I feel responsible for his cancer , bc he worried too much about me, my husb and my son. I'm sooo sorry for your loss.. and how brave and strong of you to make the connection to his lifestyle choices and make the change. I'm sure he's watching over you and so very proud of you.
Thanks again a million for all your help.

As you get rid of one another will seem less of a big deal.

thank you
Laurie thank you so much for your post. I have never heard of the nasal prongs. yes I totally think the lack of oxygen with my severe apnea prevents me from loosing weight. I feel so claustrophobic with the mask, i stop breathing in the middle of the night, and rip it off in my sleep. and I can't move with all the tubes.. and I move a lot at night. I will email you, thank u sooo much. Lilly

One Last Q's and you don't have to answer... did you lose all your weight with IP or have surgery as well for weight loss.. bc you mentioned some surgeries. Please LMK I was considering it.

Lilly, you've gotten some great advice! I love how people here are so willing to share their knowledge!
A couple of things, make sure you are getting all your supplements in. I found missing my magnesium led to problems. I've also used Smooth Move Tea if it wasn't super bad and that usually got things going if you need another alternative.
You can find a bunch of recipes here http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/idea...t-threads.html. If you ever lose the link follow the directions Jlus gave you or look at the first post of the Daily Chat.
On the weight loss surgery - no, I didn't have it, lost all my weight with diet. I have had three surgeries since starting IP (a hernia, a repair after the hernia and recently breast reduction). Several people here started IP to get ready for weight loss surgery or as a last ditch effort prior to surgery and have stayed with IP to lose their weight instead.
Sounds like you are determined to do this and you can! You will do super!
