Default Birthday Cake Substitute?

DH's birthday. No cake, no sweets, no muffins planned. Just grilling veggies and hamburgers. Any fun ideas for what to sink the birthday candles into?

I used to have a candle that looked like a birthday cake.

I'd use one of those long seedless "English" cucumbers!! Cut flat on one side of the cuke...use a kitchen skewer to make small holes that can be expanded when you put the candles in! (Make sure to use LOTS of bright colors...maybe sparklers on each end too!!!)

Set the candle boat on a platter with lots of skewers of chunked-up bell peppers in every hue.... mushrooms and all the other veggies you plan to grill ... or use a platter of raw veggies for munching on a bed of lettuce...Voila...your salad....!!

Are you purposely avoiding sweet tasting items?

If not, you could always make IP-friendly cookies out of the chocolate drink mix!

What about an IP friendly cake in a mug?

Take a chocolate drink pak, mix with enough water to make a slightly runny pudding consistency, add a teaspoon of olive oil, tsp of baking powder, dash of vanilla extract, one egg white, sweetener if you want....I don't use it. Put in microwave for 2-3 minutes....I find it works better in a bowl than cup as it gets quite bubbly. I might put a little WF maple syrup on it.

I think she was just looking for somewhere to put candles...not a way to make a cake.

It might be too late, but I would sink it straight into the hamburger and "frost"/decorate with your burger toppings. Happy bday to the hubs!

I appreciate all the ideas! Hubby didn't want a cake this year but I just felt like we *needed* the candle, singing and blowing out tradition.

I was trying to stay away from anything sweet and I was thinking about doing the cucumber and veggie idea... but then he said he really didn't want the candle and he was really happy just sleeping in really late and then catching up on some reruns and then out to a late Thai dinner (veggies in garlic sauce--delicious!).

We both did great and we survived a bday without candles!

Well Happy B-day to him and hope you both enjoyed the day. We are in favor of low-key relaxing weekends around here and will take any excuse to make a quiet weekend!
